A PERIODICAL FOR YOUNG AND OLD
O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust II Timothy 6:20
THE CONFESSION OF FAITH ARTICLE XV
Of Original Sin
Our previous article spoke of the creation and fall of man. God had created man after His own image - in knowledge, righteousness and holiness. In this state of innocence man lived in the immediate communion and friendship of God. Although he was created in perfection, he could attain to greater heights, but room was also left for sin.
Man had accepted the covenant of works, and this was not forced upon him in any way. We all know the contents of this covenant. The Lord required man to keep the covenant of works, which consisted in not eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. It was not a difficult thing, knowing that our first parents had ample of everything which they needed for their daily lives. Upon obedience the Lord promised life eternal. If he were obedient for a certain time, then he could not sin anymore. (This is the general explanation of the reformed theologians. However, there are a few exceptions who teach a little differently about it. They think that it does not speak of a certain time of obedience, but that the world would enjoy life without death as long as they were obedient. They say that eternal life is only promised in the covenant of grace. See Romans 6:2 and Ephesians 2:8-9.) Man was threatened with death if he were disobedient.
Summed up in a few words -man could attain to greater heights, but if they sinned, they would lose their glorious state. Many questions are often asked relating to the fall. “Didn’t God lay a snare for man?” Another will ask, “Why was there such a tree in Paradise of which we could take of the forbidden fruit?” Or, “Why did God permit Satan to come and speak by means of the serpent? If this had not happened, then there would be no problems at all!” Do you know what I feel in these questions? All is spoken against the Lord as to what He has done, and nothing is mentioned about ourselves as to what we have done. The foolishness of man is evident - we try to lay the blame upon the Lord for what we have done!
No, God did not spread a snare to entangle His creation. He had endowed man with understanding and will in distinction of the irrational and inanimate creation. How could the glory of man, the jewel of creation, be fully revealed? Only if he would show in his life that the service of God was his greatest delight. The only way this would be shown was in leaving the choice to man, setting before him two ways - to freely serve the Lord, or to be without the Lord! We have seen what a terrible choice was made; it was to leave the Lord. The crown is fallen from our head. Willingly we rejected salvation and communion with God. Woe unto us that have sinned!
The most terrible thing on earth is sin, which is rebellion against God, resisting His commandment, and going our way without the Lord and with Satan instead. God’s will was revealed in the covenant of works, but by our disobedience we showed our enmity against the Lord. In our deeds we said to God, “I know Thee not, I honor Thee not, and I fear Thee not!” We reversed the first commandment, making it, “I am the Lord, my own God, and I will not serve another God beside myself.”
How terrible is the consequence of this sin, bringing the greatest misery and discord. The whole creation sighs! Great parts of this fruitful world became deserts; the cleansing winds sometimes change into destroying hurricanes; refreshing rains become damaging floods. Because the unity is lost between God and man, the whole creation sighs under the curse of sin. And yet all these things are of secondary importance, even as terrible as they are. Is there something worse? Yes, we have left the Lord, and now we are without Him. This is worse than death!
So often we complain about the consequences of sin, but so seldom do we hear a true lamentation that we have sinned against the Lord. If this were heard more often, we would then speak differently about the fall and about original sin. Place is then made for the explanation given in this fifteenth article about original sin, where we read, “We believe that, through the disobedience of Adam, original sin is extended to all mankind; which is a corruption of the whole nature, and an hereditary disease, wherewith infants themselves are infected even in their mother’s womb, and which produceth in man all sorts of sin, being in him as a root thereof.”
There is spoken here of Adam’s disobedience. Eve is the mother of all living and Adam is our father, but he is the head of the covenant of works. Adam represented the whole human race, the Lord having made the covenant with him, and not with Eve. In him we stood or fell. The special promise of the covenant was life in continual communion with God, and the threat of the covenant was death. Could Adam be our representative in this? The imputation of sin is not because he is our natural father, but because he is the representing head of the covenant of works. There is no injustice here; he received a special place of the Lord, so that he could speak and act for the whole human race.
It is the same in the other covenant whereof Christ is the Head. All that He has done is for His people whom He represented, for those who are in the covenant of grace. This is the doctrine of God’s Word, before which we must bow. We read in Romans 5:12, “By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” It speaks of original sin. All have sinned, which is a deed. It makes it clear that no one is excluded. In the same chapter Paul teaches that by the sin of Adam, death obtained power over all men. In Adam all persons sinned, and in Christ those which are the elect receive grace.
In verse 19 of this chapter we read, “By one man’s disobedience many were made sinners.” This is to be in state a sinner, to be with and in the sin of Adam. How does this first sin become our sin? By imputation and heredity. Sin is guilt before God, and the guilt of Adam’s breaking of the covenant is imputed to all men. The guilt of his other sins which he committed in the 930 years that he lived are not imputed to all men. After the fall he was no longer representing the human race; this was for his account only.
Thus all men have sinned in Adam by this original sin; we all are guilty before God, as we all accepted in Adam the requirements, the promises and the punishments of the covenant of works. I know it is only a few words about the imputation of sin, but I hope that there will come a time for each of us that it will become our personal experience to know what this imputation means. Then I become Adam, and I have taken of the forbidden fruit. Then we come as a covenant-breaker before God, under the administration of the Holy Ghost. Then we will acknowledge in truth and uprightness that the crown is fallen from our head because of our own sin, our own willful disobedience.

BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
From time to time we see the sacrament of baptism administered in the church to young children of one or two months old. Then-names are then entered in the church books as baptized members. Years later, if we wish to do so, we can find out in these books the date of our baptism. Also, as we grow up, we can say, “I am baptized”.
Do we ever think what it means to be baptized? It would take too much space to explain it all here, but I am certain that you have heard it explained in your catechism classes and in church. Questions such as, “in whose Name are you baptized?” and “To what does the water of baptism direct us?” should be readily answered by you. However, the Lord also requires something of us by our baptism, and that is to seek Him, to flee from sin, and to live apart from the world. Can it be seen in this way in our daily life that we are baptized? The water placed on our foreheads disappears at once, but it should show in how we live. We forget this so easily.
We hope you will think of this as often as you see baptism take place, but also from day to day may be reminded, “I am baptized”. May the Lord teach you to know this in a right way!
The first letters of our answer will spell out a few words about that which took place in the family of the jailor of Philippi.

And now to answer the letters which we have again received -
MARGARET MAASSEN - Since we never lived on a farm, Margaret, we don’t know much about chickens and their diseases. These things are also a result of our sin in the garden of Eden. The animals are also suffering as a result of it.
DEBRA LYNN WITVOET -How are the ducklings and the baby chicks, Debra? And also the puppies? It seems you were kept quite busy taking care of the littel ones. Are you keeping all of them? You will soon have a regular farm with all the animals. KEVIN VERBEKE - Yes, Kevin, it was nice to be at the Youth Day in New Jersey, and to meet so many young people. It will not be forgotten very soon. But, just as with other things, it is planned and awaited anxiously, and then becomes a thing of the past.
LISA NEELS - Were there a lot of raspberries this year, Lisa? Can you pick quite a few in a day? The name of our school in Kalamazoo will be the Providence Christian School. Do you thing that is a suitable name for a school?
CONNIE BLOM - For some I think the questions could be made more difficult, Connie, but that would make them too hard for others to do. But I am sure that all of us learn something by doing them. Are you taking good care of your nephews and nieces?
HENDRIKA DE VOS - We give a book out once a year, Hendrika, so you will have to keep doing the quiz and watch carefully that you don’t miss it. Did you have a nice trip to Canada with your grandmother? What part of Canada did you visit?
ANITA SCHOUTEN - What animals do you find in New Zealand, Anita? I know you have cows and horses and such animals, but do you also have many wild animals? We are all quite well. It is indeed a blessing when the Lord gives us our health and strength to do our daily work. ELLEN VROEGINDEWEY -We were pleased that the boys and girls did so well with the Bible quiz at the Youth Day, Ellen. It shows that they were paying attention when they were taught, or have been studying the Bible at home. We can never know too much about the Bible. AMY KAAT - Yes, school will soon be starting again, Amy. each day goes by so quickly, but also weeks, months and years, especially when we look back at them. Did you go on a trip this summer? There are quite a few people travelling during the summer months.
COBY VAN SAANE - Is the school going to be ready in time, Coby? I am sure much work is being done in trying to get it ready. In the Bible we read about two builders - one was wise and the other foolish. How necessary it is that we all become wise builders.
MAY DEN DEKKER - It will probably be after the first of the year before another book is given out, May. Did you think the questions were difficult this time? We hope you are having a nice summer vacation. Are you getting anxious for school to start?
LEONARD DEN BOER - We were glad to have you join in answering the quiz, Leonard. There are many boys and girls today who have never read the Bible. Then we must be thankful that our parents have taught us to know about the Bible and about God.
MARIE REMUS - Now summer will soon be over, Marie, and it will be back to school again. What grade will you be in? No doubt it will be somewhat more difficult than last year, but that makes a person work harder at it.
LANE GROEN - Did you get a good report card, Lane? What subjects do you like best in school? Schools are a privilege we don’t often consider, until we hear about those who do not have them. It is in this way we may learn to read our Bibles.
JOHN BOSCH - The people you enquired about live in the Chilli-wack area, John. I can send you the address if you wish. It is strange how people who have grown up together become so scattered to far-off places. But the poet said, “The path I take is known to Thee.”
BEVERLY HEERSCHAP - We want to welcome you to the Bible quiz, Beverly, as we are always glad to see new names appearing on the list. We are never too young to learn about God’s Word, but neither are we ever too old. We hope to hear from you again. RICKY AND CHAD KOEDAM -It was nice to hear from you and to know that you are also reading in the Banner of Truth. How are all those kittens? Have you counted them lately? Perhaps they don’t sit still long enough to count them.
ALISA STAM - Raising red worms seems like quite a task, Alisa. Can you keep them from crawling away? You will have to tell me more about it. We have had some hot weather, but most of the time it has been quite mild. Did you find the quiz quite easy this time?
NANCY DE JONG - There is an old saying, Nancy, which says, “East, west, but home is best”, and I guess you found that out. Even though there is work to be done which we don’t like too well, there is no place like home. It is something we should always remember, because we do forget sometimes.
LYNN VROEGINDEWEY - Yes, Lynn, we need the Lord’s help also in searching the Scriptures. Everything is empty without His blessing. The instructions given us at the Youth Day can be useful to us our whole lifetime, so that, even though the day is past, the instructions remain.
To all our young friends - our thanks again for your replies. We hope to hear from all again next month, and perhaps a few more. May the Lord remember us together.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
OUR CONFESSION
Every year it is the custom that a number of young people make public confession in the midst of the congregation. This is not a confirmation of new members, but a confession by those who are already members of the church. The membership of children lies in that of their parents and in their baptism. Those who have become adults cannot remain baptized members. They cannot, in this respect, continue to be considered in their parents. When a person is come to years of discretion, he or she is placed before a choice. The membership by virtue of birth and baptism can either be broken off, or continued by confession. However, when we do the first, we do this against God’s ordinances. (See Article 28 - Netherlands Confession of Faith).
The time in which we live is a time of great decline. Many turn their backs to the church, and openly choose the world. By this they show an unwillingness to live anymore under the Word of God and the holy sacrements. In this way they also withdraw themselves from the official service and church discipline. A life without discipline is a life in open sin. Then we can see more clearly the spirit of the deep which is constantly winning more and more ground. The kingdom of the anti christ becomes great. Not only public sins increase, but all types of sects and divisions also multiply. Jesus has warned against this in Matthew 24:23, “Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there: believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders: insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall decieve the very elect. Behold I have told you before.”
In the 19th century J. C. Ryle already wrote: “I believe that 400 years ago our fathers understood the essential needs of human nature better than men do at the present time. Naturally, I am well aware that the old paths for which I plead are not loved by many in these days.” These old paths are directly opposite and contradictory to much of the so-called knowledge or our days. Out-moded systems, worn-out theology, cast-off theories, worn-out dogmas, old-fashioned religion, and such like abusive terms are continually spewed out in many publications and from many pulpits. If Ryle had lived in this 20th century, he would label these enlightened views and intellectual explanations as departures from the old paths. Many young people seek someting different, something new. Many are brought to doubting by those who teach the doctrine of man. In man there is yet something that is well-pleasing to God. Under such so-called orthodoxy many are misled, and men receive a religion without God.
Imagine for a moment that I give someone a counterfeit banknote, making him very happy. But when he arrives at the bank to cash it, he receives the message that it has no value. This is also the case when men try to point you to Jesus without a prior knowledge of misery and an experience of our state of death in Adam. Men can call this love and preaching of the gospel, but it is nothing else than base deceit. Many young people are thus led astray, and view profession as experience.
The seducing spirits are legion. Openly or secretly Satan places his snares, and in doing so he has the restless and bustling times as support. The searching of God’s Word is neglected by many, and the writings of the “men of the latter reformation” are no longer read. In addition there are many who no longer hear of the ways in which the Lord deals with His people, and this is due (1) because the number of those who fear the Lord in truth is continually decreasing,(2) because there is so little spoken anymore about the wonder of God’s grace, and (3) because there are so few exercises in grace. These things point us to the deep decline of God’s church and the great apostasy which is being consummated.
The profound seriousness of all these matters should fill our hearts with sadness. It involves the preservation of our young people, that they should not be dragged along with the stream of the times. Joshua said to Israel, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15).
By nature all of us choose the world, the gods of this time. All that is in Adam is dead. We are nevertheless responsible for our deeds and go lost due to our own fault. The Lord grant that these things may be considered, and teach us to pray for the guidance of His Spirit. May He also keep us with His Word. Therefore try the spirits whether they are of God!

YOUTH CONFERENCE IN NEW JERSEY
The Youth Conference of 1978 was held on July 1st at the Eben-ezer Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Franklin Lakes, New Jersy. Rev. Weststrate opened the conference with the singing of Psalter 243:7, 8 and after reading from 2 Peter 2:1-13, he offered a word of prayer. Rev. Weststrate first announced that Rev. Den-Boer, who was unable to conduct the conference because of illness, had called from Canada wishing the best to all those who attended. He then spoke a few words from the portion of scripture which was read. In his address he urged all to keep the Bible as the only guideline and flee from evil temptations, clinging to the precious doctrines of salvation which we are still privliged to have. He closed the address by citing Ecclesiates 12:1 “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.”
The morning topic was presented by James Greendyk entitled “Alcohol.” He tried to point out the effects that alcohol has on the body when drinking execessively and how it also destroys the soul. After the address there was a question an answer period, during which time the speaker answered questions that were received from the audience.
The Choral Society of the Franklin Lakes congregation then sang three songs, after which Mr. G. Moerdyk conducted a Bible quiz for all children in the elementary grades. The response to his questions was very good.
A very well organized and commendable lunch was served by the Lois Circle.
After lunch everyone returned to the main auditorium where a topic was presented by Bartel Elshout entitled “The Deception of Modern Christianity.” He spoke about the widespread organization, “Campus Crusade.” He explained their four spiritual laws and showed how they contradicted the Bible. He encouraged the young people to study the Word of God so that they would learn the truth for themselve. After a period of questions and answers, the Choral Society sang four more selections.
Mr. G. Moerdyk closed the meeting with a short address in which he expressed his hope that the conference would be beneficial to our never-dying souls; that we might not only be a hearer of the word, but also a doer of the word.
