BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
March is the month which brings us the change of seasons into the springtime of the year. This always seems to be most welcome, because then the winter is far gone. Even though we may like the winter season, it is especially nice to see the flowers blooming and the trees blossoming, but also to hear the singing of the birds. It is the season in which the crops are sown in the fields, and gardens are then planted, all with the hope and expectation that a harvest time will follow.
However, five small words in the Bible written by the apostle Paul remind us that something more is needed than just planting and sowing seeds. “God must give the increase.” When we put a small seed into the ground, can we be certain that it will bring forth the expected results? There have been many who have been disappointed in their expectations. Too much sun or too much rain, a hail storm, heavy winds, animals, all these can do much damage to tender plants during the growing season. How true it is that God must give His blessing upon our efforts. But do we always think about this? Even at school or in other types of work, are we aware of our need of the Lord for His help in order to prosper?
During March a day of prayer is set aside to bring our needs before Him. Is it just a custom, or do we feel something of our great need? Troubles of all kinds can and do come upon us in natural life, and where do we go with them? We also know of an even greater need, the need for a new heart. Are we also seeking such a blessing from the hand of the Lord? We can be careful and troubled about many things, but the Lord Jesus said to Martha, “One thing is needful.” He pointed out that the care of the soul is of far greater importance than all the cares of daily life. He told Martha that one should be careful and troubled about something more than food and drink.
The Lord in His Word teaches us what is necessary, but He also points out where this necessary thing may be found. How important it is that we also be troubled about finding this, for then we will be glad to read the words which the psalmist wrote in Psalm 46. They are the six words spelled out by the answers to the quiz. In answering the quiz you will find examples of how true this has been in the past, but it is also true today.

And now there are again some letters to be answered -
KRISTY VAN TILBURG — We haven’t found any reason why your names were not listed, Kristy, but we’ll try not to let it happen again. The names are usually one month behind, but possibly something was overlooked. Are you glad to see the winter months almost behind us again?
HENRY VRUGTEVEEN — Do you have your woodworking class several days during the week, Henry? Many years ago I made a small table lamp in woodworking class, and we still have it today. We hope the things which you learn from God’s Word as you do the Bible quiz may also be useful in your later life. The things we learn in our early years are often long remembered.
GORDON MALJAARS — It was nice to hear from you, Gordon. We read that Timothy also was favored with Bible instruction in his younger years, and we may be sure that he was always glad about it. Are you studying about any particular part of Scripture at the present time?
SUZANNE VAN DEN BOSCH — Congratulations on the new niece, Suzanne. Does your sister live near you? Just as with grandchildren, when they live quite far from you, you don’t see them as often as you would like. Just think what it must have been years ago when even twenty miles was a long journey.
JACKY KLOK — We’ve never thought about numbering the questions, Jacky, but we might try that next time. We had temperatures here of almost twenty below zero this winter, which we consider quite cold. That’s Fahrenheit temperature, but I’ll leave that to you to convert it to centigrade.
NICOLA BERTRAM — I guess bees do get angry when they are disturbed, Nicola, but no one cares to be stung. At times we hear of those who have reactions to bee stings, and then it can even be dangerous. Do you have quite a few hives? We read in the Bible about bees and honey. Do you know of an example?
JESSICA GROEN — What was your project, Jessica? Homework can keep you quite busy, I know, but postponing doing it does not get it done either. As little ones learn to move around and climb on things, it means they have to be watched more. But healthy children don’t sit still, so we cannot change this.
MARIA GRISNICH — I see there are two letters from you, Maria. If all is well, it will soon be your birthday. Although we will be late for it, we do hope it was a happy one. You wrote about the death of John the Baptist, which you were discussing at school, and we see that it took place on King Herod’s birthday.
DAVID ARNOLDUSSEN — Welcome to the Bible quiz, David. There is so much to learn from God’s Word, and even if we are getting older, we find much that we never thought about as we were reading it in the past. I think that we stayed at your grandmother’s house quite a few years ago. Say hello to her for us.
ALLAN MALJAARS — We are quite well, Allan, and were glad to receive your letter. Do you have quite a few animals on your farm? Thank you also for the prayer which you sent. We hope you may never forget to pray such a prayer, for those needs are always with us.
STEFANIE GRISNICH — The spies who came to the city of Jericho were on a dangerous mission, weren’t they, Stefanie? But then we see again how the Lord provides for His people, making a way for them through all dangers. There is a book with the title, Through Many Dangers, but that same book could be written over and over again.
JEREMY BERTRAM — I had never heard of a fish called kawhai, Jeremy, so that must be native to your part of the world. Are they good eating? I would assume so, since you caught quite a few. We do read in the Bible about fish, but the particular kinds of fish are not told us.
LARRY MALJAARS — Yes, Larry, we have had quite a lot of snow this winter. Much of it has melted because of some warmer weather, but now they are predicting more snow for tonight and also later in the week. A nice day in February can remind us of spring, but we find that winter is still with us. We hope to hear from you again.
KARIN BERTRAM — Congratulations to your grandparents on their anniversary, Karin. Although it seems like a long time to you, I’m sure they will say that it does not to them. For you the warmer weather will soon be past. The Lord spoke to Noah about the changing seasons. Do you know what was said about them?
JENNIFER VAN BRUGGE — Yes, Jennifer, mistakes do creep in, no matter how hard we try to eliminate them. Even though we check and doublecheck, there always seem to be some errors. We do read in the Bible of several things which are perfect. Do you have any idea what these might be? If you have a concordance, you will find them quite quickly.
This again finishes our letters. Many thanks to all who answered the quiz, and we look forward, the Lord willing, to hearing from you again next month. May He provide for us in all our needs as we travel on our journey through this world.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
