BIBLE QUIZ

10 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

It is time again for another Bible quiz. Hopefully you have been looking for it to arrive, so that you can again spend this time with your Bibles, searching for the answers. The Lord Jesus once told the people, “Search the Scriptures,” and He says the same to us. There is so much there to be learned, and if we leave the Bible lying upon the shelf, it has no meaning for us. Even in our searching, we need light from above to understand it in a right way.

What do we mean by the word “light”? Already on the first page of the Bible we read that God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Before that time there was only a darkness upon the face of the deep. This light of the first day was not dependent upon the sun, for the sun was not created until the fourth day. What a change this must have been from the darkness. Elsewhere in God’s Word we also read of darkness. Think only of the plague of darkness for three days which came upon the Egyptians. It was a darkness which could be felt.

However, the light which we need in our hearts is the light of the Spirit. He must give us an understanding heart that we might know the truth of God’s Word and what it is saying to us. With His light we shall believe the message of God’s Word. The Lord Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Thus we also are told the source of the light which we need.

The psalmist in Psalm 43 was praying for that light, and the words of his prayer are spelled out by the first letters of the answers to the quiz. As you will see, he also prayed for something more. We hope it may also be your prayer.

The people said unto Joshua, “The Lord our God will we serve, and His voice will we __?__.”

Jacob said, “I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which Thou hast shewed unto Thy __?__.”

The widow woman said to __?__, “Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.”

King __?__ said to Daniel,“Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets.”

The servant of Abraham said, “Blessed be the Lord God of my master, who hath not left __?__ my master of His mercy and His truth.”

In his first epistle John wrote, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive __?__, and the truth is not in us.”

The psalmist in Psalm 4 prayed, “Lord, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance __?__ us.”

The Lord Jesus said, “I am the way, the __?__, and the life.”

The woman of Canaan said to the Lord Jesus, “Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ __?__.”

In Matthew 23 the Lord Jesus said to the scribes and Pharisees, “Within ye are full of __?__ and iniquity.”

The serpent said unto the woman, “__?__, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

The psalmist in Psalm 119 said, “Thy word is a __?__ unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

The Lord Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Art thou a master of __?__, and knowest not these things?”

Isaiah (chapter 5) said, “Woe unto them that call evil __?__, and __?__ evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”

Paul said to Elymas the sorcerer, “Behold, the __?__ of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season.”

Pilate said unto Jesus, “What is __?__?”

In the plague of thick darkness in Egypt, we read, “__?__ the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”

The pillar of cloud between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel was a cloud of darkness to one, and gave light by __?__ to the Israelites.

As Saul journeyed and came near __?__, suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven.

In his first epistle John also wrote, “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in __?__; but in deed and in truth.”

In Psalm 145 we read, “The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon __?__, to all that call upon __?__ in truth.”

Bildad, in the 8th chapter of Job, said, “We are but of __?__, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow.”

The Lord Jesus said to the Samaritan woman, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in __?___”

Hezekiah on his sick bed prayed, “O Lord, __?__ now how I have walked before Thee in truth, and with a perfect heart.”

Philip said to the Ethiopian eunuch, “__?__ thou what thou readest?”

Before his death, Joshua said to the people, “Now __?__ fear the Lord, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth.”

Jethro said to Moses, “Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, __?__ covetousness.”

Again there are letters to be answered —

LA UREEN SLINGERLAND — What a nice long letter, Laureen. Yes, spring is a nice time of the year, but all four seasons have their special purpose. Perhaps we appreciate the spring more after the winter is behind us. Does your pet lamb have a name? We don’t have any pets at the present time. Say hello to your teacher for us.

JUSTUS VERHEIJ — We are quite well, Justus. We also read in the Bible about sicknesses, and they were found among rich and poor, old and young. Can you think of some examples? We know that they are some of the thorns and thistles of which the Lord spoke to Adam and Eve. We hope you are feeling well again.

BYRON KREFT — Yes, Byron, we did hear about your grandfather passing away, and we were sorry to hear it. We knew he had been sick for quite some time. It leaves a very empty place in your family circle. May the Lord Himself fill that place. Give our greetings and sympathy to your parents and grandmother.

ANNEMARIE ROZENDAAL — It was nice to hear from you, Annemarie. Do you live on a farm now? How long did you live in South Africa? It is always difficult to learn another language, but it seems you are already familiar with the English language. Do you like it in Canada?

MARY BOSCH — We too are in the season between summer and winter, Mary, but yours is the fall season and we have the spring time. The weather is not always to our liking, but it is also not under our control. There can be many complaints about the weather, but we then must be reminded that the Lord has it in His hands.

JUDITH VERHEIJ — You must have a large lego set, Judith, if you can make a town out of it. Much time is spent by man to build and to make the things which we need day by day. Then we can see something of the power and greatness of the Lord, who created all things in six days, and that by the word of His mouth.

ALINE BOSCH — Do you find your subjects at school to be quite difficult this year, Aline? Every year you advance, but hopefully you are building on what you learned the year before. Do you know what the Bible tells us is the beginning of wisdom? We hope that many boys and girls may say with a certain man in Scripture, “I fear the Lord from my youth.” Do you know who that was?

REUBEN KREFT — It sounds as if you too would like to work with the vet, Reuben, just as Derek does. How many calves do you now have on the farm? Do you keep them all until they are grown, or do you sell some of them while they are still young? The Bible speaks quite often about sheep and lambs, so I’m sure you can see how well they are described for us there.

Many thanks to all the boys and girls for their answers to the quiz. God’s Word is given us for instruction, and we pray that it may serve that purpose in the hearts and lives of all of us.

With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

The Best Book

All worthless books away I’d throw,
Whatever may result;
These eyes were never given, I know,
My Maker to insult.

Lord, give me grace to shun all books,
Which lead from heaven and Thee;
And make Thy Word, Most Holy One,
More precious unto me.
