BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
Another month has passed by, and we again may have a Bible Quiz for you. The months seem to go by so quickly, but we also know how many things can happen in a month’s time. There are many, many minutes in a month, and every moment we are doing something — whether it is sleeping talking, walking, playing, reading, studying, or even just thinking. People around us can see what we are doing, but they do not know our thoughts. Sometimes we show by the looks on our faces what we are thinking, but that is not always true. However, we must remember that which the poet in Psalter 13 said, “For God who is just tries the thoughts of the heart.”
In the days of Noah we read, “God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Is it different today? Is it different with us? What a need there is to ask the Lord to forgive our sins in thoughts, as well as in words and in deeds! We must ask Him to teach us to fear Him and to walk in His ways.
The Bible tells us of those for whom the Lord has done this. Then even in difficult moments of their lives they were enabled to honor Him and show forth His praise. We may see this also in the lives of young people. Think, for example, of David, of Samuel, and of Naaman’s wife’s maid. Perhaps you can think of others. It should be our desire that this may also be said of us.
The quiz this month tells us of those who did have difficult times in their lives. However, in them we may also see the truth of that which we sing in Psalter 89:
The Lord may suffer many griefs
Upon the just to fall,
But He will bring them safely through,
Delivering them from all.
The first letters of the answers to the quiz spell out five words found in Psalm 11.

Again there are letters to answer —
Justus Air Verheij
Your letter is the first one this time, Justus. Are there any fish in your creek? I can see that I am not a very good farmer, since I do not know what a hay paddock is, nor do I know what you mean by shifting the calves. Perhaps you will have to give us an explanation, as I am sure there are others who also don’t know this.
Randy Ymker
Thank you for the letter, Randy. We received a note from your teacher also, telling us that you were doing the quiz in class. It looks like you should all get an “A” for that lesson. What are you studying in your Bible lessons at the moment? We hope you may always do well in Bible.
Jolene Slingerland
Were there quite a few lambs born on your farm this year, Jolene? We read quite often in the Bible about a lamb. For example, we know how David as a shepherd boy rescued a lamb from the lion and the bear. Do you know of some other Bible stories which tell us about a lamb? God’s Word also speaks about the Good Shepherd. Do you know who He Is?
Cindy Kreft
Is your new home very far away from where you now live, Cindy? We hope that your grandfather may continue to improve. Time and time again we see how quickly our health can be taken away from us, and this is also true for younger persons. If you didn’t live quite so far away, we would certainly try to visit your family again. Perhaps, the Lord willing, it will be possible to do so some time in the future.
Stephanie Geuze
What are you studying at present in social studies, Stephanie? Do you find it quite difficult to get the nutmeats out of the walnuts? We have quite a few oak trees, but unfortunately the acorns are not edible as are the walnuts. I was surprised to see that the Dutch queen had visited your country; it certainly was nice that you were able to see her.
Rebecca Kwekel
It is always good to show where you found your answer, Rebecca, since that shows that you have looked it up in your Bible. We hope that of many boys and girls it may be said as it was of Timothy, “You have known the Scriptures from your youth.” It must always be our prayer that the Lord may apply His Word in our hearts.
Eric Bosch
We will be waiting to hear about the arrival of the new baby, Eric. Are you hoping for another brother? Whether it Is a brother or a sister, I am sure you will be happy. We can only imagine what It must have been like In the time of Moses, when all the little boys who were born to the Israelites were to be thrown into the river.
Rebecca Duyzer
Welcome to the Bible quiz, Rebecca. It would be nice if you may some day visit your penpal Aline in New Zealand. Or maybe she can visit you. Have you ever figured out how many miles there are between you and Aline? We are glad that you enjoyed doing the Bible quiz, and hope to hear from you again next month.
Jeremy Bertram
Legos can keep you busy for a long time, Jeremy. It is always surprising to see how many pieces are necessary to make something. But this is also true when builders erect a large building. There are many pieces which fit together to make the completed project When the world was created, the Lord merely spoke and the things on the earth appeared at once.
Trevor Aleman
Thanks for an interesting letter, Trevor. How did the choir performance go? Do you have a large choir? We haven’t had much warm weather of late, although there was some early in March. Sometimes we become impatient for warmer weather, but we cannot control its coming. Perhaps someday they will print some loose-leaf Psalters just for organ playing. Others have asked about them, but we see that you made your own.
Jon Vanderberg
We are glad to have you join in answering the Bible quiz, Jon. Each time that you do the quiz, it will be somewhat easier, since in this way you learn to know your Bible better. Do you have to get up early to be on the school bus in the morning? Probably because you live on a farm, you have always been up early in the morning. Do write again.
Aline Bosch
It must have been quite a while ago that a minister visited your congregation, Aline, since there are that many babies to be baptized. Each time we see baptism administered, we are reminded that we too have that sign upon our foreheads. Although it cannot be seen, it should be seen in our lives that we are different from the world around us, even though we are no better than they
Karin Bertram
Thank you for the map drawing, Karin. I see that you are situated at the south end of the north island, and therefore not that far from the Pacific Ocean. For us in Kalamazoo both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are quite distant. Did your pictures of the queen turn out well? I didn’t know that a Hollander had discovered New Zealand, so you have taught me something new.
Derek Kreft
I suppose you spend quite a lot of time at the new house, Derek. Are you and your dad doing any of the construction work? There are always lots of details to be taken care of as the building progresses. The school year will soon be ended, but there will be enough things to be done, so that you won’t be idle. Have you had final exams at school already?
Mary Bosch
It is no doubt busy at your house with a new baby, Mary. You and Aline will be able to be very helpful. We read in the Bible of a big sister who was helpful in caring for her baby brother. Do you know who this would be? Little babies need special care, but we too who are older are in need of the providing care of the Lord from day to day, even though we too often do not give this any thought.
Irene Verheij
It was nice that your grandparents were able to be at the wedding, Irene. When they live so far away, the opportunity to be together is a very special time. I can still remember when my grandmother visited us from the Netherlands, and that has been more than fifty years ago. In those days travelling wasn’t quite as easy as it is today.
Rita De Vos
We were really surprised to receive an answer from the Netherlands, Rita, and so want to extend a special welcome to you. Do you receive the Banner of Truth every month? It is such a blessing that in all parts of the world the Word of God is brought unto us, and we pray that it may truly be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.

A welcome also to you, Rianne. With our Bible quiz there are also those who “graduate” after answering it for quite a few years, and therefore we are always glad to see new ones added. There are quite a few who answered the quiz in earlier days, just as I did, and are now parents and grandparents.
Kristel Van Seters
You asked me, Kristel, whether it was wrong for Elijah to mock the prophets of Baal. We would probably think that it was not the polite thing to do, but we must realize that Elijah was proving to the people that Baal was only a god of wood and stone. He was a messenger of God, standing alone against all those priests of Baal, but the Lord was at His side and would show Himself by sending fire upon the sacrifice.
Many thanks again to all the boys and girls for their answers. It is always good to see that my mistakes are found (when I make them), even in listing the answers to the previous quiz. An old friend pointed out to me that I had shown the wrong text for an answer. How it shows us time and again that we are prone to stumble, but this is also too often true in much more serious matters. Then our prayer must be, “Hold Thou my hand lest I should falter.” May the Lord give us the wisdom we need in all things, but especially in the searching of His Word to find His will and way for us.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
THE GOSPEL PREACHED
A careless, unconverted person was persuaded by a friend to hear the gospel preached. Next day he was asked, “What did you think of the preacher?”
“I did not think anything of him,” was his reply.
Noticing the disappointed and astonished look on his friend’s face, he added with tears in his eyes, “I could not think anything of him. I could only think of the Christ he was lifting up before my eyes.”
