BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
The Bible tells us of a man to whom the Lord said, “I have given thee a wise and understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.” Perhaps you have already guessed who this man was. He had just been made king, and has asked the Lord for an understanding heart in order to rule the people well and to judge between good and bad. If you have not already guessed it, it was King Solomon. And the Lord did give him that which he requested.
Solomon wrote several books of the Bible, all under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We call this guidance “inspiritation.” The apostle Paul spoke of it in his letter to Timothy, saying, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God.” When we think of Solomon’s wonderful God-given wisdom, how much we should be busy studying those books of the Bible which he wrote. Just as the queen of Sheba was amazed at the wisdom of Solomon, so we too can look with amazement at the wisdom contained in his books.
We will find that he often spoke about the heart—what an important place it has in our lives. Especially when there is much turmoil in the world, important persons, such as presidents, premiers, and kings and queens are often furnished with bodyguards. These are men whose duty it is to surround the person and protect him from dangers. They are to be very alert and watchful as they move through crowds or wherever they might be. A bodyguard who is not alert is of little value to him. Solomon tells us that we must in much the same way protect our heart, for it is also surrounded by many dangers.
What are the dangers which surround the heart? Solomon points them out to us. They are often spoken of as a three-headed enemy—Satan, sin, and the world. Sad to say, our heart, because of our deep fall in Paradise, does not think of them as enemies, but joins them so easily, just as Eve did. Then too, our mouth, our eyes, and our feet are guided by our heart, and work right along with it. That is why Solomon’s words and our Bibles throughout should be so carefully studied.
You may ask, “Can I really protect my heart?” No, we cannot. But the Lord has said, “Give Me thine heart.” In prayer we may make known to the Lord our deep need for His help in doing so. God’s Word can be a guide for us. Also our parents are given us as “bodyguards” expecially in our younger years to direct us in the way that we should go. Do we appreciate and use these means and follow the instruction given?
From what has been said you can see something of the importance of our heart and the care which should be given to it. The quiz this month will also bring other things to your attention about our walk and way of life. May the Lord Himself take us together by heart and by hand to lead us in the way and incline our hearts to fear Him above all else. The first letters of the answers will spell out six words found in Proverbs 4.

Again there are letters to answer this month —
Melanie Kaat
Since your school has the name of Samuel’s memorial, you certainly didn’t have any problem in finding that answer, Melanie. We hope you may think of it often as you go to school from day to day, because we need the Lord’s help every day again. The Bible tells us of a woman who came to the Lord Jesus with the prayer, “Lord, help me.” Do you know that story?
Janella Arnoldussen
Were you glad to be back in school again, Janella? I think most boys and girls are, even though they enjoyed the summer months while they lasted. What are you studying about at school that is especially interesting for you? Everything should be interesting, but I’m sure there will be certain subjects which you especially like. Give our greetings to your Oma.
Jeremy Bertram
Your uncle and aunt saw a lot of different things in their travels, Jeremy. We have never seen the queen’s throne, so didn’t know how hard it was, but we can imagine that her task is not an easy one in any respect. I don’t suppose she has much time to just sit down on her throne.
Aline Bosch
How far is it to Greytown from your house, Aline? It is always nice when grandmothers are not too far away. Have you taken organ lessons for some time already? You couldn’t take your organ to school for hobby day, so what did you do about that? Or do they also have an organ at your school? There must have been quite a few different hobbies to talk about that day.
Suzanne Van Den Bosch
We were sorry to hear that your grandfather in the Netherlands had died, Suzanne. Had you ever visited him in Holland? It is a calling to each of us that we do not live here forever. Whether we are young or old, we must ask the Lord, as did the psalmist, to show us how frail we are and how short our life is.
Cornelis Paans
How long does it take to get to the Netherlands from New Zealand, Cornelis? We think it is quite a long trip from here, but you have to travel much farther. In what part of Holland do your relatives live? You must have had a lot of rain to give you a day off from school. Flooding is always a reminder of the flood in the days of Noah.
Kristy Van Tilburg
Our sympathy, Kristy, to you and your family. We read in the Bible of Job that his sons and daughters were all taken away by the Lord in one day. His eyes were directed upward, and he was enabled to say, “The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” We wish this for you also in these sad days. (Kristy’s little brother was killed in an accident.)
Karen Bertram
Do you have a lot of hills where you live, Karen? We find places where the land is very flat and level, and then again places where there are rolling hills and high mountains. They are all to the praise of the Lord, the Creator of all. In one of the Psalms, the psalmist said several times, “Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men.” Do you know which Psalm that is?
Cindy Kreft
We did travel to the West this summer, Cindy, but didn’t get very close to your area. It would be nice to see you and your family again. You are probably becoming quite proficient on the violin. In the Bible we also read of instruments of music, and also of stringed instruments. The psalmist also called upon us to use them to His honor. We hope that you may do so.
Mary Bosch
I don’t really know what French knitting is, Mary, so perhaps you will have to explain it. Is it done with knitting needles? What have you made with your knitting? Years ago learning to knit was quite common, but it probably isn’t done as much today as it was then. The word “knit” is found several times in the Bible, so it must have been done also in those days.
This again finishes our letters for this months. Many thanks, young people, for your replies to the quiz. May we continue to search God’s Word for the instruction He has placed in it, asking the Lord to apply it within our hearts. The Lord willing, we hope to meet again next month.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

A GREAT CHANGE
One day a notorious drunkard said: “I am going to hear Rev. Wilson,” with no other intention than to scoff at this godly man. But under Rev. Wilson’s prayer, this drunkard’s heart began to melt, and when the minister read his text: “Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee” (Jn. 5:14), he began to weep bitterly. In that sermon the Lord changed this drunkard’s heart. He was such an enemy that Rev. Wilson was afraid to pass his house when going to church, but from an enemy he had become a friend.

THE HEART’S BURDEN
One Sabbath morning I read to Emma the first part of Pilgrim’s Progress. She listened with deep attention. The burden on Christian’s back greatly interested her. And as if a similar experience of her own were gradually coming to life, she sighed, “Poor, poor Christian, how heavy it must have been!”
Later, when I had gone to my room, she came to me with a look which I
cannot describe, her whole soul seeming to look out of her eyes as she asked, “Mother, is there any burden on my back? Is there any on yours and on father’s?” I replied by asking, “Did you ever feel one?” “Oh mother, I do not know; but is there?” “Yes, my child, we have each one a burden,” I replied, “the little child as well as the father and the mother. You know dear, what the burden is, do you not?” She looked up wistfully. “Is it sin?” she asked.
Yes, it is sin. Children, have you ever felt a burden on your heart? Do you not sometimes experience pain and anxiety which you cannot explain? When the little tasks are done, and lessons learned, and there is nothing more to do but play, do you not sometimes feel this dull, aching sense of something wrong? When Sabbath evening comes, and you are in bed and all is still and as you lie thinking, do you not feel it? Is it not the burden of sin? Sin is the heavy burden which many a child’s heart and many older persons’ hearts have unless the Lord Jesus takes it away.
No one could take it from Christian’s back until he came to the cross, and there it rolled away. There is no other way for us either.
YOU TELL ON YOURSELF
You tell on yourself
By the words you speak, by the friends you seek,
By the way you employ your leisure time
By the use you make of your dollar and dime;
You tell what you are by the things you wear
By the spirit you, your burdens bear,
By the kind of things at which you laugh,
By the songs you sing, just a paragraph
You tell what you are by the way you walk
By the things of which you delight to talk,
By the manner in which you bear defeat,
By so simple a thing as the way you eat,
By the books you choose from the well-filled shelf,
In these things and more—you tell on yourself.
