Sickness of Mrs. Arnoud Vergunst
As you may already know, the wife of our student for the ministry has been afflicted with a serious disease. After the Lord had gladdened her and her husband with the birth of their fifth child, Benjamin Andrew, she did not feel too well. Extreme headaches gave much concern. She was admitted to the hospital, where CT scans revealed a large brain tumor, part of which was removed by surgery soon afterwards. Further treatment will be necessary.
Due to their circumstances, the Curatorium agreed that it would be best for them to move back to Kalamazoo, where their parents and other relatives live. In order to guide him further through his last half-year of study, some arrangements will be made, the Lord willing. It will involve some traveling for me to Michigan, and, as far as the family situation will allow, student Vergunst will also make some trips to New Jersey to receive instruction. When in Kalamazoo, brother Vergunst hopes to serve the neighboring congregations as much as possible on the Lord’s Days.
At the present our main concern is for his family and especially for his dear wife. It is truly a heavy way of affliction and a severe trial for them. God’s Word says in Psalm 77:19, “Thy way is in the sea, and Thy path in the great waters, and Thy footsteps are not known.” It is our sincere wish that God may be their refuge and strength, and their very present help in trouble.
In Deuteronomy 33:3 we read, “...all His saints are in Thy hand.” I know that student Vergunst has also spoken about this text in the congregations. It is our wish that the preciousness of this safety of God’s care and protection may be experienced by them. It is especially our wish that the Lord may remember Mrs. Arnoud Vergunst. Her life is in His hands. May she be given to flee to the heavenly Physician, who says, “I am the Lord that healeth thee.”
No case is hopeless for Him. He is the Almighty Physician for soul and body. And he or she that cometh unto Him, He will in no wise cast out. May she, as the leper, say, “Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean.” Oh, then what a wonder if a burdened sinner may hear from His lips, “I will; be thou clean.”
We commend the Vergunst family in your prayers. May the Lord graciously provide in all their needs, and may His Name be glorified through this way of trials.
