CURATORIUM ANNOUNCEMENT

The Curatorium hopes to meet on June 25, 1991, at 9 A.M. in Crand Rapids, Michigan, the Lord willing, with those who may have received a consistorial attest with respect to either a ministerial or a ministerial-missionary calling. Any male member of our denomination who feels the Lord has called him to the office of minister or missionary, should contact his consistory. Upon such a request, the consistories of vacant churches should notify their moderator for counsel prior to granting attestation. The consistory who grants a consistorial attest should forward it to the clerk of the Curatorium prior to May 15, 1991.

Rev. John den Hoed
824 18th Avenue S
Rock Valley, Iowa 51247

A list of questions will then be sent to the consistory for completion. May the Lord gladden us with His deeds in 1991 by sending unto His vineyard those who in time to come may stand as watchmen upon the walls of Zion. May He graciously remember the many vacant congregations, give unto the office-bearers courage and steadfastness in His Word. May He bind all of us unto His Word and give that this Word may be fruitful in our midst, to the glory of His holy Name and the salvation of lost sinners.

May the Lord remember him, his wife, and his family in this time of need, confirming for his soul Psalm 138:8, “The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: Thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of Thine own hands.” Then all shall be well for time and eternity. —JRB

“THE SEED OF HIS SERVANTS”

We are grateful and humbled to have been blessed with the birth of a son, Calvin James, on February 2. It is our prayer that he may have been born to be born again. May the Lord fulfil His Word in Psalm 69:35-36, “For God will save Zion… The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love His Name shall dweil therein.”

We wish to thank those who have remembered us in prayer and with tokens of kindness.
—Rev. and Mrs. Beeke

SORROW IN MISSION FAMILY

As this issue was going to press, we received the sad news that the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Henk Looijen, mission workers in Nipsan, Irian Jaya, was killed in a car accident in the Netherlands. He was sixteen years old. The Looijen’s also have one daughter. May the Lord sustain them in their grief and grant us prayer on their behalf. Above all, may we learn to observe the brevity and frailty of life, and make haste for our life’s sake in light of eternity.

CURRENT EVENTS

ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED

National Endowment for the Arts Fully Funded Again, Without Restrictions

In an overwhelming vote of support, Congress has authorized an increase in funding for the NEA, without any restrictions imposed regarding the content of projects funded by the Endowment. Doubtless you have heard of projects such as a crucifix being submerged in urine, or Christ being depicted as a drug user, etc. Since funding to the NEA is appropriated annualfy, consider voicing your disapproval to your Representative and Senators. Representatives may state they supported the Coleman-Williams Amendment, which gives the courts the responsibility for ensuring that obscene projects do not get federal funding. However, the courts use the Miller standards which say that nothing “with artistic merit” can be obscene. Advocate, rather, that your elected official support something like the Rohrabacker or Crane amendments. The first of these prohibits certain types of objectionable projects from funding and the latter would have taken the NEA off the federal budget, forcing artists to depend on the merit of their work.

Update on RU 486

Citizen reported in its January 21 issue that the California Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Feminist Majority Foundation, Planned Parenthood, and an editorial in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine all have endorsed the testing and use of the abortion pill RU 486 in the United States. The French manufacturer, Roussel Uclaf, and its parent company in Germany, Hoechst A.G., are sensitive to pro-life pressure against the drug’s introduction in the U.S., but are continuing to actively market it in Europe. The companies hope that increased acceptance elsewhere will soften American resistance. Concerned readers can contact Dr. Louis Sullivan, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, 200 Independence Ave., S.W., Washington, D.C. 20410 and voice their opposition to the testing of any abortifacient, including RU 486.

Scientific American Discriminates Against Prospective Columnist

Science writer and inventor Forest M. Mims III received an offer to be the new author of The Amateur Scientist” column in the Scientific American magazine. He has written over 70 books and more than 500 magazine articles, as well as inventing award-winning devices of various kinds. It appeared that the editor, Jonathan Piel, was greatly impressed with Mims until he found out that Mims does not accept the Darwinian theory of evolution, is a fundamentalist Christian, and believes in the sanctity of unborn life. Even though he agreed not to use the column for expressing his personal views, the magazine refused him employment A sad ending to the story, reported in Citizen’s January issue, was that Mims said he received much more support and expressed outrage against the magazine by evolutionists, pro-abortionists, many secular scientists, and groups like the ACLU, than from Christians. To express your concern about yet another example of blatant discrimination against Christian values, consider writing: Claus G. Firchow, President, Scientific American, 415 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10017. An organization that has been very active in combating the erosion of religious freedom, especially those of Christian individuals, churches, schools, and other organizations, is the Rutherford Institute, named after the famed 17th century Scots minister, Samuel Rutherford. A request for information from, or support to this worthy organization can be sent to The Rutherford Institute, P.O. Box 7482, Charlottesville, VA 22906-7482.

INFORMATION

Planned Parenthood Opposes Family Life in Commercial

Furious and irrational, the father screams at his daughter, “I told you to be home at 10 o’clock, not 10:10, not 10:30.” A kindly voice then asks, “If this is what happens when she comes home a few minutes late, what will he do if she tells him she is pregnant?” The father’s voice, more angry than before, says, “I’ll give you something to cry about…” This commercial is aimed against laws requiring parental consent for underage children’s abortions. We feel this kind of advertising speaks for itself. Are your children exposed to presentations by Planned Parenthood in public schools? Please inquire, for their soul’s welfare.

Child Care Bill Passed

Though child care legislation could not be agreed upon for the bulk of the Congressional year, an agreement was reached with President Bush to allow a child care bill to pass, attaching it to the “Budget Reconciliation Bill” (HR 5835). Though the President tried hard to remove several “objectionable” components, some still remain which discriminate against traditional families and do not protect church day care centers from costly court battles. Details will be forthcoming when available.

NBPTS Rejected

Efforts to fund the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, incorporated as part of the Excellence in Education Bill, have failed due to the steadfastness of a few senators. As detailed in the July 1990 Banner current events section, this board would likely have advocated stringent regulation of private and home schools.

Soviet Television Asking for Christian Broadcasting

Soviet officials have asked a Christian broadcasting network to put together a program describing the historical and biblical aspects of the birth of Christ, as will as desiring more general Christian programming. Reportedly, the Soviets have said something like, “We need a message of peace, of hope, something that will comfort the people. If you Christians can do it, do it.” We are discouraged to think, however, that the message they might hear or see, sterns from a false or deceptive doctrine. May the Lord bring life to that vast harvest of souls. May means be pursued to bring the truth to those that sit in darkness.

Nancy Cruzan Dies

On December 26, twelve days after her feeding tube was disconnected, Nancy Cruzan died of starvation. Thus ends the long euthanasia case led all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled last year that a person cannot have their life support sustenance denied without clear prior approval. Meanwhile, a Missouri judge ruled on Dec. 14 that the parents could remove the life support means. It was documented that before her death, Nancy showed she was aware of her surroundings, could see and hear, smiled at amusing stories, and wept when visitors left her bedside. We shudder to think how a case like this will encourage numerous cases of euthanasia against the aged or incapacitated in this country.
