INSTALLATION AND INAUGURATION OF REV. C. W. HEGEMAN
Saturday, October 29 was a day of great gladness for the Congregation at Unionville, Ontario. Rev. Hegeman was then installed in its midst as pastor.
The installation took place in the morning service by the moderator Rev. L. Kieboom of Norwich, who pointed out the great responsibilities of God’s servants and called the attention of those present to Isaiah 3 vers. 10 and 11 “Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him, etc.”
His topic was: The twofold message of the servants of God, which is
1. Comforting to the righteous
2. Terrifying to the wicked.
The godly command to His servants to faithfully preach the gospel at all times, both to the righteous and the wicked was emphasized in these points. Psalm 1 verses 2 and 3 was then sung, the form for installation was read and the questions asked, which were answered by Rev. Hegeman with: “Yes truly, with all my heart.”
Rev. Kieboom addressed Rev. Hegeman, his wife and children and expressed his sincere desire, that the Lord’s blessing might be experienced by them during his labors in Unionville. The congregation then sang Psalm 134 verse 3 and prayer was offered. The service was concluded with singing Psalm 85-3 and the benediction.
Between the services a light lunch was served by the ladies of the congregation to everyone present.
The afternoon service began with singing Psalm 68–10 and reading Acts 10 verses 1–29, after which the new pastor asked the Lord for His blessing.
Then Psalm 77 verses 7, 8 and 11 were sung and Rev. Hegeman expressed the hope, that David’s words “0 God, most holy are Thy ways” might be in the hearts of the hearers.
He then explained his text, Acts 10 vers. 29 “Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for; I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me.”
His topic was : The examination of Peter.
1. He was lawfully called
2. He came unconditionally
3. He examined the congregation.
The sermon was concluded with the singing of Psalm 119 verses 65 and 67, after which Rev. Hegeman expressed his thanks to Rev. Kieboom for the installation and his labors as moderator of the congregation. Also Rev. Lamain, who could not attend due to a funeral, was thanked for all his labors since the congregation was organized.
After the delegates of the Classis and the neighboring congregations were addressed, Rev. Hegeman expressed the hope, that he might labor with the consistory in love to the welfare of the congregation. The congregation was invited to come to him with their problems and difficulties at any time.
Rev. Kieboon welcomed the new minister on behalf of the Classis. Rev. Bieze as a personal friend, and Elder Guldemeester of the Bradford Congregation also expressed their good wishes.
Elder Van Vliet representing the congregation and consistory of Unionville, spoke a few words and requested to sing Psalm 121 verses 1 and 2, after which Rev. Hegeman closed with the benediction.
