O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Timothy 6:20

Dear Boys and Girls:

This month of September brings school days back again. In school we prepare for the time when, if we may be spared, we must go out and earn a living. Some may plan to be lawyers, doctors, nurses, accountants, farmers, truck drivers, mechanics — there are so many, many occupations. May the prayer of some also be that they may be used to the building of God’s church in our country or in foreign lands.

But that we may also consider that our entire life is a preparation for an eternity, a time that never ends. How sad it is that this is often given no thought at all, for it is such an important matter. May we pray daily — Thy Spirit must the work perform Prepare me, gracious God, To stand before Thy face. For it is all of grace.

As mentioned above, there are many occupations in these days, but we find quite a number also mentioned in the Bible. This month I would like to have you find the occupations of the following persons mentioned in the Bible. (For example — Zenas was a lawyer, as found in Titus 3:13). I hope you will be able to find them all.

Demetrius

Simon Peter (before Jesus called him)

Joseph (the husband of Mary) Cornelius

Simon (in whose home Peter lodged)

Aquila and Priscilla

Nehemiah

Cain

Joseph’s brethren

Zacchaeus

Lydia

Alexander (found in Timothy)

Zenas

Luke (see Colossians)

Deborah (in Genesis)

Joseph (while in Potiphar’s house)

And now our letters —

JOHN VAN WOUDENBERG — I was happy to hear from you, John. It seems that every month we hear from a new friend. Your answers were all correct. Do write again, and also say Hello to your brother Joe for me.

DONNA JEAN POST — I’m sorry if I failed to list your name in the last issue, Donna. With all the answers, I’m sure it could happen, although I try real hard to be sure I don’t miss any. But I don’t think you have missed answering any of the quizzes, at least not for quite some time.

ALICE SCHONEVELD — You will have to come to Michigan some time, Alice, and share our snow with us. What is the name of your horse? Do you find it a lot of work taking care of her? I think my daughters would like one, too, but first we would have to move to the farm.

BETTY VAN DER WAAL — I’m glad you found the quiz quite easy, Betty, The mailing of the Banner of Truth was rather late last month, so I think this explains why we haven’t quite so many letters. And then, too, I think quite a few are vacationing this month.

PHILLIP KAAT — How is the tree-house coming along, Phillip? You had better make sure that it is fastened securely, or the whole thing will come tumbling down. I can imagine that you are getting quite expert at driving tractors.

Again, that’s all for this month. With love,

Your friend,

TIMOTHY MISSION FUND

Gifts to our mission fund amounted to $15.00 during the month of July, giving us a balance at the end of the month of $40.75. We hope that our many readers will remember our Mission Fund, as they are enabled to do so. The gifts, large or small, are much appreciated by those who labor in distant lands, as shown by the acknowledgements below —

From Rev. Kuijt: Abenero, July 20, 1965

Dear readers of Timothy,

First of all my wife and I want to thank you all for the many gifts we have already received via the Timothy Mision Fund. The fact that so many remember us in their prayers and with their gifts prove that they have a love for the Lord’s work on the mission field.

I have already written several letters, but apparently some got lost. Now I am going to write via Ds. Van Zweden, and I hope that this letter will arrive safely at the right destination.

It seems to be that the Lord is going to move among the people of the Aberero valley. No, there is no mass movement or anything like that, but there are a few people who come regularly to our Sunday services. Now immediately forget the idea of our Dutch or American church services, which we have in our countries. We come together in our sitting room (as you will remember, before the strip was opened, we had our services in the kitchen, sleeping, sitting, and eating rooms with the helpers from Bokondini and Kelila) and the Jalis sit down on the floor of our new house. Our coastal boy, Jozua, and Ndomeli, a boy from Wolo, also attend the “meetings”, and of course, my wife also. The attendants vary from about one to ten persons. However, we are not amazed about this, because our West Irian field is a real pioneer field, which means that nobody had been working here before our arrival. The Lord elected us to be the first ones to proclaim the Good News to these Gentiles. Never think that Gentiles like these people will receive missionaries with open arms. On the contrary, the people do not like us. And we can understand this very well, because we are intruders. This is the first reaction. Now having been here for about two years, they know that we do not harm them physically, but of course (and we do not know this very well) we could harm them indirectly. So we heard that since our coming the sweet potatoes grow much smaller. This could be a reason for hostility. And we are sure that if they had courage enough, they would kill us. But they are afraid for instance for our clothes. This is something supernatural for them and it prevents them from doing evil towards us. This is of course humanly speaking, while we are sure also that the Lord protects us. We do not know everything which is in their minds; however, several times they have tried to drive us away. So now there has been a change and several come to our services.

On Sunday I asked them why they were coming to our service, to hear the Gospel. One of them said that they were afraid of hell. Some time ago I told them that the ones who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ would be saved and would live with Him, never to die would not believe would perish and burn forever in hell. As they burn the bodies after they die, they understand a little bit of what it means to be burnt forever. You see, the reasons might be quite different, but we are sure that the Lord may use this also.

Our informant, named Kokpan, is coming regularly also. We think that he has chosen to go the Christian way, but it is very difficult for him to break away totally from “the old (Gentile) ways”. One of the first things the heathens do when they become Christians is to cut their hair. Especially the men have long, dirty hair, some even to their shoulders. The reason for having such long hair is the dance. While running and jumping and shouting, they move their heads back and forth, so that their hair, which is like the hair of a poodle or black sheep, swings in the air. But dancing belongs to fighting and killing. So one of the first things they do, is to cut off that long hair. Kokpan has done that also. And herewith he shows that he has broken with the old way of life. But on the other hand he is a child of his tribe, which means that he is still bound to several customs. Our policy is not to forbid things which are not fundamentally against the Christian faith. For instance, we do not press the people to wear clothes. If they would like to have them, of course, they may have them. The Christians from Bokondini and Kelila are fond of them and are willing to work for them, but in our own area not a single one wears clothes yet. For us it is more important that they cut their hair than to wear clothes, because that creates big problems, especially when women would do so.

If we remember that it lasted about 50 years before the first Christian on the coast was baptized, we have plenty of time yet.] In October of this year it will be two years since we opened up this area.

We hope that you will continue to remember us in your prayers.

Till next time,

Yours in Christ,
