ANNIVERSAR Y OF THE ORDINA TION OF REV. W.C. LAMAIN

With agreement we have read in Canada and America what the editor, brother De Gier has written in the Saambinder with regard to the anniversary of brother Lamain. As deputy of the synod here, and speaking for many friends, is it my wish to write a few words.

For a moment are we thinking about Ps. 103. We know that especially this psalm has come to mean so much for our beloved brother Lamain. The poet is singing about the blessings of God out of free grace. And when he has counted these blessings he says “Forget not all the benefits He has bestowed on thee”. We read in John 21 of the wonderful catch of fish. The disciples at the word of Jesus cast the net on the right side of the ship and could not draw it for the multitude of fishes. They drew the net to land and laid this draught at the feet of the Lord, wishing to come with the gifts of the Giver. Yes, even if John wrote his gospel fifty years later, he has not forgotten that in the net there were a hundred fifty-three fishes. The disciples counted them, every one.

That likewise, our beloved brother in Grand Rapids may come with God’s bountiful blessings to the bountiful Giver. For forty years our brother was a fisher of men. Converted, called, and anointed by God. Sent out in Holland and America, he also cast out the net in Canada. And we know fishes have been caught. Their number is known to the Lord. We know for certain that many were comforted by the Word who now are already singing before God’s throne. In our heart there is a longing for those people that are still on earth and for those happy people who without self-love and without sin praise God eternally.

Certainly the devil in those forty years also did not sit still. When more than forty years ago Rev. Lamain came from the pulpit the first time, the devil told him it was all over. But God, in spite of scorn and slander, upheld him to proclaim His Gospel of free grace. This he has experienced, “He that sows with tears, shall reap in joy”.

He has preached very much. To give only an example, in Kalamazoo (Rev. Elshout is minister there now) he has preached since 1947 until now eleven hundred sermons on weekdays. Rev. Lamain for long years has also been a well known and respected man at church meetings, and as president of the synod and curatorium has served the congregations in Holland and America. He is also editor of the Banner of Truth, our church paper in America.

May the Lord remember his wife who always lovingly bears with him in the busy life he leads. Our brother is not much at home, he preaches often. Yes, it is what he likes doing best of all, proclaiming the praises of Him who has called him out of darkness to His marvelous light. The Lord remember his children and granchildren.

With this we conclude, he who honours people too highly dishonours God. May we be grateful to God, for what the Lord in free grace bestowed on our beloved brother, and we hope heartily that we may yet read and hear much of him. May we with him draw of His treasure, becoming rich in Christ and just then poor in ourselves. Then we have the richest jubilee.
