BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

In Isaiah 45 the Lord says a number of times, “I am God, and there is none else.” When we read our Bibles, we find that the people of those days did not pay a great deal of attention to this, for how often even the children of Israel tried to serve other gods. The gods of the heathen nations seemed to be far more attractive to them. These gods did not call them to a holy life; in other words, they thought they had much more freedom to do what their hearts desired to do.

However, time and again we may also see how even the heathens had to confess that the God of Israel was the great God, the God of wonders and great power. We only need to think of the kings which are spoken of in the book of Daniel. Yet these confessions were usually only for that moment, and then they turned away from Him again.

Do we do differently? Where is the respect and reverence due unto Him? There is much respect shown to men of importance, such as presidents, premiers, kings and queens, governors, judges, etc. God, who rules over us and all peoples, should be shown greater reverence and love. Does He not give blessings to us, our families, and our nations, even though we sin against Him daily? But where is the reverence? His house is neglected; His day and Name, dishonored; His laws, disobeyed; His Word is scorned. Of many it must be said that they live as if there is no God.

What do we do? Is it different with us? Perhaps some would say, “Oh yes, it is different with me. I attend church faithfully; I observe His day strictly; I study His word; I pray,… I am not like those people whom you have mentioned.” Where have we heard that expression before? Was it not the Pharisee in the temple who prayed, “God, I thank Thee that I am not as other men are”?

Garret J. Moerdyk serves as elder in

the Netherlands Reformed Congregation

of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

This is not to suggest that our church attendance, our Bible study, our praying, should be neglected, but may we be given to see that these too must be washed in the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. May we together need Him more and more, realizing that He is the way thought, wrought, and taught by the Triune God for our eternal good. Let us not turn away, but pray to be led by His hand in the way of life —nothing in ourselves, but all praise and honor to Him alone.

Again we have some letters to answer:

John Den Hertog

Your letter is on top today, John, so your letter is the first one. How is little Andrew? It certainly is a blessing to receive a healthy baby in the family. My wife does help me with the mail, and my daughter makes crossword puzzles for me, so I do have some help.

Cindy Kreft

Do you know some Dutch already, Cindy? You will really have to do some practicing before next summer if you are going to Holland, D.V. Have you dissected the chickens at school? We may see the wisdom of the Creator when we see the wonderful formation of His creatures.

Krista Maljaars

We are quite well, Krista. It was certainly nice to hear from you. My grandson is also learning to play the violin. Do you like to practice? That is what is necesssary in order to play an instrument well. We also read of several kinds of musical instruments in the Bible. Do you know some of them?

Estella Schouten

Do you have a large garden, Estella? Sometimes the weeds grow faster than the things which we have planted. The word “weeds” only appears once in the Bible, but we do read more often of tares and of thistles. Can you find where “weeds” are mentioned?

Aline Bosch

I don’t think that I know Ruth-ann, Aline. Was she paying you a visit? She certainly had to travel a long distance from her home to you. Tell your mother we very much appreciated her note. When you wrote, you were not feeling well, but we hope that you were soon better again.

Brian Den Hertog

Are you helping to take care of your little brother, Brian? The name Andrew is also found in the Bible. Do you know who that Andrew was? We hope that your little brother, but also you, may learn to walk in the footsteps of that Andrew.

Derek Kreft

Are you training your new puppy to be an obedient dog, Derek? Dogs need training, just like boys and girls do, but sometimes it takes much work to do so. What does your old dog think about the new arrival? Give our greetings to your parents and brothers.

Philip Schouten

The break in the school year during the summer months is always looked to with anticipation, Philip. It was that way when I went to school, and this has not changed. What are you doing during these months? Can you find lots of things with which to be occupied? How is your father? Give him our regards.

lanice Phillips

How are you doing in your memorization of Psalm 119, Janice? We looked up the texts you had marked down. They both speak to us of the good use of the Word of God, keeping from sin and guiding us in the way that we should go. We hope and pray that it may serve this purpose for all of our young friends.

lorica Aleman

We were glad to hear from you, Jorica, and to have you join in answering the Bible quiz. Just as at school, there is so much to learn from the Bible, and we must continue learning our whole lifetime. What kind of clubs do you have at school?

Ronnie Krul

Congratulations with the new little sister, Ronnie. Yes, I do remember being at your home when you were just a baby. How fast the time goes by! At the end of the year we must look back upon the many blessings which the Lord has given us, but as we begin a new year, must also ask for His protecting care and further blessings.

Brent Aleman

You certainly did have cold weather already, Brent. It is also sent by the Lord, as we can read in Psalm 147. We are not always so satisfied with what the Lord gives, are we? Have you played the violin for a long time already?

Trevor W. Aleman

It must be that you are not an enthusiastic bean-picker, Trevor. But in whatever we do, Solomon gives us good instruction, saying, “Do it with thy might.” We have not had that much snow this winter, but this can change so quickly.

Many thanks to all for your replies to the quiz. The many wishes for Christmas and the New Year were also greatly appreciated. May the Lord Himself fulfil the wishes and that we together may be glad in His doings. The poet sang, “The Lord is right in all His ways,” and may we also acknowledge this time and time again. Hoping to again hear from all of you.

With love,

Your friend, “Uncle Garret”

WRESTLING PRAYER
In themselves as weak as worms,
How can poor believers stand,
When temptations, foes and storms,
Press them close on every hand?

Weak, indeed, they feel they are,
But they know the throne of grace;
And the God who answers prayer,
Helps them when they seek His face.

Wrestling prayer can wonders do;
Bring relief in deepest straits!
Prayer can force a passage through
Iron bars and brazen gates.

DOUBLE GUARD YOUR WEAK POINTS

A general, who had led his army on a long and tedious journey through a wilderness, was about to encamp them for one night when he received word that the enemy was planning to attack him at a certain point.

“Double guard that point to-night,” was his order.

Look over the week, month, year, or any special work, and learn the lesson: “Be sober, be vigilant; because [of] your adversary the devil” (1 Peter 5:8; 2 Tim. 2:22).

THE REASON WHY

The renowned George Whitefield had preached so many times from the text, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7), that one of his congregation said to him, “Why do you preach so long from one text?”

He quickly answered, “Because ye must be born again.”

RESTING ON CERTAINTIES

Faraday, the famous chemist, a man of giant intellect, was asked as he neared the waters of death, “What are your speculations now?”

“Speculations I have none. I am resting on certainties,” he replied, and then quoted, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day” (2 Tim. 1:12).

Can you, by grace, say the same now?

HOW TO PROVE DREAMS

A man once applied to be admitted at Surrey Chapel, and stated that his conversion originated in a dream. “Well, that may be,” said Mr. Hill, “but we’ll tell you what we think of your dreams, when we have seen how you walk now you are awake.”

“Not every one that sayeth… but he that doeth” (Matt. 7:21). “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matt. 7:20).

MIXED WITH MUSK

There is in the East a mosque with the mortar of which musk was used; and although centuries have passed since it was built, a rich odor is still given out when the sun shines on the building.

The Church of Christ is built up with a still sweeter perfume, even with love (Eph. 4:16); and while in the night there are traces of the precious odor, when the Sun rises in His strength, heaven and earth will be filled with the glory like “ointment poured forth” (S. of S. 1:3).

THE RIGHT KIND OF PREACHING

A careless, unconverted worldling, being persuaded by a friend to go and hear a great gospel preacher, was asked next day: “And what did you think of the preacher?”

“I did not think anything of him,” was the reply.

Then noticing the disappointed and astonished look on his friend’s face, he added, with tears in his eyes: “I could not think anything of him, I could only think of the Christ he was lifting up before our eyes.”

Would to God this attitude might be more cultivated in each of our hearts! The messenger is the scaffolding; the message, the building.

WILL GOD ACCEPT YOU?

A woman in deep distress of soul said, “I am afraid God will never accept me.”

“He never will,” was the unexpected answer.

A look of blank astonishment covered her face.

“He never will,” continued her visitor, “but He has accepted Christ.”

Faith can say, “He hath made us accepted in the Beloved” (Eph. 1:6).

LIFE’S AIM

After the death of _________, a devoted missionary in China, there were found written in large letters in his notebook, “ETERNITY, ETERNITY.”

Would that we all lived in the light of that Eternity in which “every one of us shall give account” (Rom. 14:12)!

NO LAST LOOK FOR SAINTS

A quaint old Christian who had visited a dying man till he passed away was asked by the relatives if he would like to see his friend for the last time before the coffin lid was closed. He answered, “No, I’ll see him again.”

It puzzled them. But God’s people never see each other for the last time (1 Thes. 4:17; 2 Sam. 12:23).
