The Song of a New Heart (4)
“Sing unto the LORD; for He hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth” (Isaiah 12:5).
Sing unto the LORD; for He hath done excellent things.” The prophet in song wants to praise and thank the Lord. There is much praising in the world. Some praise the gold and silver of the world. To them I want to say, think of the end of your life. Then all the gold and silver of this world sinks away, and if we do not have a Saviour for our soul, all will be lost. “
When the new heart may be full of tender desires for the Lord, this heart wants to sing praise to the Father. This heart has had a glimpse of an eternal beginning when a holy Father had thoughts of peace for deeply fallen sinners. Now this heart sings, “Why me Lord, when so many are passed by?” Now this heart may see, despite often missing and seeking, that it always had a beginning with the holy Father, and it wants to lift up that which it often dares not give a name and bring it by the Lord.
When this new heart may have a glimpse of a precious Saviour fulfilling the mandate given by the Father, then it wants to sing unto the Lord, for He hath done excellent things. What are they? The only begotten Son of the Most High has come to stand in the breach between me and a holy God. That Son so loved the Father and the Father’s chosen children that He gave His life and blood to heal the breach. When the Lord gives an eye of faith, and when this eye may rest upon the Saviour and see the breach healed, then this new heart wants to sing the praises of its Lord and Saviour. It wants to come and rest behind the precious blood and righteousness of Immanuel, God with us. In this heart lays a longing that it may have a place at the cross to hear and see how that the price for sin is paid. It longs to hear how a way is opened for a ruined sinner unto that which is lost.
Now this heart wants to hear a dying Saviour say, “I for you, else you would have to die forever.” By the grace of God, a poor sinner desires much tender holiness so that bowing in the deepest humility he may sing the praise of such a Saviour. For the remainder of his earthly journey, he wants to say, “All honor and glory for my Saviour.” Why? Because he may have a small glimpse of how he may soon be where he will never sin anymore. He longs for the place where he may sing a new song, where he may praise a Saviour who sought and saved him. He wants to sing with his heart that God so loved the world of his lost children that He gave His dear Son so that the way to heaven might be opened.
In that song he wants to sing praise unto the Holy Spirit for He hath done excellent things. His broken heart may truly know that all this was the work of the Holy Spirit who came to a rebel hastening on the way to a never-ending eternity. May his heart acknowledge the work of the Holy Spirit who came to awaken a sinner dead in sin and trespasses and to open his spiritual eyes to see the breach between a holy God and his soul. He came to give that sinner a place in that breach, to reveal in his heart that it would be just and right if that breach would swallow him up and he be forever lost. What an excellent moment when the dear Spirit opened his blind eyes and when, for the first time, the dear Spirit opened his eyes to glimpse a way opened and to see a ray of light. There the song begins, “O LORD, I will praise Thee: though Thou was angry with me, Thine anger is turned away.” What an excellent moment that is when for the first time the Holy Spirit comforts his heart with direction unto Christ, and when He speaks in that heart, “I am thy God.”
Isaiah says, “Make mention that His name is exalted. Sing unto the LORD; for He hath done excellent things.” Oh, that we could bemoan the fact that our heart is so empty of Him and so filled with the things of this world. Then the Song of a New Heart is not heard; it becomes dead and dry in a troubled heart. Many times, we dare not let our heart praise and honor the God who sought and saved us. Oh, that the Lord would enable such a troubled heart to begin to praise and honor Him for the wonder of His grace. That would be the beginning of what the children of God will do forever hereafter.
