Garret J. Moerdyk serves as elder in the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Dear Boys and Girls,

As the end of the year comes near, we again look back upon the many blessings which the Lord has given us in the year 1986. What a long list could be made if we really stopped to think of them. Perhaps you could never reach the end of such a list. The psalmist in writing Psalm 136 also listed blessings, travelling back in the history of his people, and the only reason for them all was the great mercy of God.

What is mercy? It is the goodness of God shown to man in his misery. The children of Israel were not more deserving of this than others, but it pleased God to show them His mercy. Just read in that psalm of the many displays of His mercy unto them.

He is the same God even today. By His servants He calls to men and women, boys and girls. They say, “There is a Savior born.” Many have no need for a Savior, just as in former days. The Bible tells us that He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But what do we do? How we should desire with the shepherds to seek Him, saying, “Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known.”

The first letters of our answers will spell out eight words found in the last verse of Psalm 136.

King Nebuchadnezzar said, “There is no ____God that can deliver after this sort.”

Moses and the children of Israel sang, “I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed ____.”

Zacharias prophesied, saying, “Blessed be the Lord God of ____, for He hath visited and redeemed His people.”

After seeing the gifts of the people, David blessed the Lord, saying “Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the ____.”

There was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, “Glory

to God in the highest, and on ____ peace, good will to men.”

Paul wrote to Timothy, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of ____ be made for all men.”

Darius, speaking of the God of Daniel, wrote, “He worketh signs and wonders in ____ and in earth.”

Hannah said, “The Lord hath given me my petition which I ____ of Him.”

____ said to Elisha, “Thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the Lord.”

Nathanael said to Jesus, “Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the ____ of Israel.”

Mary said, “My ____ doth magnify the Lord.”

Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Thanks be unto God for His ____ gift.”

When established again in his kingdom, ____ said, “Now I praise and extol and honour the King of heaven.”

After the Lord Jesus had healed the ten lepers, only one returned, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him ____

When Zacharias wrote, “His name is John,” his mouth was ____ immediately and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

Anna, coming in the temple at that instant, gave ____ likewise unto the Lord.

John the Baptist said, “A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from ____.”

David in Psalm 34 said, “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us ____ His Name together.”

The shepherds returned, ____ and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen.

A woman, having an alabaster box of ____ of spikenard, brake the box and poured it on the head of the Lord Jesus.

Barak and ____ sang, “I will sing unto

the Lord; I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel.”

Samuel said to Saul, “Behold, to ____ is better than sacrifice.”

James wrote, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the ____ of lights.”

Zacharias said that the Lord had “raised up an ____ of salvation for us in the house of His servant David.”

When the wise men saw the star again, they rejoiced with ____ great joy.

Daniel kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before His God, as he did ____

The prophet had said, “Behold, a ____

shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel.”

The Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the ____ saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.

The apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His ____

And now there are again some letters to answer —

Frank Kardux

Your letter is the first one, Frank. Yes, we had heard about the sad

accident in which a young man was killed. How quickly our life can come to an end. When we leave our homes, are we ever certain that we shall again return safely?

Joleen L Droge

Which of the kings are you studying about now, Joleen? I know there are lots of kings mentioned in the Bible, and it is not always so easy to remember them in order. Or don’t you have to know who was the first king, and who his son was, and so on?

Remco Funcke

With three of your family in Holland, I can imagine that it is rather quiet at your house, Remco. You certainly will be glad to see them again, D.V., after such a long time. We have already set our clocks back, so we are not on daylight saving time now.

Estella Schouten

Did you pass the test at school, Estella? It is a great blessing if we may have the wisdom to do our schoolwork well, but we also know that the Lord is the giver of wisdom. We may ask Him for it, but also must acknowledge Him when it is given us.

Charmain Huisman

We have several inches of snow on the ground at the moment, Charmain. Winter has set in quite early for us. Have you seen any snow yet? We may ask the Lord if He will open the Scriptures for us, just as He did for the two men in Luke 24.

Ricky Arnoldussen

Moving from one place to another is a lot of work, Ricky. Have

you ever moved before? We have quite a few more possessions

than they had in former days. How are you doing in school? Give

our greetings to your parents and also to your grandmother

Arnoldussen.

Fran Vander Meulen

Thank you for the birthday wishes, Fran. It must be a wonder that we are again permitted to have a birthday. You have a good memory. We hope that you too may have many more of them. Do you often think of that which the Lord Jesus said, “You must be born again?”

Michelle Boesterd

It was very nice to hear from you, Michelle. Have you had to use your First Aid training yet? We always hope that it won’t be necessary, but it can be very useful if needed. In the Bible we read of the good Samaritan who bound up the wounds of a wounded man.

Evelyn Feyter

Have you ever made a trip to Holland, Evelyn? It has not been five years ago since we were there, but I would like to make the trip again, the Lord willing. Did you find that the quiz was easier this time? We don’t want to make it too difficult, but neither should it be too easy.

loel Stam

Did you sell a lot of chocolate bars, Joel? We also read about buying and selling in the Bible. Do you know where we first read about it in the Bible? It is in the book of Genesis. Perhaps if you think about it, you will know the answer.

Anita Droge

Many people seem to have colds at this time of the year, Anita. It is such a blessing when we have good health, but we don’t think about it so much unless we become sick. In the Bible we also read about several different sicknesses. Do you know of some?

Philip Schouten

Did your brother have a good trip, Philip? I am sure he had much to tell about when he returned. Breeding snails is a hobby that I hadn’t heard much about, but that is because I don’t know much about snails. The Bible does speak of them, but only in two places.

Cindy Kreeft

Do you like to practice on the violin, Cindy? Whichever musical instrument one plays, it always takes a lot of practice. What did you learn special about Zwingli? Do we agree with him in the things which he taught? Give our greetings to your parents.

Jenny Boesterd

The subjects become more difficult in school as the years go by, Jenny, but you are also growing along with them. The mind is sometimes said to be like a sponge; it just soaks up knowledge like the sponge soaks up water. The human is another wonder of Cod’s wisdom in creation.

Derek Kreft

When we see the leaves turn colors and fall at the end of the summer, Derek, we know something of what the prophet Isaiah was saying in chapter 65, “We all do fade as a leaf.” It is surprising how many leaves there are on a tree especially when we rake them into piles.

Nelly Stam

We have again come to the last letter, Nelly, and that happens to be your letter. It will be the last one of this year, since the next issue will be in January, D.V. We see that the year too is like a cloud that disappears. It is hard to believe how quickly those 365 days pass by.

To all the boys and girls, our sincere thanks for your replies to the quizzes throughout the year. May the Lord bless His Word unto your hearts and impress it in your minds. The Word of the Lord came to Samuel personally while he was still young and we read that Timothy knew the Holy Scriptures from childhood. May that also be your privilege. We wish you the blessing of a true Christmas and in the year 1987, together with those who are dear unto you. With love, Your friend, “Uncle Garret”

EDWARD VI — THE YOUNG JOSIAH”

Two of Henry VIII’s children ascended the throne and shaped the history of England in a very definite way. They were Edward VI and Mary.

When Henry died on January 28th, 1547, Edward, son of Jane Seymour, succeeded to the throne at the early age of nine years. Whatever his father may have been in character and conduct he had not denied his son the best education it was possible for him to provide.

His tutors, Sir Anthony Cook, Dr. Richard Cox, and Sir John Cheke, were not only scholars, but Bible-loving men. In this atmosphere of piety and Christian influence the young prince grew, so that he was regarded by all as learned, amiable and pious.

The Scriptures, we must ever remember, were not written in order to make us scholars but saints, but Edward, through much attention to the Word of God was both. Of course, when we remember that Cranmer was also personally responsible for the young prince’s studies we can understand in some measure the reason he was so pronounced a Protestant. He sought, as Josiah of old, to walk before the Lord, keeping “His commandments, His testimonies, and His statutes” (2 Kings 23:3).

At Edward’s coronation, three swords were brought to be carried before him, as the king of three kingdoms. He said there was yet one missing. The nobles inquired his meaning. He replied, it was the Bible; adding, ‘That book is the Sword of the Spirit, and to be preferred before these swords...Without that sword we are nothing, we can do nothing, we have no power. From that we are what we are this day. From that we receive whatsoever it is that we at this present do assume. He that rules without it is not to be called God’s minister, or a king. Under that we ought to live, to fight, to govern the people and to perform all our own affairs. From that alone we obtain all power, virtue, grace, salvation, and whatsoever we need of divine strength.” He then commanded a Bible to be brought and carried before him with the greatest reverence.

It was in Edward’s reign that the Prayer Book emerged, which Cranmer was largely responsible for, but it was not until Elizabeth’s reign that it made its final triumph. Also, Grammar Schools “for the finding of poor men’s sons to exercise the office of salvation” were founded by Edward after he had heard Cranmer preach on such a need.

Edward’s reign was as short as it was good. He entered into a decline and died on July 6,1553, having reigned only six years. Just before his death he uttered this prayer:

“Lord, I commit my spirit to Thee. O Lord, Thou knowest how happy it were for me to be with Thee, yet for the sake of Thy chosen, send me life and health, that I may truly serve Thee. O Lord God, bless Thy people, and save Thine inheritance. O Lord God, save Thy chosen people of England. O Lord God, defend this realm from Papistry; and maintain Thy true religion, that I and my people may praise Thy holy Name for Thy Son Jesus Christ’s sake.”

From Our Protestant Heritage by W. St. Clair Taylor

WE WISH YOU WELL

Dear friends, we wish you well indeed,
We wish you well on earth,
We wish for you above all else
A new, a heavenly birth.

Remember, though you prosper here,
Except you’re born again,
The kingdom of eternal bliss
You never shall obtain.

O may you feel you have a soul,
And in your days of youth
Be led to seek and know the Lord
The Way, the Life, the Truth.

You cannot live the Christian life,
Or die as Christians die
Except, by God the Spirit taught,
To Jesus Christ you fly.
