Ascension

(Translated from the book Bij het geopende Woord [By the Open Word])

2 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

“…and sat on the right hand of God” (Mark 16:19b).

The third degree of Christ’s exaltation is the sitting at the right hand of God. It points to the habitation (Dutch: firmness—Ed.) of His throne. No power of hell is able to overthrow this throne. Christ is Zion’s eternal, triumphing King.

It is understandable that the disciples desired the manifestation of His kingdom upon earth. They were given to follow Him, and all expectation was directed to the perfection of His kingdom. Yet, after the petition, “Thy kingdom come,” comes another petition, namely, “Thy will be done.” The kingdom of God comes according to the eternal and perfect will of the Lord. The will of the disciples had to be bent toward this.

Christ would manifest Himself as King but so completely different from what was expected. A lesson of grace is needed for this. The disciples and all God’s children must learn to know themselves as kings who are dethroned and whose crowns have been taken from them. They cannot rule or keep themselves. The crown is fallen from the head, but who still experiences this?

Christ sits at the right hand of God; the disciples were still on earth. They dwelled in a world full of injustice, danger, strife, scorn, and misery. They were a poor flock of sheep for the slaughter. At the same time, Christ is in heaven as “King upon my holy hill of Zion.” He has “dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.” With His Godhead, majesty, grace, and Spirit, He is with His Church on earth. He is crowned with glory and honor. It is the reward for His work. Of Him, the Church may testify, “the LORD is our King.” To Him, who sits on the throne, be honor and glory.
