BIBLE QUIZ

13 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

Again this month we have a crossword puzzle for you. It uses the texts which are listed with Lord’s Day 14 of the Heidelberg Catechism in the back of your Psalter. If you will recall, the answers which will be found in these texts are marked with an asterisk (*).

This Lord’s Day of the Catechism speaks to us about the birth of the Lord Jesus. It was only a few months ago that we observed Christmas, but it is necessary to speak time and again of His coming into the world. The reason for His coming should be well-known to us, but the wonder of it can never be fully realized.

In the nations of the world where a king still reigns, we would not expect the king to willingly leave his riches and throne and become a poor and humble servant. But this the Lord Jesus has done for His people. The Old Testament spoke often of His coming, but there also came a time when the angel said to the shepherds, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

Today the world around us wants to close their eyes for the real purpose and meaning of Christmas, and they are often offended when His Name is mentioned. In this way the cry of the chief priests and rulers and the people at Jerusalem, “Away with Him; crucify Him,” is still heard today. May the Lord grant us to see our need of Him, and because of this, draw us with the shepherds and the wise men unto Him. The apostle said so plainly, “There is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.” You are not too young, for He Himself said to His disciples, “Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not.”

Again there are letters to answer —

Bridget Touw

Thank you for the letter and picture which you sent, Bridget. The work of a shepherd was not always an easy job, since they stayed with their flock also during the night. Shepherds are mentioned quite often in the Bible. Congratulations on your birthday. Did you have some nice surprises?

Kim Stapel

That was a good question which you asked, Kim. The best answer I can give you is found in Lord’s Day 33 of our Catechism. There you will see that conversion brings forth both sorrow and joy. We must ask the Lord much for such a blessing, and must ask for it every day again. Will you remember to do this?

Rachel Kik

It was nice to hear from you, Rachel. Archaeology must certainly be an interesting kind of work. Do you read a lot about this subject? We know that ruins of cities which existed in Bible times have been uncovered. They give clear proof to us of the truth of God’s Word. Which Bible book did you finish?

Daniel Geuze

I see from your map that you are never very far from the sea, Daniel. How many miles is it from your house to your grandparents? Were you glad to be back in school again? Your summer holidays are not as long as they are here in the United States. Perhaps you have more time off during the school year.

Jocelyn den Hertog

We welcome you to the Bible quiz, Jocelyn, and are glad to hear that you enjoyed it. There is so much to learn in the Bible, and even when we become older, we are still learning every day. It must be our prayer that it also be our guide, just as the psalmist mentioned — a lamp and a light as we travel through the world.

Rita de Vos

We heard from someone else that their Banner was missing the Bible quiz, Rita. It must have been a printing error, which does happen sometime. Did you have a good trip to Canada? I suppose you had to miss school for a few weeks, so you were busy when you returned. Or perhaps you took lots of work with you.

Eric Bosch

What part of farm work do you like best, Eric? The work all has to be done, so perhaps that isn’t a good question. Daniel had sent me a map of New Zealand, but I couldn’t find Raumati on it. Although it is already the middle of March as I am writing this, we still have snow on the ground.

James Boumeester

We are doing quite well, James. Congratulations on the new baby brother. Do you have other brothers? In the Bible we read how that Joshua once said, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” We pray that there may be many Joshuas and others who will say the same thing.

Sherri den Herder

We welcome you as another new member of our Bible quiz, Sherri. And congratulations also on the new baby sister. Yes, how thankful we must be for all that which the Lord gives unto us. We especially need a thankful heart in order to be thankful, for even that has to be given us by the Lord.

Aline Bosch

We hope you are feeling better again, Aline. It is a great blessing that doctors and medicines are available when we are sick, but these means must also be blessed by the Lord. Of King Asa we read, “in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians.” Are we not often guilty of doing the same?

Stephanie Geuze

It seems that quite a few boys and girls like the crossword puzzles, Stephanie. There are then quite a few more words to search out, but since part of each word is spelled out by other words, it does make it easier to come up with the answer. The important part is that the Bible be used to find these answers.

Rebecca Kwekel

We are glad to hear that you enjoy doing the quiz, Rebecca. The Bible should be an important book for every day of our life, but how good it is to see boys and girls familiar with it when they are still young. Solomon, the wisest of kings, said, “Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth,” and we hope the quiz may be a means for this.

Mary Bosch

Did your grandmother arrivé home safely again, Mary? I’m sure it was nice to have her and your uncle visit you. No doubt she could see many changes which took place in those six years since she had visited you before, especially how much her grandchildren had grown. Do you still speak the Holland language quite well?

John Vander Wiele

It was nice to receive your note along with your answers, John. Beginners need help, but it is surprising how soon you will be able to find many answers without any help. We hope all of us may learn more and more that which the psalmist had learned, “Our help is in the Name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” He is the perfect Helper.

Suzanne Van den Bosch

At which city of New Zealand do your visitors from across the ocean usually arrive, Suzanne? I suppose their arrival is always a happy occasion, but saying “Good-bye” is not as pleasant. Because of the distance, it is not a trip that is made that often, and so much can take place in a period of one or two years.

Kristen and Peter Van Grouw

We are always glad to see answers to the quiz arrive. It would be very discouraging if we didn’t receive any at all. Above all else, we hope that the boys and girls may learn to know their Bibles well, so that even if they are not sent in, it may yet be of benefit to them.

Trina Huisman

I’m sure there are quite a few nice things about school if you only stop to think about it, Trina. There are many boys and girls who do not have the great privilege of an education in a Christian school, and there are even those who miss an education altogether. Work is our calling, and it is a blessing if we may do it with pleasure.

Maria Vander Jagt

Your letter will be the last one this time, Maria. There were quite a few, as you can see. Your note was only a short one, but we can perhaps expect another one next month. What are you studying about in school at the moment? It won’t be long and the summer vacation will soon be here again.

Many thanks, boys and girls, for the replies to the quiz. We hope, the Lord willing, to meet with you again next month. Last Sunday morning our elder in Kalamazoo, Mr. John Beeke, was serving the congregation in reading a sermon, but had a heart attack and died. Here again we may see the uncertainty of our life and how that we do not know what will take place with us tomorrow, next week, or next month. It is for this reason that James wrote, “For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” May the Lord spare us with our loved ones, teaching us to look unto Him in all our needs.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”
