A LETTER FROM THE REV. G. KUIJT

Aberero, Feb. 6, 1964

To the many friends of our mission:

Through this letter I want to thank you heartily for the many gifts you have given me personally. A part of the money 1 already spent. Many things are needed.

Again I have an opportunity to write and send you a letter. The nearest mission station is at a distance of a three days walk. I like walking myself. More than three months ago my wife and I and some of the carriers went to this place. By the goodness of God she walked good. I never thought that she would reach the destination, but the Lord has given strength to do so.

In the future I hope to write you more fully. We have very much to do, so I have not much time to write now. Only this. When we came here for the first time, all the people ran away for they were very much afraid of us. They were very much afraid of the white faces and they thought we were going to do bad things as stealing wives and killing pigs. Later they came back and found that we were a different kind of people. They called us “good people.”

Then the work of the air-strip started. (Must be finished now. — Ed.) There are not many people to help, and we have to remove hundreds of stones and rocks… .

This time we are living in a grass-house. Before we lived in a native-hut. We are happy that we are still healthy and that we can help the people already physically. A lot of the people are suffering from disease. A single injection is sufficient for cure. We hope, humanly speaking, that even through this simple service, we may gain the confidence of the people to bring them afterward the bread of life and to show them the great Physician Jesus Christ, Who came into this world to seek and save sinners. As we are, these people are dead in sin and trespasses. They kill other people, they steal wives and pigs, etc., and live in the darkness of heathenism. May the Lord give His dear Spirit so that they be born again and to know Him, Who has said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Then their lives will change and instead of doing the will of the evil one, they want to live for Him Who bought them with His precious blood, namely His people.

Pray for us that we may have entrance to this people and bring them the message from heaven.

The last letter received from the missionary, when this was written, was dated March 7, 1964.

At that time he and his wife had left the mission-field for a few days to go to Sentani. They had also to visit the immigration-office and received permission to remain another two years. After that time the permit must be renewed. They were both in good health after all the hard labor and many difficulties. He writes, “Give the Most High all thanks and praise.” They also bought a chain- or motor-saw to cut down many trees.
