BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
In Psalter 420 we sing, “Let God be praised with reverence deep; He daily comes our lives to steep in bounties freely given.” Perhaps especially at Thanksgiving we think about the many blessings God grants unto us, but did you notice that in the above verse there is the little word “daily”? Every day again the Lord provides for us in so many ways, or, more correctly, in all ways.
We may sometimes have ways which are not to our liking, and might then think that God is not providing for us. But have we searched His Word for an answer to that? Perhaps we even want to blame God for the troubles and disappointments which we have. God’s Word tells us that troubles come because of sins, but the Lord teaches His people that He controls all things, so that even the troubles can serve a good purpose. Think of Jacob, who once said, “All these things are against me.” Later he may have seen how good the Lord had been to him.
If we may be given to realize that because of our sins we do not deserve good from God’s hand, the wonder becomes even greater that He yet gives blessings unto us. Then the psalter verse above has special meaning for us. May the Lord teach us to praise Him in truth, not only on Thanksgiving Day, but every day in all things.
As we read the Word of God, we will find many examples of those who sang praises unto the Name of the Lord for His goodness, His wisdom, His power, etc. The quiz this month will be about such persons. The first letters will spell out seven words spoken by job at a difficult time in his life.

Again there are a number of letters to
answer—
Benjamin Hayes
Have you ever studied the climates of the world and the reason why the seasons come and go, Benjamin? It can readily be seen how wisely the Lord created and ordered all things for the benefit of man upon the earth, even though we are not always so satisfied with the changes in the weather.
Sherry Both
You certainly wrote a nice long letter, Sherry. It sounds like you had a nice vacation this past summer. Do you enjoy practicing on the organ? We know that there were musical instruments also in Bible times. Can you think of some examples?
Remco Funcke
How is that pet lamb doing, Remco? Do you have a name for it? In the Bible we also read about a man who had one pet lamb. Do you know where in the Bible this is found? That must have been quite a storm you had. It is hard to realize how powerful rushing water can be, unless you see the results.
Alex Klyn
It was nice to hear from you, Alex. Yes, we did make a mistake in that quiz, and quite a few boys and girls brought it to our attention. I suppose your mother told you that she also did the Bible quiz some years ago. It doesn’t seem so long ago. Give your parents our greetings.
Derek Kreft
Here the color of the leaves on the trees are changing rapidly now, and some have also begun to fall, Derek. I think your fall sets in a little earlier than it does in our area. It is certainly a beautiful sight when the sun shines on the trees which have turned a variety of shades of red and yellow.
Julia Neels
How are you getting along in school, Julia? Summer holidays are nice, but school days are quite important. Are you learning lots of new things? The Lord Jesus once said, “Learn of Me,” and He is the only perfect teacher. We pray that He may teach boys and girls in the schools by His Word.
Michelle Boesterd
We were glad to hear from you again, Michelle. When I was in school, our high school was a four-story building, so we were also hurrying between classes. Today the schools are not as high, but are spread out much more extensively.
Eric Aleman
How did you happen to give your dog the name Sneaky, Eric? It must have seemed fitting for some reason. Names with a meaning were often given in Bible times. Sometimes it was just a desire of the parents, but there were also times when in later life the name did not fit the person at all.
Ste//a Shouten
Have you any idea how many different breeds of dogs there are, Stella? We only need to look around our own neighborhoods, and we see quite a few. All were created by God in the beginning “after their kind.” In the Bible we read a number of times of dogs. Do you know where?
Cindy Kreft
Sometimes weather forecasters are ridiculed because their predictions don’t always come true, but no doubt you are finding out that they do the best they can in a very scientific way. We also know from God’s Word that the Lord holds the winds in His hands, and they blow where He listeth.
Gerrit Neels
Gerrit, sometimes we think of Adam and Eve only as two people of long ago, but the catechism speaks of them as “our first parents.” It brings them much closer to us. The first few chapters of the Bible are so important, since they tell us much about ourselves.
Jenny Boesterd
We are having rather nice fall weather now, Jenny. It can at times be a little cool, but it only reminds us that colder weather will soon be here. Which of your subjects do you like the best? Or are they all equally interesting? Or perhaps equally difficult?
Trevor Aleman
Yes, Trevor, education is important today. There are not so many occupations in which our education does not have advantages. Learning is always necessary, even after we leave school, so we are never done with it. Are you going to be the gardener next year, D.V.?
Philip Schouten
What are you planning for the summer months, Philip? We know that all our plans can change so quickly, but we must plan nevertheless. James said that we ought to say, “If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” That is the biblical way of planning. Give our greetings to your father.
Aline Bosch
Yes, Aline, we also make our mistakes from time to time. 1 am always glad to notice that the boys and girls are catching those mistakes. Do you find the quiz to be more difficult one month over against another month? We do not like to make it too difficult for the younger boys and girls, nor too easy for the older ones.
Mark Neels
It was good to hear from you again, Mark. Are you getting quite a few eggs now? How many chickens do you have? In the Bible we read of bird’s eggs, ostrich eggs, partridge eggs, and cockatrice eggs. The Lord speaks of them to instruct us, even as He does of many other common things.
Brent Aleman
Your letter is the last one this time, Brent. It seems there were quite a few. Do you take both violin and organ lessons? Are you going to have any animals on your farm? Moving always changes things, perhaps for the better, but I am sure there are always some things that you will miss in your new place.
Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz again this month. I always enjoy seeing and opening the mail which arrives at my door, since I know that boys and girls have again been busy with their Bibles as they look for the answers. May the Lord make His Word more precious to you than anything else in the world. It is hard to believe that one book could be of more value than houses, cars, silver or gold, but this would be true if the Lord would open our eyes to see it.
With love, Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
OF THE LORD’S DAYS, SERMONS, AND WEEK DAYS
Have a special care to sanctify the Lord’s Day; for as thou keepest it, so will it be with thee all the week long.
Make the Lord’s Day the market for thy soul; let the whole day be spent in prayer, repetitions, or meditations; lay aside the affairs of the other parts of the week; let the sermon thou hast heard be converted into prayer. shall God allow thee six days, and wilt thou not afford Him one?
In the church, be careful to serve God; for thou art in His eyes, and not in man’s.
Thou mayst hear often, and do well in practicing what thou hearest; but thou must not expect to be told in a pulpit all that thou oughtest to do, but be studious in reading the Scriptures, and other good books; what thou hearest may be forgotten, but what thou readest may better be retained.
Forsake not the public worship of God, lest God forsake thee; not only in public, but in private.
On the week day, when thou risest in the morning, consider,
1. Thou must die;
2. Thou mayst die that minute;
3. What will become of thy soul.
Pray often. At night consider,
1. What sins thou hast committed;
2. How often thou hast prayed;
3. What hath thy mind been bent upon;
4. What hath been thy dealing;
5. What thy conversation;
6. If thou callest to mind the errors of the day, sleep not without a confession to God, and a hope of pardon. Thus, every morning and evening make up thy account with Almighty God, and thy reckoning will be the less at last.
—John Bunyan
PERFECT UNION HEREAFTER
I have seen a field here and a field there stand thick with corn, a hedge or two has separated them; at the proper season the reapers entered. Soon the earth was disburdened and the grain was conveyed to its destined resting place where, blended together in the barn or sack, it could not be known that a hedge had ever separated this grain from that. Thus it is with the Church. Here it grows, as it were, in different fields, and even it may be separated by different hedges. By-and-by, when the harvest is come, all God’s wheat shall be gathered into the garner, without one single mark to distinguish that once they differed in outward circumstantials of form and order.

TIME TO THINK
A busy merchant was offered a tract. He replied, “I have no time to think of such things.”
“Then God will give you eternity in which to think about them,” was the crushing reply.
Seek grace to “think on these things” (Phil. 4:8) now or we shall “remember” (Luke 16:25) them too late in eternity.
THE POMPEII THIEF
At the overthrow of Pompeii, in the year 79, among others who fled from the torrent of lava sent forth by Mount Vesuvius, was a lady who sought, not only to save her life, but also some valuable jewels. With her hands full of rings, bracelets, necklaces, chains, and other treasures, she made her way out of the city, but was then overwhelmed by the rain of ashes from the volcano. She perished with her hands full of jewels; and quite recently, in the course of building operations outside the area of the buried city, her petrified body was unearthed.
Thus the twentieth century brings to light the sad story of one more to whom, nearly two thousand years ago, wealth afforded no protection in the hour of peril and destruction. “The proud shall not be unpunished” (Prov. 16:5).
A BRAHMIN’S NOBLE TESTIMONY
A wealthy Brahmin lady was converted and came to the mission station. Her people told her that they would have to perform the funeral ceremony for her. But with tears the brave woman answered, “I know I am dead to you; but I am alive in Christ, and will live to tell my people of Christ’s love for them.”
Every friend and relative left her. When the time came for her to be baptized, a great crowd gathered; without fear or shame she stepped forward, and began to sing:
Jesus, / my cross have taken,
All to leave and follow Thee.
According to Hindu custom, the family performed her funeral ceremony, burning her in effigy, and depositing the ashes among the dead, thus signifying that she was dead to them. Her own husband set fire to the effigy, and married another woman. But nothing could draw this new convert from the cross of Christ; to her “the gospel” was indeed “the power of God unto salvation” (Rom. 1:16; Gal. 2:20).
COMPARISONS
A rough hand is better than a smooth tongue.
God’s hand is not disturbed by man’s wickedness.
Those who are stedfast in Christ ought to be stedfast for Him.
The peace of God in the soul is an excellent remedy for a quarrelsome temper.
Satan’s servants do not always perform their work in their master’s name (Matt. 7:22).
It is better to be slow of tongue in speaking of Christ, than to be slow of heart to believe in Him.
It is possible to have the doctrines of grace in the head, and not the grace of the doctrines in the heart.
A mere theoretical knowledge of the gospel begets pride; but an experimental knowledge of it begets humility.
Names written with chalk may be easily erased; but not so those that are graven: “I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands.”
When God converts the soul of His people, He performs a good work in them, without asking them any questions, as to when He shall do it, or how He shall do it.
When Satan lifts a sinner high, it is with a view to cast him down low; but when God brings a sinner low, it is with a view to set him up on high. It is better to be brought low by God, than to be raised high by Satan.

THE ROBBER AND THE MISSIONARY
An Australian missionary tells a thrilling story of his experience of the divine faithfulness while on a lonely and dangerous journey. All was safe and easy on his outward way, but on returning he had intrusted to him a large sum of money. A bushranger secretly lay in wait at a lonely spot, intent to murder and rob him. But the traveller in his fear and anxiety dismounted, prayed and talked aloud with God, and committed his way to Him. Thus the robber thought there must be two men when he only expected one, and they kept on talking till the dangerous spot was passed, and his life was preserved.
How often has it been said, “It is vain to serve God” (Mal. 3:14), but “blessed are all they that put their trust in Him” (Psalm 2:12)!
THE GROANS WHICH SPOKE
A servant of God was once called in to see a dying man. A young man was also present. The groans of the dying man were deeply affecting. The servant of God turned to the young man, and said, “Young man, what do you read in these groans?”
He replied, “They denote the sufferings of the dying man.”
“A great deal more than that,” replied the preacher. “Every groan speaks to you and says, ‘Prepare to meet thy God’“ (Amos 4:12).
Nothing more was said, but those words were as an arrow from the quiver of God. The young man turned to God in true repentance of soul and was saved in Christ Jesus (Acts 16:31).
OF PRAYER
Before you enter into prayer, ask thy soul these questions, 1. To what end, O my soul! art thou retired into this place? Art thou come to converse with the Lord in prayer? Is He present, will He hear thee? Is He merciful, will He help thee? Is thy business slight, is it not concerning the welfare of thy soul? What words wilt thou use to move Him to compassion?
To make thy preparation complete, consider that thou art but dust and ashes; and He the great God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that clothes Himself with light as with a garment; that thou art a vile sinner, and He a holy God; that thou art but a poor crawling worm, and He the omnipotent Creator.
In all your prayers, forget not to thank the Lord for his mercies.
When thou prayest, rather let thy heart be without words than thy words without heart.
Prayer will make a man cease from sin, or sin will entice a man to cease from prayer.
The spirit of prayer is more precious than thousands of gold and silver.
Pray often, for prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and a scourge for Satan.
—John Bunyan
THE WAY TO THE PIT
A young man was once entering a theatre. Having paid the money for a seat in that part of it called the pit, he was proceeding there when a person behind him, supposing he should have gone to another part, cried out eagerly, “You’re going the way to the pit!”
The pit! The words pierced his heart. He thought of another pit to which he was hastening—the pit of hell! He immediately went home, “trembling and astonished.” He forsook his sinful ways and, by grace, became a new creature in Christ Jesus (2 Cor. 5:17).
THE BAR
(Written by a Convict at the loliet, Illinois prison)
The name of each saloon’s a Bar
The fittest of its names by far.
A Bar to heaven, a door to hell;
Whoever named it named it well.
A Bar to manliness and wealth,
A door to want and broken health;
A Bar to hope, a Bar to prayer,
A door to darkness and despair;
A Bar to honor, pride and fame,
A door to grief and sin and shame;
A Bar to honored useful life,
A door to brawling, senseless strife;
A Bar to all that’s true and brave,
A door to every drunkard’s grave;
A Bar to joys that home imparts;
A door to tears and aching hearts;
A Bar to heaven, a door to hell,
Whoever named it named it well.
God’s Word says: “Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:10).
MIND WOULD NOT SIT DOWN
Lord Rosebery, speaking at a meeting in Kilmarnock, told of a little girl who was sent to bed. Mother visiting her after a time, found her awake.
“Why are you not asleep, dear?”
“Oh, mother, I cannot get my mind to sit down,” replied the little girl.
She is not alone in that! Some will not get the mind to “sit down,” even in eternity: “Son, remember!” (Luke 16:25).
