Meekness
“The meek shall eat and be satisfied” (Psalm 22:26a).
God’s children are called “meek.” In Galatians 5 Paul listed it as one of the fruits of the Spirit. In true conversion, God takes away the stony heart and gives a heart of flesh. A meek and quiet spirit is precious in God’s sight. It is a blessing when the Word of God is received in meekness, when a person bows before it as before the majesty of the eternal, living God. A meek person submits himself to the Lord. Such people deny themselves and become at one with God. They also become meek in relation to their neighbor. The meek suffer the wrong. They do not become bitter. Meekness bridles the mouth and keeps the tongue in check. Meekness practices the maxim “bear and forbear.” It is meekness that forgives when one is wrongly treated. A meek spirit is a forgiving spirit. We often forget favors received but remember when we are wrongly dealt with. It is meekness that returns good for evil, which is more than forgiving a wrong. Yielding to God and each other is a great blessing. By nature we cannot, but at the feet of the Lord Jesus and when united with Him it is practiced.
