BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
As summer rapidly draws near, we begin to make plans as to what we shall do during the summer months. Some will find it possible to do some travelling possibly to visit grandparents and other relatives living in different parts of the country or even on the other side of the ocean. All of our plans are never certain, and we must always think about the instruction which is found in the book of James, who said, “Ye ought to say, if the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
In making our plans, especially if we are to travel some distance to places where we have never been before, we seek reliable advice as to the best way to reach our destination. Sometimes we prefer the most scenic route, so that we can stop here or there along the way. At other times we may want to know the shortest and fastest way in order to arrive there quickly. Both routes bring us to the same place, so much depends upon the time we have for travelling. Perhaps we may select one route on the way there and the other route on the way home.
There is one journey which we make which is made only once and from which place we do not return. It is our journey to eternity. The Bible speaks to us about two ways for us as travellers to eternity. We read of them in Matthew 7:13 and 14. However, you will notice that they do not end at the same place. The one seems to be an easier and nicer way, but the place to which it leads is destruction. How necessary then that we consult our maps carefully and listen to good instruction to lead us in a right way.
I am sure that all of us have the maps and directions in our homes, so we do not lack there. We cannot find a more reliable source than the Word of God. It is mentioned in Psalter 322, where the poet sang,
How shall the young direct their way?
What light shall be their perfect guide?
And the answer is promply given us,
Thy Word, O Lord, will safely lead,
If in its wisdom they confide.
In another psalter we hear the poet begging for further instruction as he travels with this map. He cries out, “O let Thy Spirit be my constant aid.”
With God’s Word and His Spirit directing us, we cannot fail to travel that way unto life. Our prayer must join in with that of the poet, pleading that all our ways may ever be directed to keep God’s statutes.
Our quiz this month is about the Word of God as our guide in this life. The first letters of the answers will spell out eight words found in Psalm 119.

Rachel Kik
Your letter will be the first one, Rachel. Is your garden doing quite well this summer? From the Bible we also know that some years crops can be very fruitful, but other years not much is produced. Do you have a stand in front of your house where you sell your crops?
Andrelei Van Hierden
Welcome to the Bible quiz, Andrelei. As you work out the quiz each month, you will find that they become easier to do. This isn’t because the quiz is easier, but probably because you learn to know your Bible a little better each time. Did you get the other pig which you wrote about?
Justus Verheij
Thanks for the photo, Justus. Since we live so far apart, it is especially nice to meet a person by means of a picture. Weddings are such special occasions, aren’t they? Do you know of examples in the Bible where we may read about weddings?

Leanne Les
Will you be building your new house near where you live now, Leanne? Some move long distances, while others move just around the corner or next door. Yes, a long life is a blessing if we may spend it in a right way. Psalm 90 tells us that not many people will become 100 years old. Do you know how old it says that most people will become?
Derek Kreft
We are quite well, Derek. Our weather has also turned quite nice, and most everyone likes nice weather. Did you get the rain that you needed? Farmers are especially dependent upon the weather, and need both the sunshine and the rain. It sounds like your house is really taking shape. Give our congratulations to your grandparents on their anniversary.
Daniel Geuze
Do you like science, Daniel? The more we study about it, the more amazed we must be at what takes place in the world of science. We are always reminded of that which one inventor said about his invention. His remark was, “What hath God wrought!” We may see the God-given wisdom in all the wonderful things which are possible today in the field of science.
Rita De Vos
We were surprised to receive an answer to the quiz from Holland, Rita, but now you have cleared it up for us. Did you live in Canada quite a few years? I don’t imagine you have as much problem in your English class as some of your friends do. Do you know your Dutch quite well? Maybe that is more of a problem for you.
Eric Bosch
How far did you run, Eric? Paul in his epistle to the Corinthians wrote about running a race. You should look it up and see what he wrote about it. Elsewhere in the Bible we also read about runners. Often messages were carried by runners, since there were no then no modern means of communication. Can you find some examples?
Irene Verheij
In the Acts of the Apostles we also read much about missionary work, Irene. Then as well as now it has never been an easy task to bring the Word of God to those who have never heard it before. Do you think you would like to do that work? There are many different needs there than here, but the need of souls is the same.
Cindy Kreft
Did you enjoy your class field trip, Cindy? Is there quite a lot to see in Edmonton? As we study Paul’s epistles, we find that also many centuries ago there was need for instruction, even as there is today. Some would have us think that the Bible is out of date, but if studied carefully, we are no different than those people and we need the blessing upon His Word, just as they did.
Aline Bosch
Your baby brother is probably getting lots of attention, isn’t he, Aline? It was good to hear that you are getting good marks in Bible Doctrine. What are you studying about at present? The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy about the great blessing that he had in knowing the Scriptures from childhood. We may value such instruction highly.
Mark Esseltine
Your answers arrived in ample time, Mark. You asked about the word Selah, which we find quite often in the book of Psalms. Many feel that it means a lifting up of the voice, and therefore indicates a pause. You will find a number of opinions about it. Do you know what other book of the Bible contains the word Selah, other than the book of Psalms?
Mary Bosch
It looks like your letter is the last one this time, Mary. Thank you for the picture of you and the baby. I can imagine that you would have liked a baby sister, but I’m also sure that you wouldn’t trade him now. We must always remember the line of the psalter, which reads, “A gift of God in very truth.”
This again concludes the letters. Many thanks, boys and girls, for your replies to the quiz. For most it will now be vacation time, but that doesn’t mean to put the Bible also to one side. May it be for all of us our daily meditation, wherever we are and wherever we go.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
