BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

Again we have a crossword puzzle this month. As usual it is based on the texts shown for the Heidelberg Catechism in the back of your Psalter. This time it will be about Lord’s Day 18. For those answers to be found in the texts shown, the question will be marked with an asterisk (*). Each text is used only once.

The 18th Lord’s Day is about the ascension of the Lord Jesus. About thirty-three years before the ascension He came upon the earth as a little child in Bethlehem, but the time came that He was to leave this sinful world behind. The work which was to be done here by Him, as laid upon Him by His Father, was finished. In the previous Lord’s Days which we have already covered, we have seen what that work was. It was a work which no one but He could do. And He could do it, because He was not only man, but also God, in one Person.

After He arose from the grave, His disciples no longer saw Him daily. But when He did appear unto them, how glad they were. He was still teaching them. Luke tells us, “Then opened He their understanding.” This is what we all need, even though we may know much about God’s Word. How we need to pray unto the Lord with the psalmist, “Shew me Thy ways, O Lord; teach me Thy paths. Lead Me
in Thy truth, and teach me.” He is still teaching people by His Word and Spirit, even though He is now in heaven.

Again there are letters to answer

IRENE VERHEIJ — Holidays always seem to go by quickly, don’t they, Irene? Seven weeks is quite a while, but they are soon gone. While you are making hay, we are busy shoveling snow, and the weather has been more wintery than in recent years. There must be two feet of snow on the ground at the moment.

ALINE BOSCH — Are you glad that school has started again, Aline? It is nice to have holidays, but most boys and girls are happy to return to school. Did you go on a trip with your family? There was a time when 50 miles was a long journey, but today it is considered just an outing.

EDSON KREFT — How nice it was to hear from you, Edson. You must have quite a few deer in that part of the country, or otherwise Derek is an exceptionally good marksman. Do you help your dad with some of the chores? I’m sure there are always lots of things to do.

SUZANNE VAN DEN BOSCH — We are quite well, Suzanne, although the last few days I have been bothered with a cold. Did the new baby arrive? It must always be a wonder when a healthy child is brought into the world. As with all of our blessings, we sometimes forget the Giver of them.

JUDITH VERHEIJ — Thank you for the card which you sent along with your letter and answers, Judith. The beauties of nature are so impressive, and when looking at mountain scenes, we realize how small we are in comparison. This caused the psalmist to say, “Lord, what is man, that Thou art mindful of him?”

REUBEN KREFT — Yes, Reuben, it was a long time ago when we visited your family. We live in the city, so farms are always very interesting for us. If the Lord spares us, we hope we may be able to make another visit sometime. You have become quite a bit older, but we have too.

MARY BOSCH — You did receive lots of things for your birthday, Mary. Birthdays are special days, because we also take notice that the Lord has spared us and provided for us for another year. The Bible also mentions birthdays of certain persons. Do you know of any?

JUSTUS VERHEIJ — Congratulations on the good report card, Justus. It shows the result of hard work at school. We received your school annual a week or so ago and really enjoyed seeing all of the things which take place there, also, of course, all of our young friends.

BYRON KREFT — Yes, Byron, we are always glad to see the mailman come, even though it means some work for us. Only one of our daughters lives in Kalamazoo, two live near Grand Rapids, and one lives near Chicago. Our congratulations also to your grandparents on their anniversary. How is your grandfather at the present? May the Lord remember them together.

That finishes the letters for this time. Again many thanks for the answers to the quiz. May all of us, whether we are younger or older, bring our needs and those of our loved ones before the Lord in prayer, for He alone can supply us in those needs.

With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
