The Sickness and Concerns of our Emeritus Ministers
The consistory of Lethbridge informed us that Rev. Heerschap was again admitted to the hospital. At our last visit with him, he could tell how the Lord had greatly encouraged him in all his tribulations and sorrow. There was a desire to be with the Lord, and of this he had received a foretaste. Nevertheless, his way is very difficult for the flesh. There were moments when he was discouraged under them, but the Lord showed him how His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who was without sin, had to go a much deeper way when He had to undergo the wrath of God against our sins. Then He cried out, “I thirst.” Our brother was so instructed out of this, that he was fully united with the will of God. It is our wish that he may be administered daily out of the fullness of Christ, for then there is rest.
Rev. Kieboom’s condition does not vary much. Physically he is quite healthy, but he has to remain in the nursing home. He receives very good care there, and his wife can visit him every day. May he also experience the presence of the Lord, which is more than everything else.
In the family of Rev. Kuijt there are also concerns, as their daughter Leah has a serious illness and is undergoing treatment. There is nothing too wonderful for the heavenly Physician, and He is able to bless the means for her. Above all, may it be a means in God’s hand so that she can no longer miss the Lord. May the Lord also remember them together.
Rev. and Mrs. Verhoef are now nicely settled in Alberta. Although the weight of the years is felt, he may still occasionally preach a Dutch sermon. May the Lord bless these labors to the glory of His Name and the extension of His kingdom.
We hope that the Lord may give prayer for these circumstances of our emeritus ministers, who have spent so many years in our midst, in the Netherlands, and on the mission fields. The apostle has said, “Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the Word of God” (Hebrews 13:7a).
We remember also the three ministerial widows in our midst, especially again at the close of this year. May there also continually be experienced in their lives that which Isaiah wrote, “For thy Maker is thine Husband; the Lord of hosts is His Name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall He be called” (Isaiah 54:5).
