2020
From the Editor of The Banner of Truth
Dear Readers,
It is by the grace of God that we are enabled to come to the end of the year 2019 and begin a new year. It is a privilege to wish you God’s indispensable blessing for the time that lies before us. May the Lord keep and spare us for one another and, above all, bless His Word in our midst so that sinners will be called out of darkness and be added to those who are traveling to that eternal city. May the strength of the Lord be experienced upon that journey.
As we look about us, we see a world transgressing against God’s holy Word and ordinances. “Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto My words, nor to My law, but rejected it” (Jeremiah 6:19). When we look amongst us, a people who may yet come under the preaching of God’s Word, then there is great concern. World conformity is entering into our homes and lives at an alarming rate and, step by step, is also entering our churches. The complaint is heard that the Lord holds His hand so still. Is it not because broken hearts and contrite spirits are so missing among us?
Oh, that the Lord in the New Year may give true conversions amongst us—that there may be a growing in the life of grace and the knowledge of that only Saviour, Jesus Christ. May we learn the desire of David, “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2b). Perhaps, we may bring all of these thoughts together, dear reader, by saying, “Lord, in this new year wilt Thou yet grant a favor and preserve Thy Word among us.” May He bless also our young people with the knowledge of the truth and bind them to the aforesaid doctrine. The Lord grant that our children may grow on in the midst of our families and that the Lord will bless His Word unto their hearts.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish our editorial staff a blessed New Year. It is our hope and prayer that the Lord may grant them health and strength to perform the labors which they so willingly perform in formulating The Banner of Truth from month to month. It is our wish for them that the Lord may give them a taste of what they may handle.
Dear reader, we do not deserve anything; we have forfeited all. May the God of all grace lay a forfeited prayer in our hearts—Lord, prepare us ever more to meet Thee in righteousness—for when that is the case, regardless of how it will go in the New Year, all may be well.
