THE CONFESSION OF FAITH ARTICLE XXVII
Of the Catholic Christian Church
Our confession now explains the doctrine of the church. In article 27 it speaks about the essence of the church, article 28 stresses that everyone is bound to join the church, article 29 gives the marks of the true church, and articles 30 through 32 deal with the government of the church. Following these are articles about the sacraments and the latter events.
The doctrine of the church is the last part of the confession; the more purely the former articles are explained, the better we will understand the doctrine of the church. We should keep in mind that it is not the church which decides about the Truth and about religion, but it is the Truth which decides about the church. That which is to be understood regarding the church is at once explained in our article, for it gives the definition of the essence of the church as follows: “We believe and profess, one catholic or universal Church, which is an holy congregation of true christian believers.”
There are many who claim that they are the church of Christ, but I am afraid that it is totally different than here defined. If we see the condition of the church in our days, then Jeremiah’s frame befits us when he cried out, “Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!” We frequently hear and can read in the newspapers about born-again christians. They live in worldly activities and dishonor God’s Name; they are on radio and television, take part in sports on Sunday, etc. This is not of the Lord, but is a deceit of the devil to try to convince us that also in this way one can be saved.
Many call themselves christians, but they even miss the knowledge of the Truth. The name of Christ is used more than ever before in our countries, but I fear that more and more we are becoming heathen countries, where there is no room for the Lord and His service. Sin is lived out more brutally than before. Is it then lost, completely lost, for the church? No, against the destroying work of sin and Satan there stands the work of grace, which builds up and binds together. By grace we are not only restored in communion with God, but also become members of the body of Christ, which is the true church, as our present article informs us.
We find the word “church” in the Bible in many places. In Greek it is “ekklesia”, which means that which is called. When we use the word church, we think so often of the building, but that is not the meaning. It is the people which are chosen from eternity, bought by the blood of Christ, and called at God’s time by Word and Spirit. In Isaiah 48:12 there is written, “Hearken unto Me, O Jacob and Israel, My called.” Thus the “Church” is called with a holy calling, after God’s own pleasure and grace, and is also designated the Body and the Bride of Christ.
The church has many other names in the Bible, but there is none so significant as “The Body of Christ”. If we are not incorporated in Christ, then we do not belong to the Church. It all means, however, that if we are incorporated in Christ and the Lord has begun the good work, then, regardless how small and insignificant we are in our own eyes and how often it is contested whether it is of the Lord, we are also partakers of His grace and merits. By the name, Body of Christ, we learn that all the members are organically bound to Christ, Who is the Head of the Church. No matter how far God’s children are separated in time and place, together they form the body of Christ, as I Corinthians 12:13 teaches, “By one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.”
The Church is also called the Bride of Christ. In former days a bride was bought for a price, and it may also be truly said of the Church that she is bought for a price; they are the ransomed of the Lord. It would make this article too extensive if all the names were explained in detail, but it is a great comfort for the church when something of this may be explained to us for our own heart in the opening of the Word.
In this article we read, “We believe and profess, one catholic or universal Church, which is an holy congregation of true Christian believers, all expecting their salvation in Jesus Christ, being washed by His blood, sanctified and sealed by the Holy Ghost.” It is not written here that we believe in one catholic church. That would be the doctrine of Rome, who say that they only can give salvation and that outside of the church of Rome there is no salvation. They believe that faith in the church is of the same importance as is faith in God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. God’s children believe in God, but not in a church which claims that salvation is only within their walls.
This is, of course, not written to give us freedom to go to any church. No, we are responsible to join a church where the Truth is brought before us. It is often said that the Lord will not ask us from what church we have come when we die, but this is done to cover up the fact that one belongs to a church where the truth is not taught. Herein we are fully responsible before the Lord! God’s children profess and believe one catholic or universal church built of lively stones, which means that reprobates don’t belong to this church and, before their conversion, the elect were also outsiders.
Is it not a terrible thought to be all the days of our life in the church, but not of the church? May it drive us out to the Lord, asking of Him that which we need in this respect and crying for mercy.
Sometimes there is spoken of the ‘visible’ and ‘invisible’ church. These expressions we find first in the writings of Luther in the year 1521; Zwingli used the same words in 1523, and they are also found in Calvin’s Institutes. It has become a familiar expression in the church, but is often misinterpreted. It does not mean that there are two churches, because we know that there is but one church. “My dove, My unde-filed is but one.” The church is invisible in their hidden spiritual life with God, but they are visible in their meetings, confession and administration of the sacraments. By baptism and confession their children come into an external relationship to the church, but without regeneration they are not living members.
When the church is spoken about, it is very well possible that you will say that it is a difficult subject. Yes, I know it is not the easiest topic to write about, although, if we have some knowledge of the truth, it will then not be too hard. If I should ask, “Are you converted?” it is probably a clear language for you; by our up-
bringing we know what it means. But when we know this, then we also know whether we are a member of the church whereof this article speaks or whether we are strangers of it. When we miss grace, we miss everything. I hope there may come a time in your life that you will realize, under the administration of the Holy Ghost, what it means to not belong to the Body of Christ. Going to church, but not of the church, will then become unbearable!

BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls:
The last month of the year is again here, and we think again of that event which is commemorated by our churches on the 25th of December. What reason there was for the shepherds to praise God for that which they had heard and seen. And there is still much reason for us to do the same.
Although the events which took place so many years ago are well-known to us, it must still be a matter of great wonder that the Lord has provided a way for sinners to be saved, and that in such a marvellous way. Every detail of the events which took place was under the direction of the Lord of heaven and earth, as can be seen as we study the history once again. The quiz will probably be an easy one, but we hope each of us will be given to see something of the great importance of those things which took place at that time.
The first letters of our answers will spell out five words spoken by the angel to the shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem. The sign which was given from the Lord to King Ahaz by Isaiah was: “A virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall
call his name__________.”
Elisabeth said to Mary, “________ art thou among women.”
Speaking about John, the angel said to Zacharias, “To make __________a people prepared for the Lord.”
Jesus__________in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
In what city did Joseph and Mary live after returning from Egypt with the child Jesus?
The heavenly host praising God above the fields near Bethlehem sang, “__________to God in the highest.”
The angel said to Joseph in a dream, “Herod will seek the __________child to destroy him.”
The wise men, being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, departed into their__________country another way.
The angel had said to Joseph, “Joseph, thou son of David,
fear not to take__________thee Mary thy wife.”
What was the name of the angel which spoke to Zacharias in the temple?
The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall__________thee.”
After baptizing Jesus, John saw the heavens________, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him.”
Zacharias said that the Lord “hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant __________.”
There came a voice from heaven after Jesus was baptized, saying, “__________art My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.”
Mary said, “He hath scattered the proud in the________of their hearts.”
An angel also appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “They are__________which sought the young child’s life.” Isaiah had said, “Of the________
of His government and peace there shall be no end.”
Of John the Baptist we read, “He was_________that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.”
The scribes told Herod what the prophet had written about Bethlehem, saying, “Out of thee shall come a___________that shall rule My people Israel.”
Who came by the Spirit into the temple on the day Jesus was brought there by His parents?

And now to answer the letters
which we have again received— NEIL STAM -I see there are two letters from you, Neil. How was your report card? Eli had to tell his sons, “It is no good report that I hear.” We hope the parents in our schools don’t have to say that to their sons and daughters. Have you had any snow? CARRIE WITVOET-They tell me that goats like to eat lots of different things, Carrie. What do your goats eat? In the Bible we read quite often about goats. King Jehoshaphat received 7,700 billy goats, the Bible tells us. Do you know from whom he received them?
JOHN WESDYK - Crawling up the steps in Rome did not earn Martin Luther any thing, did it, John? We, too, must also learn that we cannot earn God’s blessings by our works. Do you know the name of a person who did earn heaven—not for himself, but for others?
TRUDY VANDER WAAL - We have had only a few snow flakes so far, Trudy, but it can soon change. Would you like to be a school teacher? It is good that some like teaching, and others like nursing, farming, carpentry, and all the other occupations. REINEKE BERTRAM - How many boys and girls attend your school this year, Reineke? Is your church membership also growing? You asked who wrote the book of Judges. It is said that this book was probably written by Samuel.
JONAS ARNOLDUSSEN - It was nice to receive a letter from you, Jonas. Congratulations on the new baby sister. It sounds as if you had quite a bit of snow already. Do write again. And say Hello to your grandparents, your parents, and also your teacher at school.
ANNETTE BRINK - We are quite well, Annette. I am sure every year book has a few mistakes in it, but we of course notice those of our own school. Who is your teacher this year? Is your school work keeping you quite busy, or don’t you have much homework?
DEBRA WITVOET-We have had a nice fall season, Debra. Most of the leaves have fallen from the trees, and so we can see that winter will soon be here. Do you still have more chickens, or did you butcher all of them? I didn’t realize you had so many animals.
SHERYL DEN HOED - Thank you for your letter, Sheryl, but also for your picture. I can see that you are learning many new things at school. How big is the ark you are building? Noah spent a long time building the ark in order to provide a place for all the animals. Do you know how long? TREENA KOCKEN-We hope that most of the books have been received by this time, Treena. There was some delay because all of the books were not available at the time. Do you like to read? Do you have a library in your school? HILDA VANDEN HOEK - Did the school sale turn out quite well, Hilda? Were there lots of customers? The schools have received much support from the school sales. What are you studying about in school at this time? After being away from school for such a long time, we are always glad to hear what is being taught. ANITA SCHOUTEN - It is rather difficult to move to a country where a different language is spoken. How old were you, Anita, when you moved to New Zealand? Or were you born there? Young people usually learn the language more quickly than older ones do. KAREN WESDYK - Karen, your letter will be the last one for this time, as it looks as if we have reached the bottom of the pile. The months go by so quickly, and we often lack time to do all the things we would like to do. Do you like school?
To all the boys and girls, thanks for your replies to the quiz. As mentioned in one of the letters, the books did not get sent out as promptly as usual this time. If you have not yet received the book you requested, we are quite certain it should still arrive. This finishes another year of the Bible quizzes. We hope you have learned much, and that the Word of God will be brought within your hearts by the Holy Spirit. May the Lord remember us together in the New Year, giving us those blessings which we need both for this life and for eternity.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
MAKING CONFESSION AND THE OFFICES
The offices have been instituted by the Lord in His church. It was so already in the Old Testament. Think only of the prophets, priests and Levites. If we read the forms for ordination of ministers, elders and deacons, we see the Biblical institution of it. The tasks of the offices are clearly described, but also the duty of the members. Each minister, elder and deacon must one day give an account before the Lord regarding his work in the congregation. This is therefore a personal matter. Fortunately there are officebearers who often feel their unworthiness and incapability in their office. If that drives them unto the Lord, He can give them enabling grace. This the Lord also frequently bestows.
We must observe that they are and remain men. The Lord did not place these offices upon the shoulders of angels, but upon the shoulders of men. They are men with faults; even though they may have much grace, they remain men. I believe that we can best have patience with these faults when we see our own faults. I do not mean by this to speak well of sin. Censure is applicable as well to officebearers if they err in doctrine and life as to members. If we view the officebearers in the light of God’s Word, then we see them as they are, namely, as placed over us.
The officebearers have a ministering task in the congregation, and at the same time are rulers in the name of Christ. This ministering and ruling task is especially the task of ministers and elders. The installation form compares the ministers and elders with the priests and Levites in the Old Testament. The Levites were coworkers of the Priests. Nevertheless the offices were and remained separated. The Levites were not permitted to do the work of the priests—for example, they were not permitted to burn the incense or go into the holy place. Neither could they go as the High Priest did with the blood into the Holy of holies.
The work of deacons is to practice the work of mercy; that is to say that their work is to provide for the poor. We can read this in Acts 6. The Lord speaks of the offices in His Word; see Romans 12:8 and II Corinthians 9:7. In the ordination of ministers and elders, there is this difference-ministers are ordained with laying on of hands and elders are not. The laying on of hands takes place but once, at the time of ordination in the office. It has occurred that, in a time of need, a minister was not ordained when changing locations. This happened when Voetius came to Heusden.
A baptized member is also a member of the congregation, but their membership still rests in the parents membership. Baptized members who misbehave must be admonished and, if they obstinately persevere, must be dismissed. This is different with confessing members. For them the churches admonishment and discipline is involved, which has three steps. But before we go into this further, there is something else.
The Lord requires of us as confessing members that we should honor and esteem the offices. The form for ordination says, “Esteem them very highly for their work’s sake.”
Examples in the Bible point to the esteem for the offices and God’s favor for this. Elkanah and Hannah esteemed the old high priest Eli. They certainly were not in agreement with his laxity, and this also cost Eli dearly. David esteemed Saul because he was the Lord’s anointed. Saul was a rejected one, nevertheless David did not dare to stretch out his hand against Saul, and the Lord blessed it. Saul was eternally lost.
Also the Lord Jesus did not reject the offices, but esteemed them. He said to the ten lepers, “Go show yourselves unto the priests.” The same could also be said of the apostles.
(to be continued)
HALF
I want to write about the halves of things, and will try to tell you when it is good and when it is bad to divide a thing in half, and also when to do or say half of anything is right, and when it is wrong. I don’t mean things we use only, but duties and things we have to do. For instance, half an orange or half an apple, is very nice when given to a companion, and in that way we give pleasure to two instead of one. But if we give half a shoe, or half a glove, it is of no use even for one person; so some things are all the better, and some all the worse for being halved.
And it is a very nice thing to go halves or shares in anything, such as the cleaning of a room or care of a garden, or some other work. Yet, should your half be done first, I hope you don’t just go off without offering to help your companion who may be slower or not so well practised as yourself. It is right also to stop half-way when you are not sure that what you are going to do is quite right. It is good to stop half-way and turn back if you have forgotten your prayers or any regular duty. It is well to stop half-way in any unkind or hasty speech or act; of course it is best not to begin to give way to angry words or deeds at all, but it is much better to stop half way if you should begin. Then, if anyone has offended you, or hurt you, or ruined your books or toys, and is sorry for it, be sure you meet him half-way in his repentance and thus show that you are willing to forgive.
You must be ready to share and take part in other’s troubles or distress, and this you will do best by thinking how you would feel if it had happened to you, and then try to feel nearly as much for another. And I will tell you what this sharing or halving is called in God’s Holy Word. It is called “bearing one another’s burdens,” and those who do so from a right spirit are said to “fulfill the law of Christ.”
But, as I said before, there are many cases in which it would be wrong to share or half anything, and I shall now tell you some of these. First, then, it is wrong to give half of anything we owe to God, such as half our hearts when we are worshipping Him in church or praying to Him at home. It is wrong, I mean, to think half of God, and half of other’s things. We must not give half the reverence and attention, or half the time we ought to bestow on God and our duties to Him.
Next, it is a very bad thing to tell half the truth when we ought to tell it all. It is as bad as a complete falsehood, for it has the same effect of deceiving the hearer. I once knew a small boy who had this habit. He would say, he “thought so”, when he knew it and was quite sure. He would say, “maybe”, instead of “yes, I did,” or “I don’t remember” when he did remember.
One day this boy and his brother were going to the seashore to gather pretty shells to decorate the pond in the garden. They did so, and our young friend brought back a fine basket full, thinking what a happy time he would have washing and sorting them. His aunt, however, and for some good reason, decided that this would have to wait unto the next day. In a little while the boys asked to go upstairs. “Oh yes,” said the aunt, “but what for?” “Oh, only to get a book and clean our room.” But from something the other brother said, their aunt suspected that the reason given was not true. She soon found out that the chief reason was to clean the shells, and as this was not the first time she had had to speak about his practice of keeping back half the truth, she was obliged to punish her nephew, and pretty severely. Do you know how? She made him throw all his pretty shells back into the sea. I think it made him determined to tell the whole truth in the future.
Another thing is that it will not do to stop halfway and think when we have determined to beg pardon for what we have done wrong. We must not acknowledge half our fault, but the whole of it. When we have arranged to do some good or kind action, we must not stop half way because we find it more difficult or troublesome than we at first thought. We must never think that a promise is fulfilled when we do half of it. We must not take half the credit of a thing when we have done only a small share, and, of course, you must give full credit to those who help you in anything, and not talk as if you had done it all yourself.
Never be satisfied with a lesson half learned, or a task half done. Never leave your books or work half finished. Never wish for the whole or even half of anything that does not belong to you, and never look as if you wished your friend or companion to share what he has with you. There are many other ways in which it is wrong to divide our duties, or put half for the whole, but I hope you will now see more clearly when to give half of a thing is good, and when it is wrong.
I will finish with the story of a man and his wife who told half the truth and in so doing told a lie. In the time of the apostles it was common for the new Christians to devote or give up property to God’s service. Having done so, it would be as wrong to want it back again as it would be for you to wish that you had back again what you put into the church collection plate last Sunday. Well, after this couple had given a piece of land to the Lord, it was sold, and the price given to the apostles. But in fact it was only part of the price that they handed over, for they had changed their minds and decided to keep part. A terrible judgment came on them both for attempting to deceive the Church, and for lying to God. Let us take care not to do half of anything when we ought to do all. (You can read about these people in Acts 5).
Above all, when the Lord says to you, “My son, give Me thine heart,” ask of Him grace to enable you to give Him, not a half or any small part, but it all. Less will not do if you are to be saved from sin, and to take delight in doing God’s will.

GOSPEL LIGHT
Come, set your faces Zion-ward,
The sacred road inquire;
And let a union to the Lord
Be henceforth your desire.
The Gospel shines to give you light;
No longer, then, delay;
The Spirit waits to guide you right,
And Jesus is the way.
O Lord, regard thy people’s pray’r,
Thy promise now fulfil;
And young and old by grace prepare
To dwell on Zion’s hill.
Newton
THE GOSPEL VOICE
Lord, prepare us by thy grace!
Soon we must resign our breath;
And our souls be call’d, to pass
Through the iron gate of death:
Let us now our day improve,
Listen to the Gospel voice;
Seek the things that are above,
Scorn the world’s pretended joys.
