NEED, SORROW, AND JOY
From Lethbridge we have received word that our emeritus brother, Rev. M. Heerschap, who became eighty-one years old on September 24, is awaiting an opening to undergo surgery due to cancer in his throat. May the Lord graciously supply in his every need, granting him and his wife to experience: “And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen” (Gen. 22:14).
On August 31 Rev. C. Molenaar passed away at the age of 76. He served for nearly twenty-five years as a minister of the gospel in our sister denomination in the Netherlands. He pastored four churches during that period: Leiden (1956-1960), Moerkapelle (1960-1967), Amsterdam-North (1967-1971), and Kapelle-Biezelinge (1971-1980). He became an emeritus minister on May 1, 1980.
May the Lord graciously strengthen the mourning family and fill empty pulpits with men of His choosing and sending.
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them” (Rev. 14:13).
Also, from our North American congregations we wish to extend heartfelt sympathy to Rev. and Mrs. C. Harinck, and to their 33-year-old daughter with her four children, in the loss of their beloved 37-year-old son-in-law, husband, and father. The Lord has led the family through deep ways, but they may acknowledge that they do not sorrow as those altogether without hope. May the Lord fill the empty place with His presence, undergirding the widow and mourning families with His everlasting arms. “What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter” (John 13:7).
Thy way, O God, was in the sea,
But, though Thy paths mysterious be,
Thy people Thou didst safely keep
As shepherds lead their helpless sheep.
— Psalter 209:11
(Rev. and Mrs. Harinck’s address is Noordweg 36, 4356 ED Oostkapelle, The Netherlands.)
At a Classis meeting held in Rijssen, the Netherlands on August 10, Rev. A.W. Verhoef received permission to become an emeritus minister on November 12, D.V. Subsequently, he and his wife hope to return to Alberta to live in the midst of their children. May the Lord graciously grant that the labors performed throughout the twenty-nine years of his ministry may continue to bear the stamp of divine approval and blessing. We heartily wish our brother and his wife the Lord’s richest blessings in their future plans, and pray that He may make all things well.
Finally, on September 24 my wife and I were blessed with a second child and our first daughter, Esther Idelette (Idelette was the name of John Calvin’s God-fearing wife). Shortly after birth she developed some problems with rapid breathing and had to remain in the special care nursery for five days, but the Lord has made all things well and granted us the joy of bringing her home. May God grant the realization of a second miracle, namely, that of Psalm 22:30-31, so that she may become a true “Esther” before the King of kings, confessing at His footstool, “If I perish, I perish, but then I will perish at the King’s feet” We wish to express our hearty thanks to all those who have remembered us during these days in various ways. Your thoughtfulness has been much appreciated. The Lord is good.
In need, sorrow, and joy, may the Lord remember His servants and families. Without the Lord we can do nothing. Without grace, we cannot be truly sorrowful nor truly thankful.

YOUTH CONFERENCE — CLASSIS EAST
Present in Kalamazoo on July 4th were several hundred young people (and some older ones) who had gathered for the 1992 Youth Conference of Classis East. The weather was ideal for the occasion. Rev. J. R. Beeke, moderator for Kalamazoo, opened the conference, requesting the singing of Psalter 428:3. He read 1 Kings 29 and then offered prayer for the Lord’s blessing upon that which would be heard.
Eric Schipper polled the audience as to their home congregations, and it was found that almost all of the Classis East congregations were represented, as well as some from the Netherlands.
The first speaker, Rev. C. Vogelaar, spoke on the subject, “Does the Church still have a Future?” This was a question once asked him by a stranger while he was yet a student for the ministry. In answering this question, Rev. Vogelaar pointed out how the church is to be viewed, the characteristics and marks of that church, and also the marks of a true member of it.
After the singing of some selections by the Grand Rapids choir directed by Mrs. Tillie Lamain, Student A. Vergunst spoke on the subject, “Leisure Time and Entertainment” He presented a handout which gave various scriptural references pertaining to his topic, an outline of the various aspects of his address, and some practical suggestions for leisure activities. He stated that time is a precious gift which needs to be redeemed, carrying with it a responsibility to divide it rightly. Leisure time, upon which he primarily focused, was not to be spent in idleness but to be improved upon, since it is to be looked upon as given by the Lord for preparation for the eternity which is to follow.
Opportunity was then given to submit questions. A portion of these were answered prior to the noon lunch. Elder N. Timmer of Kalamazoo closed the morning session with prayer, also asking a blessing upon the noon meal which was served by women of the Kalamazoo congregation.
Rev. Vogelaar opened the afternoon session with the reading of Hebrews 12:1-14 and prayer. A Bible quiz was then held for the younger children present led by Elder Garret Moerdyk, after which an organ-violin duet was rendered by Mr. H. Hofman and Mrs. R. Hembd, both of Kalamazoo. Rev. Beeke then spoke on “Life’s Most Important Race” (Heb. 12:1-2), directing attention to twelve guidelines for running the true Christian race. This was not to be done in one’s own strength, but with a seeking for grace to do so.
Questions were again submitted by the audience and opportunity was then given for the speakers to give answers to these questions. Student Vergunst closed the conference with prayer.
May the Lord Himself bless the instruction given, further instructing young and old in the way that we should go. A picnic supper was provided later in the day and thus another Youth Day came to a close.

FAR-WEST THREE-DAY YOUTH CONFERENCE
From Tuesday afternoon, July 21, through Friday morning, July 24, 180 young people, speakers, and chaperones met at Bear Paw Conference and Retreat Center in eastern Washington for this year’s Youth Conference. It was nice to see young people participating from so many different congregations across Canada and the United States: Franklin Lakes, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Sheboygan, Sioux Center, Artesia, Lethbridge, Fort Macleod, Sunnyside, Lynden, and Chilliwack, as well as the Netherlands.
Eight informative and practical topics were presented to us by office-bearers of our denomination. Booklets were provided for us which included outlines for all topics, program schedules, camp rules, and cabin assignments.
On Tuesday evening, Dr. J.R. Beeke addressed us on “Gideon, A Mighty Man of Valor: The Secrets of a Successful Life.” Wednesday morning, Mr. G. Nieuwenhuis, the administrator for our Dutch Mission Board, spoke to us on “Mission-workers: What Sort of People are Needed?” and Dr. A. Van Grouw on “God Glorified in His Creation of Man.” In the evening, Rev. H. Hofman spoke on “Conscience and Guilt.” Afterwards, our six speakers took turns answering the questions submitted. Thursday morning. Dr. A. Van Grouw presented a topic on “Aids - Is It a Gift?” and Elder J.W. Beeke spoke to us on “Questions Young People Ask.” In the afternoon, Mr. G. Nieuwenhuis shared his slides with us of his recent trip to Russia. That evening Rev. A.M. den Boer spoke to us on “Faith Healing or Healing on Prayer.” After breakfast, cleaning, and packing on our last day, Rev. H. Hofman presented our closing topic on “Freedom.”
In addition to the group discussion times each afternoon and around the campfire at night, many individual conversations of a more spiritual and personal nature took place with the office-bearers present. We wish to express our appreciation to each of them for this. Mr. C. Les provided many dedicated hours of service as Camp Coordinator. We also wish to thank our cooks, the chaperones, and all who made this opportunity possible for us. After thanking everyone for their excellent cooperation for these days, we sadly parted — our 1992 Youth Conference ended. May God bless the instruction we received and fellowship we experienced during our days together.
Tapes are available for each of these topics and may be ordered for $2.00 each (complete set, $16.00 US funds) from “The Tape Room,” 540 Crescent St. NE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503.

Fetal Tissue Implant Veto Sustained
The House of Representatives fell short of the needed two-thirds vote to override a Presidential veto of a bill that would have allowed experimental use of fetal tissue from aborted children.
President Proposing “Cl. Bill for Children”
President Bush has proposed a promising measure toward increasing parental choice in regard to children’s education. The so-called “G.l. Bill for Children” would fund “$1,000 scholarships [in addition to any extra support from non-federal sources] to middle and low income families to be spent at any lawfully operating school — public, private, or religious.” This initiative is set to go before Congress at the beginning of 1993. Local governmental cooperation is a necessity, as spelled out by the proposal. One question is whether our own, or other private schools, would have any input into screening prospective students, should the school agree to be part of the program. Please consider contacting your Congressional representatives to inquire further into this matter.
