O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust. I Timothy 6:20

“MY SON, GIVE ME THINE HEART.”

Proverbs 23:26

The Lord speaks to us through the wise author of Proverbs as unto children: “My son, My daughter, give Me your heart.” By our heart is meant our inner life, our thoughts and our inclinations. Our thoughts should be directed upon God. We must speak to Him often and give our all to Him. That should be the purpose of our life. It is wrong to think that we can divide our heart between God and the world. The Lord wants all or nothing, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart.” Our answer to the call: “Give Me thine heart” should be, “Lord take Thou my heart and establish Thy Throne and Kingdom in it. “Give Me thy heart” means: let your eye be directed to what My Word proclaims, upon the leadings of My providence and the good examples of My people which are written in My Word.

Our eyes must be directed to it just as a child who is learning to write looks at the example that the teacher puts on the blackboard. Solomon warns us against the sins which are so destructive and lead to our ruin. He warns against greediness and drunkenness. The temptation to commit these sins are also great in our time. Be on guard against them, young people. Keep far away from places that lead you astray. Solomon says, “Be not among winebibbers and riotous eaters of flesh.” Those who live in this evil take pleasure in causing you also to be drawn into like destruction. You will be brought to ruin in both spiritual and physical aspects, and the end is eternal destruction. Too much alcohol stupefies and makes one negligent in studies and in employment. It brings one to a dreadful life style, and afterwards… ?

The writer of Proverbs mentions another terrible sin which totally destroys the heart. It is the sin of adultery and immorality. It is a sin from whose snare very few people escape. It is a deep ditch and a narrow pit. Be warned, says God’s Word. Stay far away from them. How easily you are led astray and brought like an ox to the slaughter. The adulterous person seeks to seduce to unlawful passions, to wicked lusts and to immorality. They propose friendship but have evil intentions. They take from you all that you have and all that has value for you. Those who are reared in the Word of God must be especially watchful because for those in particular snares are set to take them by surprise.

Young people, to you the Lord says, “My son, My daughter, give Me your heart.” In these words hes a deep meaning. O certainly, surrendering ourselves is the work of divine grace, for otherwise we would never surrender. Still it is our duty to give our heart, freely and unconditionally, in complete surrender. The Lord has a full right to it.

“Give Me your heart.” Not to Satan, not to the world with all of its flatteries, but to Me to Whom alone it belongs, and Who alone can bless it. I created you in a glorious state. You are My creature and My property, but in the fall you have departed from Me. Not withstanding I desire to save you through My Son, Whom I have given in My good pleasure to be a Surety and Saviour. I do not desire your possessions, your services, your works, your suffering, but “your heart.” Let all things be directed upon My paths, walking in them with gladness and devotion. No, that doesn’t agree with our will. But the Lord Himself will lead us in the way which He has shown in His Word and Law. Walking in that way you shall receive the true happiness and a sure future.

Do not delay in giving heed to the Lord Who stands at your door and knocks. Beseech the Holy Spirit earnestly and continually for that great salvation which shall endure.

How great the goodness kept in store

For those who fear Him and adore

In meek humility.

BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

This month the crossword puzzle is about people and places. The Bible gives us the names of many persons, some rich, some poor, of many different occupations and from many different places. Since the Bible times, many more people have lived upon the earth. What a lot of people there has been in all those years. For each person it is true what the Lord Jesus said to Nico-demus, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” It is true for men and women, boys and girls. Some would ask, “How many will be there?” We read in the book of Revelations that John saw a great multitude, which no man could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. A similar question was once asked the Lord Jesus. It was, “Lord, are there few that be saved?” His answer was, “Strive to enter in at the straight gate.” You may read it for yourself in Luke 13. “They shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.” But will our place be there? God’s Word gives us directions to obtain this great blessing. Paul wrote to Timothy that the Holy Scriptures are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. May our study of the Word of God be with praying hearts that such wisdom may also be given us by the Lord.

And now to answer the letters which we have received — AMY BEEKE - We are all quite well, Amy. I think your grandparents are also looking forward to your visit. Do you have quite a few children in the nursery? Some children like to be in the nursery, but I suppose there are some who don’t. Hoping to see you, D.V. SONYA DEN BOER - There are always some answers which arrive too late, Sonya, but then their names will appear in the following issue. This is probably especially true of those in western Canada. The weather here has been rather nice of late. I see that I have two letters from you. KRISTI MARIE DEVRIES -Thanks for your letter, Kristi. Are you keeping quite busy this summer? It is good to have vacation, but it is also good that it is only for a few months. Vacation all year would not be good, would it? Was the quiz as easy this month?

JANET KARDUX - We hope that you had a nice birthday, Janet, but also that you may have many more of them. When you talk with persons who are becoming old, they often mention how fast the years have passed by for them, but younger ones usually think that a year is a long time. ESTELLA SCHOUTEN - We sometimes think that trees are standing firmly, E stella, but we see the power of the wind when they can be toppled so easily. Yet the Lord Jesus had only to speak a word, and the winds ceased and the sea became calm. How true it is that the Lord reigneth.

LEONA VANDEN BRINK - Did you have a lot of problem with grasshoppers, Leona? I would imagine that they can do much damage to crops. In the Bible we will also find grasshoppers mentioned on several occasions. Do you know of any instances?

JEREMY KAAT - The word “canyon” is not to be found in the Bible, Jeremy. You may perhaps find other words with similar meanings. You will have to study a bit and see what you can find. Hiking in the woods can be very interesting, especially if you take notice of all that is to be found there.

CINDY KREFT - How is your brother now, Cindy? How quickly accidents can happen. We read about accidents in the newspapers or hear about them from others, but usually do not think that such things might also happen to us. But sicknesses and accidents can also be used for a purpose by the Lord, for all things are in His hand.

JESSICA ANKER - June 2 is also the birthday of one of my daughters, Jessica. In the Bible we also read about a person’s birthday. Do you know where that can be found? Your rabbits have nice names. Is it a lot of work taking care of them?

PHILIP SCHOUTEN - What will you be making in your metals class, Philip? Or have you just started with this class? In the Bible we read about the goldsmiths and about a silversmith, but I don’t think that is the kind of metal with which you will be working.

TRINA VAN TOL - It was nice to hear from you again, Trina, and to read your comments. There are many treasures to be found in the Word of God, but we do not always take notice of them. It is a great blessing if the Lord shows them to us.

ANDRE VAN DE BRUIN-HORST - In past years we have given books to the boys and girls who answered the Bible quizzes from month to month, Andre. Since it is quite a task to do so, I have put it to one side for some time, but do hope to do so again in the near future, D.V.

SARA ANKER - What are you doing during the summer months, Sara? Maybe you are already anxious for school to start again. Do you do some reading? I am sure there are always some things to do which are helpful to others, especially if you look for them.

MARIA DROOGENDYK - Your letter is the last one, Maria. You wrote that you had the name of a friend who was looking for a penpal. Perhaps there is someone interested in writing letters and receiving them. The request is for: Alma Badenhorst, Molopolaan 66, Doringkloof, Verwoerdburg, 0140, South Africa. Alma is a girl about 18 years old, and can correspond in English. We hope she will receive several letters.

This again concludes the letters for this time. Many thanks to all of you for your replies to the quiz, and we hope that we may meet again next month, D.V. May the Lord spare and protect us, wherever we might go, but above all else, grant us a special blessing by means of His Word.

With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

THE TURNED-DOWN PAGES

“Tell me all about it,” said young Rowland to the greyheaded Edmund Jenkins, who sat in his cottage with his large Bible on the round table in front of him. “Tell me all about it please!” “You want to know how I lost my cottage and then came to live in it again?” Alright I will tell you most of it as near as I can, the good and the bad.”

“The cottage was much as you see it now when we first came to live here. My wife kept it spotless; the floor as red as cherry, and the walls as white as a whitewash brush could make them. My days were spent on the farm, sowing, reaping, or mowing and at the plough. Our only son James grew up to be a big lad, he was our only child, had it been otherwise, I have often thought, it might have been better for us and for him too. But the Lord’s ways are not our ways. Then young Andrews came to live in the village, and he led Jem, as we called him, into all sorts of evil ways. Many a sad scene there was, for we loved him as we loved our lives. How we proved that a “foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.” Prov. 17, 25. Hardly a day passed but what they were into mischief. My own father was alive then. He had been brought up in the admonition of the Lord, and so had he brought me up. It cut him to the heart therefore to see his grandson in all this trouble and “standing in the way of sinners.” Our poor thoughtless James heeded not his grief, but seemed rather determined to bring down his grey hairs with sorrow to the grave.

“I talked to James, and so did his mother. We coaxed him and promised him, if only he would leave off his bad ways, but alas, I acted too weakly, nay I ought to say sinfully, in not correcting him sharply, for the Scripture says, “chasten they son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.” Prov. 19, 18. My father told me so over and over again, and still I went on making excuses for my behavior and his. James went from bad to worse, idling by day, drinking by night, Sabbath and weekday, until he brought us down to poverty, and mocked at me when I spoke to him.

“One night when I came home, the flickering light of the fire was flashing every now and then on the window panes. I happened to look in and just saw a hand turning down a leaf of one of the pages of my bible. This put me in a rage, for I was very careful of my bible; but I saw who did it. It was my father. At the first opportunity you may be sure I looked, and there I found the page was turned down at the part where God’s judgments are declared against Eli for not restraining his wicked sons. 1 Sam. 3, 13. The words struck to my very heart. You might think from then on I should have kept a tight rein on James, but no. I foolishly gave him only mild rebukes. “Jem,” I said to him one day, “you will be the ruin of us all.” He went away laughing, and the very next day young Andrews was taken up for robbery. Jem was under suspicion too, but it so happened he was not one of the party. In the middle of that night I heard my poor lad come in as I thought to bed, but instead he took the rent-money, tied up his clothes in a bundle and ran off to sea. We should not have known he had gone to sea unless we had been told by the publican.

“And now trouble came thickand fast. Everybody said my son was guilty, and that I had sent him off out of the way. Farmer Brooks, for whom I worked, told me to get another place as he had no notion of employing people of bad character. Soon after that we had fever in the cottage, and we had to part with our goods one after another, and before we were half well, we were all turned out together, because I could not pay the rent. My father went into the workhouse, and mother and I were glad enough to get a poor lodging in the village. These were heavy troubles, Rowland, but I had brought them on my own head. Father never got over the fever, and going to the workhouse preyed on his mind. “Give my blessing to James” he said “if he ever returns.” Sometimes trouble hardens the heart. If pleased God that it should soften mine, for I saw plainer and plainer my folly in not correcting my son, and I saw in these things a chastening for my good. When I followed my dear father to the grave I was enabled to say, “It is the Lord; let’ Him do what seemeth him good.” “Years went by, and though I went into the fields to work, I had little heart for labour. Oh how fervently did I pray that God might only make my son sensible of his sins, and lead him to the Saviour of sinners. Who can tell thought I? Ten years passed when news reached us, that our son was on the merchant ship Mary Anne when it foundered at sea, that only three or four were saved and he was not among them. This was indeed a heavy stroke, but I was kept from murmuring, though my poor wife hardly held her head up for five years. Farmer Brooks had taken me back into his service by this time. It was harvest and in driving a loaded waggon through the gate I fell, and was badly trampled on by the horses. Though my life was mercifully preserved it was some time before I could hobble out with a stick to get some sun. My face was deadly pale, and I doubt whether my neighbours would have known me had they seen me in a strange place. I was resting on a bank when a man came along dressed in a blue jacket and trousers, with a bundle hanging from a stick on his shoulders. “Maybe master” he said “you have cruised about these parts some time, can you tell me if old Joshua Jenkins is alive?” At the name of my father the blood rushed to my face, for the thought came to me that this sailor had come to tell me something of the death of my prodigal son. I stammered out that Joshua Jenkins had been lying under yonder yew tree for some time. “I thought as much,” he said, seemingly in a light-hearted way, “and maybe too his--,” but he came to stand as though the words had choked him. There was something about him that went through me, and made me shake, “The old man had a scapegoat of a grandson” he said, “who ran away to sea; do you know whether this young man’s father and m--,” but there he choked again. “If you know anything about Jem Jenkins who went down with the Mary Anne please tell me” I said, “for I am his broken-hearted father.” No sooner had I said it than he was on his knees before me, and the next with his arms around my neck. Oh, Rowland if ever I knew happiness it was then, the goodness of God overwhelmed me. The poor prodigal who was dead was alive again. But more, his eyes had been opened, and his heart humbled. The walk back to the cottage was a short one, but, oh, what a difference. Here was a change indeed brought about by Him alone who had said “There is no God beside me.” And when we got indoors and I told his mother, well, had you seen my poor wife you would have tought her beside herself. She sobbed and she hugged him again and again. Fathers can feel, but not like mothers. It was a day never to be forgotten.

“It was an odd thing, but when at night I reached out for the bible, my son noticed the leaf which had been turned down fifteen years before by his grandfather. It was the only one ever turned down in the book and I had never turned it back. He asked about it so I told him the whole story. We wept over the text together, and it did us good to mingle our tears together over God’s holy word. He then took out a little bible from his pocket, which had belonged to a shipmate of his, who, like himself, had been a trouble to his parents. This young man before he died had given this bible to my son telling him he hoped he would make better use of it than he had done. To his surprise Jem had found three pages turned down in this bible, and the words he had read were these, “Cursed be he that setteth light by his father and his mother.” Deut. 27, 16. “My son hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.” Prov. 1, 8. “Honour thy father and thy mother,” Ex. 20, 12, and these brought him to his knees. Who had turned those leaves down we shall never know.

“The next day we all felt a little calmer. I told Jem that Andrews had been transported, and that his own character had been cleared concerning the robbery. He told me he had not returned empty, and handed me all his money — a pretty penny I assure you, Rowland. As might be expected, with this great weight off our minds, my wife picked up again in health and so did I. And who did all this? I knew who did it, blessed be His great name. And to add to this, Jem eventually agreed with Farmer Brooks to buy the cottage, and here we are all three living together, a hard working son to provide for us, and a gracious God watching over us, and we see His hand in all things. I have told you a long story Rowland, may it please God in His goodness to make it useful to you by inclining your heart to honour your parents, and, should you one day have children of your own, to correct them betimes according to the Word of God.”

“Little Gleaner”, 1869

WORLDLY THINGS UNSATISFYING

At the court of a certain king, the high chamberlain was rich, clothed in costly apparel, and lived in the grandest fashion. There came to him once from a distant land a friend whom he had not seen for a long time. Anxious to do him honour, the chamberlain made him a feast and invited all his friends. The table was laden with the choicest food in dishes of gold and silver. The rich man sat at the head of his table; on his right hand sat the friend from a distant land, and they ate and drank until they were satisfied. The friend then said to the high chamberlain, “I have never in all my travels seen such magnificence.” And he praised all he saw, and esteemed his friend happy indeed. But the rich man only reached for an apple, large, smooth, and rosy as the cheek of a sleeping infant. He handed it to his friend; “See this apple; it lay on a gold dish, and is lovely to behold.” So the other took the fruit and cut it through. At its center was a worm. The stranger glanced at his host, but he just looked down and sighed.
