MISSION NEWS

The Lord willing, on February 1, Mr. Gerard Bron of the Lethbridge congregation will depart for Bolivia to assist in the mission activites with Rev. Bazen. He will be involved with technical and agricultural support for the mission team for a three-month period. Accompanying him will be his wife, Christine, and four children.

This is a tentative assignment for them, but if everything goes well, they will then be sent to Costa Rica for language training in order to better equip them for this work. It is our prayer that the Lord may go with them, enabling them to experience in a foreign country that the Lord does provide. We wish them well.

CURRENT EVENTS

Elders on
Legalizing Drugs

The New American reported that Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders recently advocated legalization of narcotic drugs. She stated that it would “markedly reduce our crime rate,” and suggested that the idea had sufficient merit for the government to study its adoption. The comments were quickly repudiated by the White House, with a spokeswoman noting (as did Elders) that she was not “speaking for the administration.” Senator D. Nickles (R-Okla.) was outraged, calling for Elders’ replacement and wondered about the “kind of message this sent to parents, teachers, and law-enforcement officers who have spent a lifetime teaching young people that drugs can kill them, ruin their mind, and ruin their futures.”

Senate to Vote
on Goals 2000

According to Family Voice, publication of Concerned Women for America, President Clinton’s Goals 2000 education bill will come up for a vote in late January or February. Concerned Women for America opposes Goals 2000 because it allows the federal government to usurp local control of education. And Goals 2000 will lead toward a national school board and a national curriculum. Senator C.Grassley (R-Iowa) will offer an amendment to Goals 2000 which protects children from psychological testing conducted without parental knowledge or approval. Please urge your senators to oppose Goals 2000.

“Home Education Week”
in Montana

In Montana, Gov. Stan Stephens recently declared May 7-11 as “Home Education Week.” He stated that Montana was “committed to excellence in education” which results in “many parents choosing to educate their children at home where individualized attention and family participation can be maximized to produce a quality education within the framework of family beliefs.” He also acknowledged the “many famous teachers and contributors to our society” who had been educated at home. These include: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Theodore Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, and Albert Einstein. We realize that not all families are able to educate their children at home, and so we ought to be very thankful for the Christian schools the Lord has given us. Nevertheless, we should remember that no one can ever fully replace the important role parents have in the education of their children.

School Prayer
Debated in Mississippi

According to the National & International Religion Report, the 21-word prayer read over the intercom at Wingfield High School in Jackson, Miss., began an open revolt. The firing of Bishop Knox, Wingfield’s soft-spoken principal, for allowing the prayer to be read, prompted walkouts and rallies by thousands of students in 15 Mississippi counties. A coalition of teachers, superintendents, and parents, both whites and blacks, supported the students and gathered at large rallies at the state Capitol. Gov. Kirk Fordice openly supported Knox, and several politicians plan to offer school prayer bills soon. The Jackson school board reversed the firing, but suspended Knox without pay for the rest of the school year because he showed “a lack of professional judgment,” Although school-sponsored prayer has been banned since 1962, the issue has never been fully settled. Many schools, especially in the South, openly ignore the prohibition. We need to pray everyday that this country will get back to its Christian roots. The only “separation of church and state” that our founding fathers advocated was that there shouldn’t be a state church. They didn’t want the country to be ruled by one denomination.

Dedication of
New Church Building

The First Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Grand Rapids dedicated a new church building Wednesday evening, January 26, 1994. Our moderator, Rev. J. Spaans, conducted the special service from Exodus 15:27, “And they came to Elim...” What a wonder! For sinners, for the rebellious, for those poor murmurers, for such people the Lord yet grants an Elim, a place of refreshing and rest. There they found twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees, enough to provide for the whole nation of Israel.

May the Lord yet abide with us in this new church building, and may it become an Elim to us. May God grant true brokenness of heart and true repentance, putting away the vain and foolish things of this world. Come, let us return unto the Lord with prayer and supplications and thanksgivings. It is our hope that the Lord might fill this place with His presence, and that He may grant it for His Name’s sake only.

The dedication service was well attended, with more than 300 present. Three services are held each Sunday. The Lord has wonderfully provided this building for us after worshipping in a school gymnasium for six months.

Our new address is 1261 Beckwith N.E., Grand Rapids, Michigan 49505.
