VALUABLE ADVICE TO A YOUNG SEEKER

Dear friend:—It is a very great mercy to be taught of the Lord. The more He teaches the soul to know its own ruin, the more is the want of Christ felt. I think that word is suitable to you: “Give diligence to make your calling and election sure.” As the Spirit gives you power to follow so gracious an injunction, you will find yourself reaching after Christ, after such manifestations of Himself as your Lord, Savior and all, that nothing short will satisfy you. It is in the sweet savour of Christ that poor, poluted sinners are accepted (Ezek. 20:41). In all your ways, hearings, readings, and meditation, may this be the end and aim of your soul—to receive and know the Son of God. We are ruined without Him. Therefore, as Hart says:

“The chief concern of fallen mankind
Should be to gain God’s favour;
What safety can a sinner find,
Before he find a Saviour?”

The revelation of Christ can alone satisfy the desires of a new-born soul. The sincere milk of the Word, tokens for good, answers to prayer, light shining in a dark place, a soft and broken heart, a spirit of prayer, are all part of and flow from Jesus, and as they are given and received, they strengthen, help and confirm the soul, and also quicken its desires for more and fuller manifestations of His Person.

Be this, then, your aim—to know Him, to be found in Him. If it is made your aim, and according to the singleness and strength of that aim, so will be your conflicts. For Satan always has a contrary aim—the overthrow of Christ’s kingdom and glory. May you have mercy to build you up, even for ever.

Yours sincerely,

Nov. 13, 1891.
