YOUTH CONFERENCE — CHILLIWACK, BRITISH COLUMBIA

August 9, 1980

The conference was opened with the singing of Psalter 322, followed by Scripture reading and prayer by Rev. Verhoef. He besought the Lord’s indispensable blessing upon that which was to be heard and spoken in that day in the hearts of all in attendance. A word of welcome was expressed by him, and he pointed out the need of the Lord and His Word in the lives of young and old. The Lord has so graciously granted His Word “for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” and throughout the day that Word was the basis of the addresses given.

Elder G. Moerdyk of Kalamazoo then spoke about the topic of “Questions”. Many questions are being asked today, especially by young people and therefore the subject is an important one. Covered in this address were the questions: Are all questions good? Are all questions permissable? Are all questions answerable? He encouraged the questions of young people and directed them to especially seek answers from their parents, from God’s people and from their church leaders, but above all other, to ask and pray for wisdom in all things from the Lord.

After a short break for refreshments, Elder J. Den Hoed of Sunnyside spoke about “Jonah” and the instruction given by his life and history to young people. How evident it is that there is no running away from God in our lives, but that His power and control extends over all things in both natural and spiritual events. An opportunity was then given to submit questions to the two speakers, and they answered as many as possible in the time allotted.

The morning session was closed with prayer by Mr. Den Hoed and a blessing asked for the noon meal. The meal was provided in the church fellowship hall by the home economics class of the Chilliwack school and was enjoyed by all. When the meeting reconvened, Mr. Moerdyk read Matthew 6:19–34 and offered prayer, asking of the Lord a blessing upon the meal and the further needs of those present.

The speaker of the afternoon was Elder L. DenBoer of Chilliwack, who spoke about “The Abasement of Samson”. He brought out the instructions given us in the life and experiences of Samson, especially at the rock of Etam and at Lehi, the place where he had been enabled to defeat the Philistines with the use of a jawbone. Again an opportunity was given for questions, which he then answered.

Deacon D. Moore of Chilliwack then led in a Bible quiz in which all attending took part. It pointed out our need for a continual study of the Bible with regard to names, places and events. In concluding the program of the day, four young people of Chilliwack provided some selections on musical instruments in the fellowship hall, and the conference was then closed with prayer by Mr. Den Boer.

There were many young people present from the other churches of Lethbridge, Sunnyside, Port Alberni, Fort McLeod, and Lynden as well as a few from more distant congregations. It was good to see so many gathered together for the purpose of instruction in their daily lives based upon God’s precious Word. May the Lord add His blessing upon it.
