BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

Another month has passed by and it is now the last month of the year. If we were to ask a great number of people what the most important day of December is for them, I am quite certain that many of them would answer, “It is Christmas Day.” Why is that? Is it because the Lord Jesus, whose birth as a child in Bethlehem is remembered on that day, is in the hearts and thoughts and upon the lips of all those people? It is true that many sing of Him in song, as we can hear wherever we go at this time of the year. But the question that comes to all is, “Do we know who He is?”

As we study our Bibles we will find that even while He was upon this earth, from infancy until His death on the cross, many did not look upon Him as the Savior, which is the meaning of His name Jesus. For example, in Bethlehem many thought that He was only another baby, the child of some poor parents who were staying in a stable. The shepherds seem to have been the only ones there who were given to know Him as the Savior. The wise men, by the light given them, came to know Him as King, and they worshipped Him and gave Him gifts. Also during His entire lifetime only a few learned to know Him as the Son of God sent into the world to save sinners.

That is also true today. We too have heard the story of His birth, His suffering, His death, His resurrection, and His ascending into heaven. The gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all tell us of the many miracles which He performed and the many lessons He has taught the people. We hear of it at home, at church, and at school. But have we learned to know Him as the shepherds and the wise men knew Him? Do we know our need of Him? We must ask the Lord to reveal Him in our hearts so that we too may rightly know Him.

In the Word of God we read of the blind man who had been healed by Him. When the Lord Jesus Himself spoke to him about the Son of God, he said, “Who is He, Lord, that I might believe on Him?” He needed spiritual eyes to know Him rightly, and this has also been given to him. Our prayer may also be that of the two blind men by the wayside, who said, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.”

The quiz this month shows us some of the different thoughts that the people of those days had about the Lord Jesus who was walking among them. As you search for the answers, may you be given to see that these same thoughts are with us today. However, the first letters of the answers will spell out what Simeon in the temple saw in Him. May we also be given such light from above in this season of the year.

______ said unto Him, “My Lord and my God.”

When ______ heard of Him, he said, “It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.”

When He was twelve ______ old and went up to Jerusalem, all that heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.

In His own country where He taught in the synagogue, the people said, “Is not this the carpenter’s ______?”

Again there are a number of letters to answer —

Daniel Geuze

You seem to keep quite busy with all your activities, Daniel. Was your school building always used as a school? Congratulations on your birthday. We are late, of course, but we hope that you may have many more. Even more, we pray that our young friends (and older ones) may also have a second birthday. We read of that in John 3.

Cathy Berkenbush

It certainly was nice to receive your letter, Cathy. Do you like school? Yes, it is amazing to see all the varieties of fish which there are. I am sure that the New York Aquarium doesn’t even have all of them. Do you know on which day fish were created? Fish are quite often spoken of in the Bible. Can you think of some examples?

Aline Bosch

Do you like to do your practicing on the organ, Aline? I think most boys and girls would like to be able to play an instrument, but some are not too willing to practice as they should. Open evening at school gives the parents an opportunity to learn, perhaps even to learn some new things. Many things have changed since we were in school, and we are never too old to learn.

Jeremy Bertram

It sounds as if you had a nice time at Daniel’s birthday celebration, Jeremy. Does he have a small stream flowing nearby in order for you to make a dam? In the Bible we can read how the Lord made a dam for the children of Israel. It wasn’t anything like the dam which you made, but as we read of this, we must realize that there is nothing impossible for the Lord.

Jonathan Arnoldussen

We were glad to hear that school is going so well for you this year, Jonathan. There are always so many things to learn about that you will probably find every year to be better than the last one. What are you studying that makes it so interesting? Our Heidelberg Catechism also speaks of some things which are important for us to know. Do you know what they are?

Trevor Aleman

Thanks for the long letter, Trevor. As you study the wonders of creation, which include the human body, then we can realize what little we do know, even though we know much. Our memory and our ability to think and reason are beyond comprehension. But we can so quickly forget Solomon’s instruction, “Remember thy Creator.” Many congregations are providing funds to help students desiring to be teachers, and it certainly is commendable.

Cornelis Paans

We always find it difficult to sleep on an airplane, Cornells, but I guess if it was necessary to travel that long, a person would fall asleep sometime. We have been in Woerden, so we know where that is. You must be getting lots of exercise on the trampoline, or at least getting rid of lots of energy. I don’t think they are for older people.

Gary Vander Waal

It was nice to get your letter, Gary. We haven’t forgotten our stay at your home last summer. We are having rainy weather today, but have also had some nice days recently. Winter weather seems to be coming a little earlier than usual. The Bible tells us that the Lord gives the rain and sends the snow, so we may not complain. Give our greetings to your family.

Karen Bertram

Usually if we want to receive letters, we have to write letters, Karen. We sometimes say that we don’t hear anything from certain persons, but then it’s possible that they are saying the same thing about us. You will be much busier when the twins are able to crawl and then to walk, since then they won’t sit still in one place very long. Are you always a good example for them?

Janeila Arnoldussen

We in the United States don’t have a holiday called Remembrance Day, Janella, but according to my calendar you commemorate it the same day as our Veterans’ Day. I assume it is for the same purpose. The Bible uses the word “remember” quite a few times. We have already mentioned one time in one of the above letters, but there are many more. Can you find some?

Cindy Kreft

We have never been to Edmonton, Cindy, but are there lots of interesting things to see there? Is that the main city in your province? I probably don’t know as much about Canada and its provinces as I should, but you no doubt study Canadian history just as we study United States history. Or perhaps I should be more informed? Give our greetings to your family.

Mary Bosch

Thanks for the details on French knitting, Mary. Your details were very explicit. Were the pictures which you hung for Parents’ Evening those which you and your classmates had drawn? When we think of transport today and what it was in Bible times, we realize what must have been necessary in order to make a journey of any distance. Yet we do read of those who did travel far distances. Think only of the children of Israel.

Irene Verheij

You will notice that your name is spelled correctly now, Irene. We too have daylight savings time during the summer months, but have just recently returned to standard time. I don’t know if it is done everywhere in the world, but certainly has become quite common. We read in the Bible of a city where there shall be no night. Do you know where that is said?

This again concludes our letters. Thanks to all for your answers to the Bible quiz. Boys and girls, how we must be busy with the Word of God while it is day, that is, while we are healthy and of a clear mind, for if we visit old people in nursing homes, then we will often find them no longer able to think clearly about anything. May the Lord grant us to be seekers after Him in our early days, “while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.”

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”
