DEDICATION OF SIOUX FALLS CHURCH
It was a memorable occasion for the church at Sioux Falls on Friday, June 4, when they held church services in their own church building for the first time, after over 2 years of meeting in different places. This was made possible by the providence of God in opening a way to purchase a place for this congregation.
Rev. W. Suyker, pastor of the Rock Valley congregation, led the dedication services. The service was opened with singing Psalter No. 334, at which time the Bible was opened. Rev. Suyker read Articles 27 and 28 of the confession of faith, and Psalm 132, after which he led in prayer. While singing Psalter No. 368, an offering was received for the church building fund.
The text for this occasion was from Psalm 132, verses 13, 14, 15: “For the Lord has chosen Zion; He hath desired it for his habitation. This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it. I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.”
The title of the sermon was, “The Glory of Zion Highly esteemed.” The three main points were:
1. In God’s sovereign election of Zion
2. In God’s familiar residence in Zion
3. In God’s graceful blessing for Zion
In the sermon, Rev. Suyker stated his desire was that the Lord might bless the beginning of this branch of our churches, as He is glorified only in the works of Himself, and if the Lord has chosen this place, it will prosper at His time. It was also desired that the Lord may give prayer for office bearers, and that this may be a self-governing church. The Lord has made it possible to buy this building, but we should ask and seek to belong to the church which can be purchased without money and without price.
Elder John Spaans, president of the committee for the Sioux Falls church, also spoke a few words, expressing his desire that the Lord may prosper the church at Sioux Falls. Even though there were times when it was not known what to do, the Lord has made all things well up to this time. May the Lord add unto His church those that must be saved. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ the Lord.”
The closing Psalter was No. 238.
But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister; And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mark 10:42–45
