BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
Again the time of year is here when the church remembers the suffering, death and resurrection of the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. The message which the apostle Paul brought to the Corinthians was “Jesus Christ and Him crucified,” and that same message is still necessary for us. The work of the Lord Jesus as Mediator is spoken of in every sermon that we hear, but do we take notice of it as we should? The purpose for which He came upon this earth can so easily be overlooked. Why did He die? For whom did He die? These are questions for which God’s Word gives clear answers. However, many wrong answers are taught today to these questions, and therefore let us study our Bibles together, asking the Lord to give us His light upon it. As did the thief on the cross, may we likewise beg, “Lord, remember me,” for the poet testified, “He hears the needy when they cry.” May all of us, both young and old, be such needy ones.
The crossword this month is about those special events which took place when the Lord Jesus was upon this earth.

We will again try to answer the letters which we have received:
Ria Nieuwenhuis
Since your letter is on top, Ria, you will be the first this time. Do you have names for all those calves? I suppose you learn to know them just as a teacher knows the boys and girls in the classroom at school.
Cathy Van Den Dorpel
We want to welcome you, Cathy, in joining with us to answer the quiz. Even though we hear something read from the Bible every day, there is still so much that we do not know or remember. We hope to hear from you again next month.
Amy Elizabeth De Vries
Since you have so many trees around your house, Amy, I think the birds feel at home, especially since you also feed them. What a variety of birds there are, and all were created by God in His great wisdom. We, too, have bird feeders and enjoy watching them.
Heather lansen
What kind of berries do you pick in the summer, Heather? I know some berries are easier to pick than others. I have not heard of your uncle, but I would imagine that his position as mayor keeps him quite busy. What is the population of Chilliwack?
Derek Kreft
You say Hello to Edson for us, Derek. We hope, if the Lord spares us, to be able to meet him sometime. Do the coyotes pay your chicken coop many visits during the summer? If they become hungry enough, they probably look for food wherever they can find it.
Charmain Huisman
You wrote a long letter, Charmain, and we enjoyed it. Did you also have the flu? When one or two of the family have it, there are usually more who get it. Yes, a person is so quick to complain if things do not go to his or her liking, but that too is complaining against God.
Joel Arnoldussen
We are quite well, Joel, and hope this is also true of you and your family. How are you doing in school? It is hard to believe that only a few more months remain in this school year, but in this we see how true God’s Word is which says that our life is as a shadow that passes by.
Jeanette Droogendyk
After holidays it always seems especially difficult to step back into our regular duties, Jeanette, whether it is school or work. However, if we think of those who are not able to do what we do, how thankful we should be for our many privileges and blessings.
Deborah Fintelman
It was nice to hear from you and to have you join with us, Deborah. At the moment there is a nice snow cover again, making everything look white and clean, but for several weeks we had rainy weather. Give our greetings to your parents, and do write again.
Remco Funcke
I see that there are two letters from you, Remco. Sometimes one arrives just after the names have been sent in, and then it has to wait until the next month. It sounds like you had nice holidays. How long will your grandparents be staying? Can you think of examples in the Bible which tell us of grandparents and their grandchildren?
Wendy lansen
Would you like to be a teacher, Wendy? I am sure it is not always easy, but whether we are teaching or are the student, we may ask the Lord for the wisdom which we need. Daniel brought his needs before the Lord three times every day, and we can realize something of the difficult task he had to do.
Trina Van Tol
Trina, it is a great blessing if our needs may continually bring us before the Lord. A person usually tries to help himself out of the troubles of life, but it is so necessary to plead with the poet, “Lord, be Thou my helper in the strife.” Thanks for the card.
Nicole Arnoldussen
Your family picture was very nice, Nicole. It seems you are all growing up so quickly. If we were to see you more often, it wouldn’t be quite so evident. Of Samuel we read that he “grew on, and was in favour both with the Lord, and also with men.” It would be a great blessing if this might be said of us.
Linda Van Brugge
Although boys and girls see snow as something to play in, the farmers look at it as moisture for the fields, Linda. It is just the same with water. It is used for many different purposes, but for a thirsty person, it is especially important. God’s Word can also serve a special purpose for those who have a special need.
Leona Vanden Brink
You mentioned Mission Week, Leona, and I was thinking that the countries where the mission work is done can also be compared to “thirsty” people. Do you think mission work would be a “nice work?”
Cindy Kreft
Have you had much snow this winter, Cindy? The psalmist said that the Lord giveth snow, and in this we see that also snow comes from His hand. How old was Bryon on his birthday? You tell him that we wish him many more birthdays to come.
Jonas Arnoldussen
I think everyone likes holidays, Jonas, but there wouldn’t be much work done if all we had were holidays. What special projects are you working on at school now? All natural things and all accomplishments of men direct us back to the wonderful gifts of God.
Neil De Boer
Thank you for the school picture of you and Peter, Neil. I sometimes look back at the many pictures I have accumulated throughout the years. Some of them are now parents whose children are answering the Bible quiz. There is the same need to study our Bibles today as there was at that time.
Julie De Smit
It would be quite a task to show where each boy or girl lives that answers the quiz, but perhaps sometime we could try to give the totals from each area. It is always a disappointment when a minister has to leave a congregation, Julie, and this is true also for other congregations which are vacant and may hear him only occasionally.
Steven Hendrick Neerdink
When the sun comes out in February and March, the snow disappears quite rapidly, Steven. Most people, especially older ones, are glad to see the spring arrive. Are you? We hope that we may hear from you again next month.
Rebekah Van Der Brink
Thanks for a nice letter, Rebekah. Your letter is the last one this time, as it is again time to send them off to the printer. It sounds like your school day is filled with interesting subjects and projects. Which subject do you like best? Or do you like them all?
Many thanks again, boys and girls, for your replies to the quiz. We pray that we may be spared until next month, so that we may meet each other here again. Hoping then to hear from you,
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
VIEWING SIN PROPERLY
It is fit, and we ought to see our sins: but stay not there too long. See them we must, but do not fasten on them, so as to shackle us from coming to Christ. I have said it, and will say it, that that sight of sin which doth not drive a man to Christ for mercy, is ever sinful. Labour therefore to see thy sins, and that thus: first, see thy sins in the royal law, as in the right glass; a glass that will present them such as they be, and look not off till thou hast seen them so. Second, so see them, as that by such a holy gaze at them, thou mayest see an utter insufficiency in thyself to satisfy for them. Third, so see them, that thou mayest by that sight behold an absolute necessity of Christ to succor thee, and then away speedily to Him that can only help thee, and dwell no longer on thy sins, but go to the throne of grace, where is plentiful redemption, whence issue out pardons in abundance to remove that guilt that sin hath brought upon thy soul; and where is power enough to enable thee to be more than conqueror over thy corruption. Briefly, every soul should say thus, “It is true, Lord, my sins are many and great, for I have departed from thee the Fountain of bliss; but shall I go on further from thee, and persist in evil? God forbid. Let me not fly from mercy, but lie at the feet of my Savior’s mercy, till he look upon me as He once did upon Peter” (Luke 22:61).
