BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

Another crossword puzzle is brought to you this month. Its subject is the eleventh Lord’s Day of the Heidelberg Catechism, which speaks to us about the second part of the Apostles’ Creed. Earlier we noticed that the creed is divided into three parts, the first regarding God the Father, the second about God the Son, and the third about God the Holy Ghost. So this time we are brought to the subject of God the Son, the Savior and Mediator.

This Lord’s Day particularly teaches us about His Name Jesus. We must always remember that His name is much more than just a name. Each of us was given a name at the time we were born, and they too can have nice meanings. Today we sometimes even find persons who have been given the name Jesus. This should not be; it is certain that the Lord Jesus alone can fulfill the true meaning of His Name. He was given this name by the angel, who was the messenger of God. Even though we may have very nice and meaningful names, we must remember and learn to confess that we all have the name “Sinner.” Only the Lord Jesus could say, “Who convinces Me of sin?”

The catechism, based on God’s Word, tells us that Jesus means Savior and that He is the only Savior. There have been others who at times have saved some in a natural way from bodily harm or dangers, but there again we see how much greater the Lord Jesus is. He saves from the guilt and punishment of sin. He gives good things for the bodies and in our lives upon earth, but He also can give that which we need for our souls and for the life to come.

It is also said that many speak about Jesus as a Savior, but either do not need Him for their Savior because of their own goodness or need Him only in part, since they have other saviors. We read that when the disciples were asked by Him, “Will ye also go away?” Peter answered for them, saying, “To whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.”

Boys and girls, it is our wish and prayer that we may learn to rightly know our need for the Savior and may be among those who learn to seek Him. David said to the people long ago, but he says this to us also, “Set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God.” And then the poet tells us, “And all that call on Him in truth, in Him a present helper find.”

Rev. R. M’Cheyne wrote a little poem more than one hundred fifty years ago, which he directed to boys and girls. Two of the verses are as follows:

Like mist on the mountain,
Like ships on the sea,
So swiftly the years
Of our pilgrimage flee;
In the grave of our fathers
How soon we shall lie!
Dear children, today
To a Savior fly.

When Samuel was young.
He first knew the Lord,
He slept in His smile
And rejoiced in His Word:
So most of God’s children
Are early brought nigh:
Oh, seek Him in youth —
To a Savior fly.

Here is the puzzle. Again some of the answers can be found in the texts which are shown in the margin of the catechism in the back of your Psalter. The ones which are taken from those texts are marked with an asterisk (*). Some of these texts might be used several times.

And now the replies to the letters which we received —

John Den Hertog

Your letter is at the top, John, so we will start with you. No, I do not have a fax machine. It certainly would bring your answers here more quickly. The modern means of communication are so amazing, especially when we compare them with those of Bible times. Can you think of some examples of how messages were sent out?

Melinda Van Roekel

It was very nice to hear from you, Melinda, and we welcome you to the Bible quiz. We know of one in the Bible of whom it is said that he knew the Scriptures, the Word of God, from his childhood days. Do you know who that was? We hope we may hear from you again next month.

Derek Kreft

How far is it from your present home to the new house, Derek? If the nice weather stays, construction should move along quite rapidly. Are you assisting them, or does the farm keep you busy? How is Mr. Slingerland? We take our eyes so for granted, but we see again how quickly difficulties can arise. Then too we realize how helpless human help can often be.

Hendrika Boeder

It was nice to hear from you again, Hendrika. We are quite well, and hope the same of you and your family. Health is such a blessing, but then we must also think about Solomon’s wise words that we are to remember our Creator in our healthy days. Is school keeping you quite busy? Perhaps you are looking forward to summer already.

Mary Bosch

We are anxious to hear if that baby “girl” arrived, Mary. Perhaps your brothers would rather have another boy in the family. But we know that the Lord rules over these things. In one of the psalters we sing, “Lo, children are a great reward, a gift from God in very truth.” How necessary it is to be thankful for that which He gives us.

Nick Van Roekel

A welcome also to you, Nick. We are always glad to see new names added to the list. There are many books to read, but we must always remember that the Bible is the best of all books. The psalmist said it was with him every day, and we hope this is also true for you. Do you live on a farm? We look forward to hearing from you again, the Lord willing.

Cindy Kreft

Thanks again for your letter, Cindy. Even though we live far apart, the correspondence and contacts over the years brings us close together. Your math teacher was also one of our correspondents in prior years. As we see young people growing up, we realize that we too are growing older, but it is our wish and prayer that God’s Word may be an important part of our lives in all that we are and do.

Aline Bosch

Did you do well on your Bible doctrine test, Aline? There are so many things to remember when going to school, but young people are able to put many things in their mind’s memory. As we become older, that is no longer so easily done. Solomon in his proverbs was often speaking to young people, pointing out to them what is good to have in their minds and hearts.

Daniel Ceuze

I agree that science is an interesting subject, Daniel. The wonders of nature and the laws of nature are so much a part of our daily life, but we often don’t take time to consider them. What are you studying about in science at the present time? It has been quite a few years ago that I was in school studying science, but I know it is an extensive subject

Many thanks to all the boys and girls for your replies to the quiz. May the Lord give us together that true wisdom which is from above, for the Bible says, “Happy is the man (the boy or girl also) that findeth wisdom.”

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

Not Too Young for God to See

I’m not too young for God to see,
He knows my name and nature, too,
And all day long He looks at me,
And sees my actions through and through.

He listens to the words I say,
And knows the thoughts I have within;
And whether I’m at work or play
He’s sure to see me if I sin.

Oh, how could children tell a lie,
Or cheat in play, or steal, or fight,
If they remembered God was by,
And had them always in His sight?

If some good minister is near,
It makes us careful what we do;
And how much more we ought to fear
The Lord, who sees us through and through.

Then when I want to do amiss,
However pleasant it may be,
Oh, may I always think of this,
I’m not too young for God to see.

“HAPPIER WHEN NOT HAPPY”

A boy, who had been converted some time, and had known something of restoring grace as well as saving grace and keeping grace, on being taunted by a companion as being miserable, replied, “Why, I am happier now when I am not happy, than ever I was before when I was happy!”

The lowest level of Christian life is better than the highest plane of the worldling’s life. “Happy is that people whose God is the Lord” (Psa. 144:15).

A WISE ANSWER

“Where’s hell?”

Unheeding the interruption the preacher went on warning his hearers of the judgment to come.

“Where is hell?” again broke in from the outskirts of the crowd. “I’ve asked you a question, and you can’t answer it.”

“Yes, I can,” replied the preacher, looking the scoffer squarely in the eyes. “Hell lies at the close of a godless and Christ-rejecting life.”

God has decreed that “the wicked shall be turned into hell” (Psa. 9:17). Jesus told of a man who actually went there, and that at the end of a life of self-seeking “in hell he lift up his eyes” (Luke 16:23).

Hell is truth known too late.
