TRANSLATION OF DUTCH WORKS
Dear Friends,
We wish to explain in some detail the decision of Classis East on April 12, 1989 to request additional funds for the translation of major Dutch writings (see page 136). Especially our Dutch-speaking readers know that the wealth of written material produced by the divines of the Nadere Reformatie (the Second Reformation) is largely unavailable to the majority of our membership, which is no longer conversant with the Dutch language.
It has long been the desire of past synods, as well as our denominational book committee and our theological school to publish quality translations of the major writings of Dutch divines such as Comrie, Brakel, Vander Groe, etc. Since the translation of such a major work is a demanding and time-consuming undertaking, and requires mastery of both the Dutch and English languages, such a task has not been undertaken to date.
However, recent developments have presented us with an opportunity to undertake this task. As you know, Evangelist B. Elshout has been granted a leave of absence for one year by the Mission Board. Due to his qualifications (he has full command of both the Dutch and the English languages, as well as the Biblical and theological terminology used in both), it is our desire to utilize him during this period in pursuing a major translation
The works which are currently under consideration for translation are the following:
1. Alexander Comrie: Be Eigenschappen des Zaligmakenden Geloofs (The Properties or Distinctives of Saving Faith);
2. Wilhemus à Brákel: De Redelijke Godsdienst (.Reasonable Religion, which is the equivalent of a systematic theology or body of divinity);
3. A collection of writings of major Dutch divines representing the "Nadere Reformatie"; each of which would be prefaced with a biographical sketch.
Since availability of such a translation would be of great and lasting importance for our theological school in particular and our congregations in general, we hereby urge our congregations to take an extra collection for the Book Publishing Fund in the coming months. We would also encourage individuals to make donations. May many also support this worthy endeavor in prayer asking that divine blessing may rest upon these efforts to the welfare of our denomination
On behalf of the Theological School, On behalf of the Netherlands Reformed Book and Publishing Committee,
Rev. C. Vogelaar, theological instructor Rev. J.R. Beeke, president
Rev. J. Den Hoed, clerk of Curatorium Rev. J. Spaans, vice-president
Forward all collections and/or donations to:
