BIBLE QUIZ

9 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

This month we again have a crossword puzzle for you based upon the Heidelberg Catechism. In December we had one based on the second Lord's Day, which spoke to us about our misery, and therefore this month the quiz will be about the third Lord's Day, which tells us what caused these miseries.

Perhaps some of you wonder what these miseries really are. In a small catechism booklet I found the following answers to this question, and thought it might be helpful to show you what is said about misery.

Q. What are the miseries which the fall brought upon us?

A. They are of three kinds: temporal, spiritual, and eternal.

Q. What are the temporal miseries?

A. They are the troubles and afflictions of the body, such as famine, wars, pestilence, poverty, reproach, sickness, and the pains of death at last.

Q. What are the spiritual miseries we are liable to by the fall?

A. They are the plagues and diseases of the soul, such as the loss of God's image and communion with Him, blindness of mind, hardness of heart, searedness of conscience, weakness of memory, and the like.

Q. What are the eternal miseries we are liable unto?

A. The pains of hell hereafter, which never have an end.

God's Word and the catechism tell us so plainly that our sinfulness and miseries are the result of the fall in Paradise. It opened, as it were, the door for them, and since that time misery has been the portion of each person born in this world. God did not create us in this way, but we have brought it upon ourselves through our first parents, Adam and Eve.

We will see this more clearly as we search out the answers to the quiz this month. Most of the texts shown in the margin alongside this Lord's Day in the back of your Psalter have been used. Where the answer is found in one of these texts, you will find the question marked with an asterisk, which gives you quite a few clues.

Garret J. Moerdyk serves as elder in the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

May the lesson taught us here in this part of the catechism be made plain to us by the Lord Himself, so that we might learn to know our deep need as sinners before Him.

Again there are letters to answer:

Aline Bosch

There are two letters from you, Aline, so your letter will be the first one. You really found quite a few texts in the Bible about winter and summer. Thank you for your chart on creation. It shows very clearly what took place on each day of that first week.

Derek Kreft

It was interesting to hear that Rasco and Scruffy were getting along so well together, Derek. They can often be an example for us. The Word of God quite often uses the animals as lessons for us. Even the ants are pointed out to us by Solomon in order to learn from them. Have you ever watched ants as they worked together in the summer?

Suzanne Van Den Bosch

Suzanne, usually the names are one month behind when they appear in the Banner of Truth. This is because of the mailing time and also the printing time necessary. We try hard notto miss anyone, but that can also happen. Your answers were really nicely done, and we hope we may hear from you again next month.

Janice Phillips

We are always glad to hear that boys and girls enjoy the Bible quizzes, Janice. It is a way to learn to know your Bibles well, and we pray that the Lord may bless these studies to young hearts. Many years ago I was also sending in my answers for the Bible quizzes which then appeared in the Banner of Truth.

Cindy Kreft

We were also saddened when we heard about your minister, Cindy. We hope and pray that the Lord may send others to take the places of those who no longer are able to bring God's Word to us. I have a grandson who is also learning to play the violin. It doesn't look that easy to me. How are all your younger brothers doing?

Many thanks again, boys and girls, for your replies to the quiz again this month. The school year will soon be over for many of you, and we look forward to the summer months. But the need of God's Word and His instruction by means of it continues. May we often pray for it, asking Him to teach us those things which are so necessary and important. We look forward to hearing from all of you again next month. With love,

Your friend,

"Uncle Garret"
