Six Standards of Technology/Smart Phones
(Submitted by the Norwich Modern Media Committee)
Due to the globally widespread use and normalization of pornography, the dangers and addictive nature of social media, and the powerful influence of secular culture, we all feel the responsibility to protect students from the dangers of the Internet. One school board in our denomination expects these six standards to be followed by their families:
• No smartphone use under the age of sixteen.
• Parents are to have meaningful discussions with their children, making them aware of the dangers, responsibilities, and far-reaching consequences of media usage.
• Parents monitor and scroll through content and apps on household phones often.
• Parents are to install and monitor parental controls such as filtering and accountability software on all household computers and devices.
• Family cell phones should be kept in a central place after a certain time, i.e., 10 P.M. (smartphones should not be permitted in bedrooms).
• Students over the age of sixteen who have smartphones must still have their devices “locked down” by their parents to block access to Internet browsers, social networking apps, and personal hot spots.
