BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
Again we have started a new year together. It is at this time of the year that we hear the greetings, “We wish you many blessings in the New Year.” The many blessings of the past year are behind us, but we need blessings again this year as we look to the future.
What really are “blessings”? In looking up the word in the dictionary, I found the definition, “the granting of divine favor.” A good definition! Blessings come from the Lord! As we look at the many blessings we have received, we may sometimes forget from whom they come. Perhaps there are times when you say, “This I have received from my parents or my grandparents.” But all that we receive comes to us by way of God-given means. Our parents and our grandparents are also given to us by the Lord. When Moses was saying “Farewell” to the children of Israel, as told to us in the book of Deuteronomy, he mentioned a list of blessings which would be given them if they were obedient to the Lord’s commandments and walked in His ways. You will find these blessings listed in the first fourteen verses of the twenty-eighth chapter of Deuteronomy. Many different blessings are mentioned there. Also all that we ask of the Lord in our prayers are blessings if we may receive them, because we do not deserve them.
There are certain things which we might look at as blessings, but are not always found to be so. In the book of Proverbs Agur prayed, “Give me neither poverty nor riches.” He saw the danger in possessing riches and did not think they would be a blessing for him. The reason he gave was that in having riches he would soon deny the Lord and have no need of Him in his life. Isn’t this often true of those who are rich? But neither did he desire poverty, for then he would be tempted to steal and to cause offense to God’s Name.
We can speak of outward, natural blessings, such as food and drink, health and family, etc., but also of spiritual blessings. Which do you think are the most valuable? When the man sick of the palsy was brought before the Lord Jesus, it was said unto him, “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.” Afterward the Lord Jesus said, “Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.” The first blessing was certainly the greater of the two. The whole world is not to be compared to the value of one soul. In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, who had the greater blessings in his life?
May we together learn to pray as Jabez did. He said, “Oh that Thou wouldest bless me indeed.” He asked the Lord to grant him that blessing which the Lord thought best for him, and he believed that those whom the Lord blesses indeed are truly blessed. May we too receive such a blessing in this new year.

Again there are letters to answer —
Marc Slingerland
I am certain you have seen quite a lot of snow by this time, Marc. Snow is not always welcomed by everyone, but it serves the purpose for which the Lord has designed it. If I am not mistaken, a winter without snow makes things difficult for farmers. The Bible says, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose.”
Hendrika Boeder
Mistakes happen time and again, Hendrika, no matter how hard we try to make things perfect. In Psalm 19 we read of something that is perfect. Do you know what it is? The Bible
also mentions more that is perfect. Perhaps you can find them also.
Sharlene Den Hoed
It is always nice to receive letters, Sharlene, and we do look forward to them. Sometimes we put off writing a letter because we are busy and have so many other things to do, but usually we can make someone happy with a letter. Grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends all look forward to letters.
Rebecca Perales
Rebecca, how nice it was to hear from you. We are happy to have you join in answering the quiz. As we study our Bibles, we find there is so much to be learned, even when we become old. It tells us that the Word of God is a perfect guide for young and old. How are you doing in school?
Charmain Huisman
How is your grandfather now, Charmain? We hope that he is feeling better. In the Bible we read of many different sicknesses and of many sick ones. We can see how that sickness has come into the world after the fall in Paradise, since there was no sickness at the beginning. But we also read of Him who is able to heal all diseases.
Suzanne Van Den Bosch
How many baby calves were there, Suzanne? In this we can also see the wisdom of the Lord in creation. It was nice to hear that you did so well on your Bible Doctrine test. I suppose that now you are getting ready for your summer holidays.
Mary Bosch
Mary, do you think that we would be different than the Isrealites were who were tired of eating manna? We too can be unhappy with that which the Lord gives us in our lives, even though it is for our good. Just as you wrote, we must pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” but we are not always satisfied with what is given us.
Jonathan & Janella Arnoldussen
Did your Christmas program go well? We always find it enjoyable to hear the boys and girls tell what they have learned from the Word of God. The wonders of the Lord which are told to us in His Word show us what He is even today. We may ask Him to do a wonder in our heart also.
Gerald & Corrie Den Hoed
The name Cornelia is a familiar name for us. My grandmother’s name was Cornelia, my mother’s name is Cornelia, and I had a sister Cornelia who passed away some years ago. She was also called Corrie. Names were necessary from the very beginning, but in the Bible we read of a name which is above every name. Do you know what it is?
John Erkelens
Welcome to the Bible quiz, John. Yes, Norwich is quite small, but we are always amazed at how large the congregation and the school have become in such a small place. When we look back at the very small beginning many years ago, then we must say, “The Lord has done great things,” also in Norwich.
Trina Huisman
Our congratulations on your birthday, Trina. When I am writing this, it has not yet arrived, but you will be receiving this too late for your birthday. However, we hope that you may be blessed with many more, but also with a second birthday. We read about that second birthday in John 3.
Karin Bertram
Did your aunt arrive safely, Karin? How long will she be staying with you? Usually those visits seem to pass by so quickly and it is soon time to go home again. How far do you live from the airport at which she arrives? It must be a long and tiring trip for her, since she must travel almost half-way around the world.
Elizabeth Den Hoed
What a nice long letter, Elizabeth. Our twelve-inch snowfall has also almost all disappeared, but they are predicting more later today. What did you name your puppy? My daughter has a dark brown dachshund, whose name is Apple. He is already quite old. When others our age are seriously sick, we are also reminded that death can be near at hand.
Aline Bosch
You had our mistake figured out correctly, Aline. I gave the answer and then left the next word as a blank. How does your uncle like it in this country? Travelling is much easier than it was in Bible times, but it is not always nice to be separated so far from relatives and friends.
Sheila Den Hoed
We are quite well, Sheila. Car accidents are so unexpected, but can be so tragic, bringing lives to an end and sorrow into many homes. It leaves an impression behind for a while, but too often this fades away, and it is soon forgotten by many. It was the prayer of Moses and should also be our prayer, “Teach us to number our days.”
Cynthia Huisman
We have been hearing of all the rain you are having in your part of the country, Cynthia. A mass of water can carry away everything in its path, things which we would think were immovable by mere water. God’s Word shows us clearly that the rain, but also the lack of rain, are under His control.
Joanne Norduyn
Thank you for the picture and poem, Joanne. Even today there is no room for the Lord Jesus, unless room is made by the Holy Spirit. It must be a wonder to us that He has never said, “There is no room for sinners by Me,” but He calls also boys and girls, “Come unto Me.”
This finishes our letters for this month, but also for the year 1990. The Lord has spared us together, and may we humbly beg His blessing further as we enter another year. We wish again for all of you and your families the Lord’s richest blessings in the new year, and we pray that we may be brought together month after month around His precious Word.
With love,
Your friend, “Uncle Garret”
