CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS
CURATORIUM MEETING (Final Announcement)
The Curatorium hopes to meet on June 27, 1989, at 9:00 A.M. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Lord willing, with those who may have received a consistorial attest with respect to either: 1) a ministerial, or 2) a ministerial missionary calling — meaning that any male member of our denomination who may believe that the Lord has converted him and feels called to the ministry of God’s Word as pastor or missionary at this time, should contact his respective consistory. Having received such a request, consistories of vacant churches should notify their moderator for his counsel prior to granting attestation.
In turn, the consistory(ies) which grant a consistorial attest should forward it to the clerk of the Curatorium prior to May 15:
Rev. John Den Hoed
824 18th Avenue, S.
Rock Valley, Iowa 51247 A list of questions will then be sent to the consistory(ies) involved for completion.
May the Lord’s blessing rest upon this announcement, that men prepared and called from above may be sent forth to labor in God’s vineyard, to His honor and glory, and that our denomination may be gladdened by the deeds of the Lord.
Dear friends, that the Lord Himself may bind the needs of our denomination upon your hearts. —JDH

CURRENT EVENTS
HEALTH ISSUES
U.S. Ranks Behind Third-World Countries in Life Expectancy?
The National Review reported last year that official life expectancy statistics can be misleading. If death by abortion, which is currently not figured into the statistics, was included, life expectancy would drop from over sixty years for a baby conceived in 1972 to under fifty-two years for 1982. This is well below the 1982 figures for Kenya, Peru, and Mongolia.
AIDS
The January 16 New American reports that the disease AIDS is now the ninth leading cause of death among children aged one to four years and the seventh leading cause of death in young people between ages 15–24. If present trends continue, AIDS can be expected to move into the top five leading causes of death in three to five years.
American Medical Association Suggests Link Between Prayer and Healing
In a recent AMA journal article, researchers have seen enough of a link between prayer and enhanced recovery in heart patients undergoing treatment that a more in-depth study into the effects of prayer was suggested. Doctors have reported in the journal that patients recovering from heart surgery have experienced fewer complications when someone was known to have been praying for them. Even a casual reader of the Bible would be aware of several examples where the Lord gave and answered prayer in matters of bodily health. Perhaps now, the secular scientist is “enlightened” enough to come to the acknowledgement that God really does enter into the daily affairs of humans. It is indeed sad that a “study” has to be done to show a relationship between prayer and the effects of it. That is almost the same as if one undertook a study to see if God really exists.
GOVERNMENT
Dangers in Trusting an Atheistic Government
The Feb. 13 New American reports that the Reagan Administration released its final Report to Congress on Soviet Noncompliance with Arms Control Agreements. In addition to bringing up the numerous past violations previously documented in such reports, the Soviet Union was charged with violating the justratified Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, better known as the INF treaty. Without going into technical details, it seems the Soviets are not only doing that which violates the treaty conditions but are hindering the U.S. from monitoring some of the very items the treaty deals with.
May we, and especially our leaders, be ever vigilant to stand up for what is right and be wary of those who have developed a reputation for deceit. As a nation let us be especially reluctant to snatch at all appearances of good will and automatically assume them genuine. All of this should deepen our felt need for prayer that we be kept from crying, “Peace, peace” when there is no peace. Scripture admonishes us to put our trust in the Lord and not in princes.
PORNOGRAPHY
Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act Passed
In the dramatic final moments of the 100th Congress, the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act finally passed. Despite great opposition in the House and Senate Judiciary committees, which kept the bill bottled up in committee for months, the bill passed just minutes before midnight on the last day of the now past session. In fact, under God, the thanks can be given to two senators and five congressmen. Minutes before adjournment, only four senators remained on the floor, the others having already gone home, and the final measure was passed by voice vote (a quorum not being required in this instance)! The bill was weakened in its final form in order to keep it “alive,” but still the legislation will help prosecutors turn obscenity cases into felony prosecutions. May God be remembered in this encouragement.
RELIGION
Bibles Allowed in the Soviet Union
The January Focus on the Family magazine reported that the Soviet government is allowing shipments of Bibles to the U.S.S.R. as part of the commemoration of the 1,000-year anniversary celebration of the Christian Church in Russia. Although exact provisions of this agreement were not available at the time of this writing, the shipments will take place over at least the next fifteen months. May the Lord bless the means to the conversion of many, including those of the Soviet bureaucracy.
Church Giving Declining
In a recent study by an independent religious research group, Protestants, on the whole, are giving 2.79% of their income to the church as compared with a 1968 3.05% figure. Roman Catholics gave 1.5% in 1984 as compared with 3.4% in 1963. Are we also guilty of such a decline, when the Bible shows that the Old Testament Jews gave a bare minimum of 10% (tithes) and more in offerings? May we who profess that the gold and silver are His, also render to Him what is meet, even financially. “The Lord loveth a cheerful giver.”
Attacks on Religion/The Bible Continue Under”Establishment Clause” Guise
On Jan. 13th, the California State Board of Education adopted a policy which essentially states that religion has no place in science classes and unanimously ruled that creationism is to be expelled from the science curricula. This is especially significant since California, because of its large number of state schools, has a strong influence on the major textbook publishers. Since 1972, the state permitted the teaching of creationism and evolution “side by side,” though weight was given to evolution as “more scientific” and publishers had responded to accommodate such a policy. Now it seems that trend will be reversed.
A Colorado U.S. District Court upheld a principal’s order requiring a teacher to remove his Bible from his desk and two religious-oriented books from the 239-book classroom library. The judge ruled that the “impressionable” students had the “right to be free from religious influence or indoctrination in the classroom.” The court further banned the teacher’s reading of the Bible during a daily 15-minute silent reading time. The judge ruled that in seeing their teacher read the Bible, the students might be influenced to read it themselves! Influencing students that way would violate the so-called Establishment Clause. The court did order the Bible returned to the library since it was considered a “major work of literature, history ethics, theology and philosophy.” It has a legitimate, if not necessary place in the American public schools. Thus the court has essentially determined that students have a “right” to be free from God. One could scarcely tell today that our country was founded on biblical principles and that the teaching of the Bible was the center of almost every school curriculum at that time. “Lord, return us to Thee. Visit us with a revival and not with a well-deserved judgment.”
