A PERIODICAL FOR YOUNG AND OLD
O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. I Timothy 6:20
JOY IN BETHLEHEM
“For unto us a Child is born…” Isaiah 9:6a
With gladness the birth of a child is made known to us. This is not always true in these ungodly days. A true mother who expects an increase in the family is sometimes looked upon with compassion or even mocked. We should not permit this to take place among us, for the Lord sees this and He is not an idle spectator. The Lord will surely undertake for parents who desire to live according to His Word.
Gladness at the birth of a child is only natural. But how much greater reason for rejoicing there is at the birth of THE Child of which Isaiah speaks. If the birth of a common child is a gift of God, how great the gift is which God gave in this Child. This is His own and only Child, His Holy Child Jesus. This Child is not only a Gift of God’s Holy power, but especially of His love and grace, and of His mercy and good pleasure. Blessed are they who through the administration of His Word and Spirit have learned to hunger and thirst after righteousness and have received this Gift as a freely-given Gift from heaven and may say with Paul: “Thanks be unto God for His Unspeakable Gift.”
For unto us a Child is born. He has not come in the likeness of a man such as He at one time revealed Himself to Abraham, Lot, Jacob, etc., but as a real person with body and soul. He took upon Him flesh and blood from the virgin Mary and has become like unto His brethren in all things, sin excepted. As every highpriest was taken from among men and every redeemer had to be a kinsman, so likewise the Messiah.
Only in this way can He stand in the place of sinners and fulfill the demand of the law: “The soul that sinneth it shall die.” Only in this way can be fulfilled: “He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities.”
He had to come as a child into the world and not as a grown person, to begin His mediatorial work from the beginning. What is the basis for this? In what David had said, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” Our past goes back to Paradise. We come into the world, filled with original sin and totally depraved by it.
But this Child is born by a super-natural conception which freed Him from the guilt and pollution of Adam, so that with His guiltless and perfect holiness He can cover before God the sins with which His people are conceived and born.
O eternal wonder of grace! He bridged the infinite distance which exists between God and the sinner. Have you ever experienced this separation? It is so necessary, because otherwise this Child will never have value for us.
There are so many who make a deceiving determination of this distance. They believe that it is not so great and that they can bridge it themselves, because they do not intentionally do evil and give to everyone his due.
There are others who believe that this distance is bridged by Holy Baptism. They consider baptism as a bridge by which to approach to God, if Jesus will but help them. But the one as well as the other is an invention of a deceitful heart. It is a result of underestimating the separation and an indication that they have never experienced it and are yet totally blind for it.
What a privilege for that people who have learned that for them all bridges are closed and all their ways run dead; that the Child JESUS calls unto them: “I am the Way!” Those who have heard and learned it from the Father, “Come unto Me.”
If the Saviour had come in all the splendor of His Godly Majesty and Glory, who could then have stood before Him? Who then would ever dare to approach unto Him? But now the eternal God has become Man, yes, even a Child. He came so low that He was willing to be born in the deepest humiliation. He came into a stable, in a manger, in a food trough for animals. No, Mary and Joseph didn’t intend this, but it was the will of this Child and the good pleasure of His Father. This already proclaims to us what He Himself later testified when he was walking upon earth: “For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which is lost.”
Now to everyone for whom it has become a lost case, (and may the Lord give that we may once celebrate Christmas in this way) the glorious message comes from heaven: “Unto us a Child is born.”
“US”. How much is contained in this! It includes all of God’s children of all ages and places. They are not standing alone, they are firstfruits, but together form one people. Their salvation is a common, that is to say, a shared salvation. But it is applied to each personally. This personal application is of great importance in the life of each of us.
Therefore the question is so appropriate: Do you, do I belong to them? Who are they? They are the poor in spirit, those who possess no good and can do no good. They are poor in righteousness, in faith, in love, in prayer, in experience and in duties. They are so dependent upon the bestowing of and the operations of the Holy Spirit, and also experience, “Without Me ye can do nothing.” They have only guilt. Looking within themselves all courage fails. That this Child is born for others they do not doubt. They can become holy jealous of those who may speak of the meaning this Child has for them, and what they may have found in Him. The great question for them is: Is this Child also born for me? That would be the greatest wonder, because never has anyone done so much evil against so much good.
O sinner, listen to what the angel had to say to Joseph. “Thou shalt call His Name Jesus; for He shall save His people from their sins.” This Child was willing to be born for sinners, for great sinners, for vile loathsome sinners. As certainly as He was born in a stable, so certain it is that He is willing to be born in the hearts of sinners.
Those who cannot live without Him do not have to remain without Him, for He receives sinners and eats with them.
BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
When the month of December appears on the calendar, we realize that the end of the year is near at hand. The little word “end” is to be noticed more often throughout the year — the end of each day, each week, each month, the end of a vacation, of a visit, of the school year, of each season, etc. We also see the end of life in many around us — for older people and some younger ones. And then a person is at the beginning of eternity. It is a serious thought.
But also in December we hear much about the Child born in Bethlehem many years ago. The birth was announced to the shepherds in the field not far from Bethlehem. It was told them, “A Savior is born,” and it was a message which touched their hearts. With haste they went to Bethlehem to see that which had been told them. “Good tidings of great joy” were declared unto them, and when a person is in deep trouble, in distress, in great danger, what a good tiding it is to hear that a savior is come.
Is such a message of importance to us? Are we in trouble, in distress, in danger? Do we need a Savior? As we are born into the world, we know not of this need. Perhaps we soon realize our need of a father’s and a mother’s care in providing food, clothing, shelter, the need of friends, yes, many daily needs. But do we need a Savior? Unless the Lord causes us to know of this need, we do not seek for a Savior. May the Lord teach us this — so that the message of Christmas will stir our hearts to cry after Him Who was born in Bethlehem.
The questions this month will provide some examples of His saving power. The first letters will spell out six words found in Hebrews 7.

And now to answer the letters which we have received:
ASTRID GRISNICH - Astrid, your letter is the first one this time. If you answer the October quiz, your name does not appear until December, and even January if you are late. So it does take some time. We have had just a very little snow so far, but in the months of December through February we usually have quite a bit.
LEONA VANDEN BRINK - We are quite well, Leona, but quite busy. I am glad that your November blizzards did not come too far east. The weather can be very different only fifty or one hundred miles away from us, and what a variety there is throughout the world, all directed by the mighty power of God.
KAREN, ERIKA, AND DEBRA VANDEN BEUKEL - We have not heard from Anita Schouten this month, but we hope too that the Lord has given some recovery. When we consider the healing power displayed by the Lord Jesus while on earth, we know that nothing is too wonderful or too hard for Him.
JOEL ARNOLDUSSEN - Since you have been studying about John Wycliffe, Joel, you probably know many things about him. What do you think was the main reason he is still remembered today? Not much good can be said of some persons of past centuries, but that is not true of Wycliffe.
REINEKE BERTRAM - There are other metaphors in the Bible, Reineke. Can you think of some? How good it is when our lessons at school help us to better understand the things of God’s Word. There were some good results, but also some disappointments in our elections. As you mentioned, there is One Who rules over all things.
PIETER DEN DEKKER - How long are you on the bus, Pieter? Some boys and girls are on the bus almost an hour in the morning and the same again in the afternoon. Do you like school? I know that it means a certain amount of work, but I don’t think that a little work bothers you.
RIA DROOGENDYK - I notice there are two letters from you, Ria. There is no age limit for those who answer the Bible quiz, so you do not have to stop. If you do want to make up a quiz and send it in, I will certainly see what I can do with it. I usually make them myself, but once in a while someone sends one.
NICOLE ARNOLDUSSEN - Congratulations on your birthday, Nicole. Your birthday is just one day before mine. Each birthday is a year provided us by the Lord, but also a reminder that we moved forward another year in our journey upon this earth. Young people do not always think of this, but neither do older ones.
RONALD BERTRAM - How is Mr. Groen, Ronald? If you speak with him, give him our greetings, and also your family. A few days ago we had our Thanksgiving Day in the United States. When is Thanksgiving observed in New Zealand? Every day would be a Thanksgiving Day if we would take notice of the many blessings which the Lord grants us.
JANET KARDUX - Did you notice where the answer to the 23rd question of last month was found, Janet? We had heard about Mr. Wierks. He will be missed by his family, by the congregation, but also in the Synodical meetings. This and the sickness of others are callings to all of us. Do you think of it at times?
KEN DEN DEKKER - Your letter is the last one, Ken. How is school going for you? What special things are you studying about this year? Just in nature there is much to study — birds, plants, trees, flowers, soil, etc. And then there are many other subjects.
Many thanks, young people, for the replies to the quiz. A question was asked regarding collecting used postage stamps for the benefit of the mission. It was our impression that some of the schools were doing this, and therefore did not continue to request it.
Since this is the last issue for the year 1984, we would like to express our wishes for all of you that the Lord may remember and bless you in the coming year, supplying your daily needs both for soul and body. The Lord Jesus once said, “One thing is needful,” and may that especially be granted you, also in the Christmas season.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

HARVEST
See the corn again in ear!
How the fields and valleys smile,
Harvest now is drawing near,
To repay the farmer’s toil.
Should the Lord secure the crop,
It will give us needful food;
In His mercy is our hope,
We have sinned, but He is good.
Let the praise be all the Lord’s,
As the benefit is ours,
He, in season, still affords
Kindly heat and gentle showers;
By His care the produce thrives
Waving o’er the furrowed lands;
And when harvest time arrives,
Ready for the reaper stands.
Thus in barren hearts He sows,
Precious seeds of heavenly joy;
Sin and hell in vain oppose,
None can grace’s crop destroy;
Threatened oft yet still it blooms,
After many changes past,
Death the reaper, when he comes,
Finds it fully ripe at last.

BIBLICAL INFLUENCE
Three ladies in Westminster, England, called upon a gentleman, asking him if he would kindly subscribe to a Bible Society, but he gave them a positive refusal, saying he believed the Bible to have been manufactured by priests. His wife also was solicited. She was more civil than her husband, but told the ladies that her husband would not suffer a Bible to be in the house. She could do nothing for them, and they went away.
Some months later they called again. The gentleman and his wife again gave them a positive refusal. They asked if he had any objection to their speaking to the servants. “Oh no,” said the gentleman. The servants were called. Several of them were willing to subscribe. Among them was one called Jane. She quickly paid for an owned her Bible.
In a few weeks after Jane had received her Bible, her mistress noticed a great change in her. When speaking about Jane to one of her friends, the mistress said, “Formerly Jane was a pretty good servant, but trifling and giddy; but since she has that Bible, she is much more serious and steady, and a better servant.”
A few months after this, Jane had an accident and broke her leg. She was taken to a hospital. The first Sabbath after she returned home from the hospital, she asked her mistress if she could go out for a while, and her request was granted. She continued asking leave, at the same hour for many weeks, and her mistress began to wonder what could be her object.
Her mistress was determined she would know, and when Jane went out again the next Sunday, she took a coach and directed the coachman to follow the girl, pointing her out to him. The coachman went after her until she came to the same hospital, where her leg had healed. She entered the hospital and went directly to the ladies ward; her mistress following some distance behind.
At the other end of the ward the mistress saw Jane kneeling down, with a Bible before her on a chair, reading. She read two chapters and concluded her little service with an affecting prayer to the Almighty, begging that He would bless His own Word, and also restore the health of the patients before her.
Jane’s mistress was much affected, but quickly retired before Jane got up. She went home and met her husband at the door. “My dear,” said she, “if Jane ever wants leave to go out when I am absent, be sure you grant it. She is a servant of the Most High God.”
Jane’s conduct produced such a change in both mistress and master, that the mistress immediately subscribed to the Society, and became one of the most active members on the committee. The husband, who had not a single copy of the Sacred Scriptures in his house, put one in every room, and himself became a member of the committee of one of the Westminster Bible Societies.
Whether Jane’s mistress and master were converted, we do not know, but there was a marked difference in their attitude towards the Word of God, and the influence of this surely must have been perceived throughout the house.
Jane’s accident was a blessing in disguise, for while confined to the hospital, it gave her time to read her precious Bible. Not only for herself, but for the other patients as well.
Though only a poor servant girl, she showed marks of grace; her treasure was in heaven. And see how kindly she returned Sunday after Sunday to read the Bible to the lady patients. And not only to read to them but also to pray with and for them: and who knows the influence for good it had upon the souls of these elderly women?
AND WAS SUBJECT UNTO THEM (Luke 2:51)
Are you sometimes tempted to be disobedient to your father and mother, or to those whom God has set over you in their place? Do you ever feel it hard when they tell you not to do something you wish, or to do something you do not like? Did you become angry and tried to go on doing what you were forbidden, or refused to do what you were told? I am afraid that every child who reads this will remember some time when he or she sinned in this way. (“Some time,” did I say? More like “Many times,” you will agree). Temptation often comes from Satan, and disobedience is one of the sins he gets children to fall into most easily. And it is a great sin in the sight of God Who says in His Word, “Honour thy father and thy mother,” and “Children, obey your parents in all things.”
But if you recollect such faults, I hope you can also remember being sorry afterwards, and how you asked forgiveness of father and mother, and then on your knees asked God to pardon you for Christ’s sake. And now, should you be tempted again (and temptations in plenty can rise out of your own heart), I want you to think of the words which form the title to this little article. Jesus was subject to His parents. He was the Son of God, yet as a boy in this world, He was obedient, subject to His mother, Mary, and to Joseph who stood in the place of an earthly father to Him. He gave up his own will to obey them in all things, and He did this for two reasons.
1. As the Saviour of sinners, He had to obey the law of God for them as well as bear the punishment of their sins. So, when a child, the Lord Jesus did what a child ought to do, alid one of the great laws for them is, “Children, obey your parents.” Therefore when children believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and confess their sins before the Father, He looks not at their sinfulness but at the obedience unto death of Christ and forgives.
2. Jesus also was subject to Mary and Joseph for an example to us. It is the duty of all who believe in Him to walk in His steps, and try to be like Him in all things. It is a good rule when we are not sure if something is right for us to do, to consider, Would Jesus have done this? Now, young children cannot follow His example in many things which He did when He grew up to be a man, but they can try to be like the child Jesus. And here is one thing, to be gladly subject and obedient to all that their parents or teachers desire.
Think of this whenever you feel your own will rising up against the will of those older and wiser than yourself, who have the right from God to direct you. And ask the Saviour to help you to trust in Him.

THE BIRTHDAY OF THE KING
John Brown of Haddington, in his last illness, having heard the bells ringing, and understanding it to be the King’s birthday, said, “O, blessed be God, however worthy our Sovereign be, we have a better King’s birthday to celebrate. Unto us was born, in the city of David, a Saviour who is Christ the Lord! On account of that event the gospel bells have been sounding for ages past, and they will ring louder still. O the Saviour! the Son of God our Saviour! O His Kindness, His Kindness! A Saviour, a husband of sinners to me!”
