Christians Among Those Suffering from Earthquake

Two catastrophic earthquakes and nearly eighty aftershocks have struck southern Turkey and northwest Syria. Tens of thousands have lost their life, and even more are suffering. Due to winter storms and freezing temperatures many survivors could yet lose their lives due to no shelter, water, fuel, or electricity. Christians living in the region, many of them refugees from neighboring Iran, are suffering. While the death toll is far higher in Turkey, communities in Syria are at even greater risk following the disaster due to the ongoing civil war. A local source in Aleppo, Syria reported: “We’re talking about more than 20,000 Christians now in the streets. I’m now in the street also. No one is at home; no shops, no food. People are really suffering.”

USPS Requiring Sunday Work

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has begun forcing postal workers to work on Sunday. The USPS even refused to give a postal worker an accommodation to continue going to church on Sunday (which he had always done). A federal court ruled that he has NO RIGHT to go to church. The case is being brought to the Supreme Court. This case will not only affect our right to go to church but also every religious accommodation and expression in the workplace for years to come.

Christians Released from Prison in Iran

A pastor sentenced to death in Iran for apostasy, was the third Christian convert recently released from prison as part of the government’s annual amnesty marking the anniversary of the 1979 revolution. While welcoming the releases, it was noted that those released had already served significant portions of their sham sentences. These pardons are just part of a larger game of musical chairs the Iranian state plays with prisoners of conscience, including religious conscience, arresting and releasing people at will.

Christians Under Siege in Artsakh

Artsakh [a self-declared republic that many consider really part of the Republic of Azerbaijan] has been under siege for about seventy-five days, under the guise of an environmental action. Azerbaijan has closed the only road connecting Artsakh to neighboring Armenia and the rest of the world—the Lachin Corridor—and because of that physical barricade 120,000 Christians in Artsakh have been trapped. Cut off from food, medicine, and fuel, the population faces malnutrition and frostbite. The Armenian Church issued an appeal calling attention to the genocidal risk threatening Armenians in Artsakh.

NJ Majority Support Abortion, but also Restrictions

A poll by a NJ university showed than six in ten New Jerseyans describe themselves as pro-choice on the issue of abortion. This increased over the past decade. A majority say it would be a good idea to place protections in the state constitution. While pro-choice views among state Republicans have actually declined over the past decade, it is slightly higher than it is for Republicans nationally. While mostly discouraging news, the poll also showed that only 36% of New Jerseyans say abortion should always be legal, but 39% say it should have some limitations.

Walgreens Boycotted for Following Abortion Laws

Online calls to boycott Walgreens grew in early March after the second-largest drugstore in America said it will not distribute abortion pills in some states where abortion is limited but not completely banned. This comes after twenty attorneys general sent a letter to Walgreens threatening it with legal action if it distributed the drug in their states. Walgreens stated it is still working to become FDA-certified to sell abortion pills but only in jurisdictions where it is legal and operationally feasible (because of various states’ abortion limitations). Hundreds online are saying they will “no longer be spending any money at Walgreens” or will “never step foot in a Walgreens again.”
