BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
This month the quiz is about “hands.” Even when we are quite young, we soon learn to know about our hands. “Wash your hands,” mother says. Besides the words “dirty” and “clean,” there are quite a few other words to describe our hands, such as idle hands, wicked hands, praying hands, open hands, empty hands, etc.
In the Bible some of these very things are mentioned. Not only does the Bible speak about men’s hands, but also about the hand of Cod. How is that possible, since God is a Spirit, and therefore has no body as we do? God uses the word “hands” in this way to teach us about Himself in terms which we can understand. As you work out the quiz, you will find there are some texts which do speak of God’s hand.
We are also taught about the uncleanness of our hands in a spiritual sense. Because of sin our hands have become dirty, but water cannot wash the dirt away. Do we know something about such “dirty” hands? It once was the prayer of a kitchen maid, “Lord show me myself.” Otherwise we do not realize that our hands are so “dirty.” It is a good prayer for all of us. But God’s Word also tells us that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sins. His hands were pierced, His blood did flow to make His people white as snow. Let us ask the Lord, just as the poet did in one of the Psalms, “Wash me, make me pure within; cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin.”
The first letters of the answers to the quiz will spell out words found in Psalm 143. These words speak about many uses for our hands.

And now we shall try to answer our letters again —
Willena Goudzwaard
It was nice to hear from you, Willena. Are there quite a few pigs on your farm? Perhaps they are difficult to count. We may see the Lord’s great wisdom in creating the animals, since each kind has their particular characteristics.
Joel Arnoldussen
We had a good rain today, Joel, and it was badly needed. How dependent we are upon the Lord for both the rain and the sun. Did you make the trip to Vancouver? Rain while camping is not so nice, but we have no control over the weather and must accept it as it is.
Mark Neels
Did you have a nice birthday, Mark? You didn’t mention how old you were going to be. A year is only a short time, it seems, especially when you look back upon it. As you studied about Nehemiah, did you find him to be a good leader of the people?
Christine Mijnders
No doubt you will have returned from your trip to Holland when you read this, Christine. Did you have a good trip? Yes, we have been there several times. We heard that the weather has been quite rainy there, but hope that you also had some nice days.
Brent Aleman
It sounds as if you had a very nice field trip, Brent. There are many places of interest in our area if we only take time to study about them. That must have been something for the people who lived in the town of Frank when the rock slide occurred.
Charmain Huisman
Do your grandparents live closer to you now, Charmain? Yes, I am sure that now and then a question can be quite difficult, but it isn’t good if they are too easy. We read in the Bible that Timothy knew the Scriptures from his youth, and we may hope and pray that many boys and girls may learn to know them as he did.
Leanne Neels
As we see others who are deaf or blind, Leanne, we must sometimes wonder why we are blessed with hearing and good eyes. It should also make us stop and think as to how we are using these wonderful gifts which the Lord has given us, and which others do not have.
Darla Rus
Are there quite a few things of interest in Des Moines, Darla? As we see these larger cities, we are reminded of the major cities which are spoken of in the Bible, but which are no longer known today. We read that Abraham sought a different kind of city. Do you know what it was?
Stella Schouten
Stella, it is sad when we hear of the many crimes which are committed in our days. It is not only in New Zealand, but in all parts of the world. We read in one place in Scripture that Cod saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and it is also true today.
Nelly Stam
No, Nelly, our children are all married, but we do have grandchildren in school. It is sometimes hard to believe that I am already that old, but the Bible speaks of our life as a “tale that is told.” How soon we see that we are getting old.
Ricky Arnoldussen
Are you putting sprinklers in your yard, Ricky? They certainly are convenient. Yes, we may be glad that there is another student for the ministry. We may ask the Lord to send others from among our boys and young men.
Trevor Aleman
Are you keeping busy during your holidays, Trevor? Do you have a large garden? We know that weeds grow rapidly; sometimes it seems as if they grow faster than that which we wanted to grow. Wrong things also spring up so quickly in our hearts, which are also like a garden.
Philip Schouten
You did quite well in describing a “footprint” spanner for me, Philip. Did you think of some things mentioned in the Bible which were made of metal? And do you know who is mentioned in the Bible first as being a metalworker? Give our greetings also to your father.
Joel Stam
You remembered the story of Saul well, Joel. At first King Saul received the Lord’s help in the battles which he and his people fought against the enemies, but later it was so different. Whose fault do you think that was?
Adrienne Mijnders
Congratulations on your graduation from the 8th grade, Adrienne. Another step is made in your education. When you begin school, graduation seems so far away, but now it has arrived. Like Samuel, you may say, “Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.”
Nicole Arnoldussen
It was nice to hear from you again, Nicole. What are you doing during the summer months? Do you like to travel? There are many people travelling at this time of the year, but some do stay at home. I am sure you would see many new places if you travel across country next year, if you live and are well.
Sunday Asagbakhoe
We hope that we may be able to hear from you again, Sunday. You did not write how old you are and how you happened to receive the Banner of Truth. It is sometimes quite surprising to learn of all the places where the Banner of Truth is read.
Many thanks, boys and girls, for your replies to the quiz again this month. May we meet again next month as we study the Word of God together. How much there is for us to learn, and the more we learn, the more we find how little we do know. May the Lord Himself bless His Word unto us.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
A RIDDLE FOR BOYS AND GIRLS WHO AM I?
Dear boys and girls:
Last month a fifth grade student brought this poem to me in chapel at school. I read it to the boys and girls and asked them all to try to solve the question: “Who am I?”
I wonder: Can you solve it, too? If you think you can, please send your answer along with your “Bible Quiz” to Garret Moerdyk, 5211 Woodmont Dr., Kalamazoo, Ml 49001. Next month, the Lord willing, we will let you know the answer, as well as how many of you solved the riddle.
Warmly,
Adam, God made out of dust
But thought it best to make me first,
So I was made before the man
To answer God’s most holy plan.
My body God did make complete
But without arms or legs or feet,
My ways and acts he did control
But to my body gave no soul.
A living being I became
And Adam gave to me my name,
I from his presence then withdrew
And more of Adam never knew.
I did my maker’s law obey
Never went from it astray,
Thousands of miles I go in fear
But seldom on the earth appear.
For purpose wise which God did see
He put a living soul in me,
A soul from me my God did claim
And took from me the soul again
For when from me the soul had fled
I was the same as when first made,
Without hands or feet or soul
I traveled on from pole to pole.
I labored hard by day, by night
To fallen men I gave great light,
Thousands of people young and old
Will by my death great light behold.
No right or wrong can I conceive
The scriptures I cannot believe,
Although my name in there is found
They are to me an empty sound.
No fear of death doth trouble me
Real happiness I shall never see,
To heaven I shall never go
Nor to a grave of hell below.
Now when these lines you slowly read
Go search your Bible with all speed,
For my name is written there
I honestly to you declare.
LYING
A man who stayed with friends for a weekend said that he listened with great interest as the children of the family, at the prompting of their father, recalled points from the sermon they had heard that Sabbath morning. He was especially struck by one of the boys, not more than five or six, and whom he did not think would remember anything, saying to his father, “He (the minister) said that it is better to be poor than to be a liar.” The boy was much impressed by the point. Are we so convinced of the evil of falsehood that we are prepared to suffer poverty, or perhaps punishment or some other painful experience, rather than evade it by telling a lie?
It is a sad fact that among the first sins we commit in our lives is the sin of lying. As the Psalmist tells us, men in their fallen state “go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.” Our being “born in sin and shapen in iniquity” means that we are born with a heart that is “deceitful above all things and desperately wicked” Ger. 17:9). Jesus tells us that it is a heart out of which proceeds all kinds of evil, including “false witness” (Matt. 15:19).
The sin of lying is one that can be very easily and quickly committed — just the saying of one word (perhaps a “No” instead of a “Yes”) and guilt is incurred. But even when there is the use of complicated methods of hiding the truth, it is amazing how adept the deceitful heart can be. Joseph’s brothers were so skilful and crafty in deceiving their father that they convinced him that Joseph was dead, and he “mourned for his son many days.” How did they hide their wickedness of having sold their young brother to the Midianite merchants? They did not explicitly say, “Joseph is dead,” but, having dipped his coat in goat’s blood, they presented it to their father with the statement, “Know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.” Let us beware of falsehood by making subtle insinuations or by creating false impressions.
How often, in trying to cover sin, one lie leads to another, and a tissue of lies is produced.
Oh, what a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to deceive.
This was seen in the case of Gehazi, the servant of Elisha. He quietly slipped away and went after Naaman, who had been miraculously healed of his leprosy. How vexed Gehazi was that his master Elisha refused a reward from Naaman. Gehazi’s covetous heart propelled him after Naaman, and soon Naaman was duped by Gehazi’s fabrication.
Gehazi returned with his arms full of the gains of his deception, but how was he to cope with any difficulties that might arise from his actions? His solution was more lies. When asked by Elisha, “Whence comest thou, Gehazi?” he immediately and falsely replied, “Thy servant went no whither.”
As you know, Gehazi was not successful in his double-dealing, for the judgment of God came upon him. So it will be with all liars, for “a false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape” (Prov. 19:9). “Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel” (Prov. 20:17).
When you’ve been guilty of a fault,
Oh, lie not to conceal it,
For it will happen soon or late
That something will reveal it.
And then, whate’er the deed has been,
However great your trouble,
The faults, the sorrows, and the sin,
Will all be rendered double.
The seriousness of the sin of lying is emphasized by the fact that liars are expressly mentioned as being shut out of heaven. “And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that maketh a lie.” Not only so, but liars will be consigned to the place of eternal woe, for “all liars shall have their part in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone” (Rev. 21:8).
Let us then be resolved to tell the truth at all times and in all circumstances, remembering that God “desireth truth in the inmost parts.” If you have to plead guilty to this sin of lying then go to the Lord who is “ready to forgive,” confessing your sin, seeking, in the name of Christ, His pardon, and asking Him to keep you. “Remove from me the way of lying” (Ps. 119:29). Above everything may you know the saving and keeping power of Christ who says, “I am the truth.”

DESTROYED BY LITTLE THINGS
One day in Colorado a great tree fell down. It was just a sappling when Columbus discovered America. Fourteen times this tree had been struck by lightning. Storms and earthquakes had shaken its huge body and pulled at the roots which anchored it to the earth. Mountain torrents had swept against it in fierce onslaughts, as if to bend it to the ground. Still the tree stood.
In the end, however, tiny beetles killed this forest giant. They bored under the bark, destroyed the cambium jacket which nourished the tree, and then dug deeper into the heart to finish their work of destruction. At last, consumed by little things, the once mighty tree fell.
Solomon said, “Take us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vine” (S.S. 2:15). The sly, hidden dangers, often unnoticed or ignored by us, dig away at our lives, finally overwhelming us. Usually we notice the big leaks or heavy blows that drain off the resources of our lives and wreck us. But the little things, the idle thoughts and the careless deeds slowly eat through the outer coverings which we may have leaned too heavily on to protect us. Then, digging deeper into our very hearts, they bring hurt and sorrow to our lives.
