THE TONGUE
To all mankind God gave a tongue
To glorify His Name;
But since the fall not one of us
Has strength the tongue to tame.
The world has no concern at all
And takes God’s Name in vain;
They blaspheme Him who gives them life
Without remorse or pain.
But it is not the world alone
Whose tongue is like a fire;
That spews iniquity and sin
And utters so much ire.
God’s people too have much to mourn
And find to their dismay;
They can’t control their evil tongue
That plagues them day by day.
The tongue God gave is now a slave
Of all perversity;
We bless the Lord and curse a man
These things ought not to be.
Keep Thou my tongue from words that grieve
Thy Spirit and my soul;
And may I ever be constrained
By Thy divine control.
May I not censure those whose views
Are different from my own;
But may I always look to Thee
And follow Thee alone.
Oh may the beam that’s in my eye
Block others from my view;
So that I do not criticize
The things they say or do.
Put Thou a bridle on my tongue
My strength and refuge be;
And may Thy Spirit keep Thy fear
In exercise in me.
Then when my journey is complete
And I awake with Thee;
My mouth shall sing, my tongue shall praise
Thy name eternally.
