This Jesus
(Translated from the book Teerkost op de weg [Provision for the Way])
“Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).
The Lord Jesus took His disciples to the Mount of Olives, the place from which He would ascend to heaven. How blessed the disciples were to witness His ascension, especially because there was a promise attached to it, namely, that He would go to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house with its many mansions. Now He ascended into heaven, and they saw this until a cloud received Him out of their sight; they looked steadfastly to heaven in wonderment.
Behold, two angels stood by them with the message written in our text, “Ye men of Galilee.” They were first pointed to their origin as despised Galileans among men, yet not despised by God. On the contrary, they were richly endowed with personal grace and placed in an office. Then came the message, “this same Jesus.” Which Jesus was this? Well, this was their Jesus whom they had come to know, with whom they associated three years, who had taught, comforted, encouraged, and also admonished them. He was this Jesus who had died for them and had accomplished everything. He was this Jesus who appeared to them after His resurrection from the dead in various places and in various ways. He was this Jesus who had reconciled them to God, paid their debt, and borne their curse—this Jesus who had become so suitable, amiable, all-sufficient, and necessary to them, yes, who had become their all. Now, this Jesus will so come in like manner as they had seen Him go into heaven.
People of the Lord, what comfort lies in this. It is the same Jesus whom you have come to know through faith, no matter how little or how much. It is He who has gone to prepare a place for you, and He will one day take you unto Himself so that where He is there you may be also. How strong the longing can be when His people may once cast an eye over everything. However, how terrible it will be for the unconverted fellow traveler to fall into the hands of a living God, to be condemned by this Jesus to eternal death. People of God…This Jesus!
On whom but God can we rely,
The Lord our God Who reigns on high,
Who condescends to see and know
The things of heav’n and earth below?
—Psalter 306:3
