DEDICATION SERVICE
of the
New Addition
First Netherlands Reformed Congregation
Grand Rapids, Michigan
The congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, assembled together on March 7, at their regular week-day service, for the dedication of their new chapel and catechism rooms which were recently added to the church.
The new chapel has a seating capacity of 240. A new consistory room was also included in the new addition.
For several years, many who attended the services had to be seated in the basement as there was no room in the main auditorium. There also was a great need for additional rooms for the catechism classes.
At the beginning of the service, the Lord was acknowledged for the blessings bestowed upon the congregation.
On behalf of the consistory, Rev. Lamain thanked the general contractor, Mr. N. DeMeester; Mr. C. VanZweden, architect; Mr. John Bazen, electrical contractor; Mr. J. DeBruin and Mr. B. VanHamburg, painters; as well as the custodian and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. C. Verblauw and many others who, together with their combined efforts, completed this new addition to the satisfaction of the consistory and congregation.
A word of thanks was spoken to those who donated an organ for the new chapel in memory of Mr. L. DeMaagd and Mr. P. Bazen who served as deacons in the church for several years. Also, acknowledgment was given for the lovely Bible which was donated in memory of Mr. D. VanRee who was an elder in the church for many years.
Rev. Lamain took for his text for this occasion, Isaiah 56:5: “Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. “
The congregation was directed to:
1. A Divine Promise,
2. A Divine Privilege,
3. A Divine Assurance.
The importance and necessity to learn these things personally for our own heart was stressed by the minister. We have to acknowledge the Lord that we can say with Isaac of old in Genesis 26, “the Lord has made room for us”. But, let us not cleave to material things alone, but above all, to that which is necessary for eternity.
On behalf of the sister congregation in Kalamazoo, and Classis Mid-West, Rev. Elshout spoke a few edifying words at the end of the service. Several members of the consistory and congregation of the Kalamazoo church were also present.
The service was concluded with prayer and the singing of Psalter 368:1.
