Men think and act according to their thoughts, that only a profession of religion is necessary. We read of some in the New Testament (sad characters) who had no fear of God before their eyes, and yet they made a profession of religion. You know how the Saviour said He would deal with them; He would say to them, “I never knew you.” A profession of religion is a proper thing if there is something to profess; but if a man has never experienced the life of God in his soul, never been brought to repent of his sins, never been taught to rejoice in God his Savior through an application of redeeming love and blood, what has that sinner to profess? For a merely mental reception of the doctrines is not a spiritual apprehension of them by living faith.
