BILLY GRAHAM’S OPINION

4 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

On Sunday, October 14, 1962, Evangelist Billy Graham, in his Hour of Decision broadcast from Uruguay, concluded his message by a favorable reference to the Second Vatican Council called by Pope John XXIII. He pointed out that there was a great emphasis being made at the conference upon the Holy Spirit. This he indicated, was a good thing.

The impression left by Dr. Graham on his vast audience was that here was an interest and emphasis in the ecumenical council to which Prot estants could give approval.

Surely Dr. Graham knows better. He knows more about the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church than this and he certainly should know more about Protestant history than this.

The Roman Catholic emphasis upon the Holy Spirit is of an entirely different nature and purpose than that of the Protestant as he appeals to the Holy Spirit speaking through the Scriptures. . Here the Holy Spirit is to give to the present Pope an’d the present ecumenical council the infallible dogma which will be established at this council, etc.

Billy Graham shows where his free-will heart and free-will preaching is leading to! A crying sound throughout the world in our days: Ecumenicality! Universal unity — peace!

A FALSE PEACE

A friend in Chicago writes this pungent paragraph which stands by itself wtihout comment; “Please note the drive for something called unity among the Christian Churches. Note that they are obtaining the “unity” not by going toward The Truth which is One, not moving towards Christ where you would expect to find unity among Christians, but further away from Christ until there is so little left they can agree on this little, and that they call ‘unity’.”

AND A WALDENSIAN

Rome — Italian Protestants joined here in an interdenominational session of prayer for Christian unity that marked the first time Evangelical Protestants had publicly urged such unity with the Roman Catholic Church. The session was held under the co-chairmanship of the moderator of the Waldensian Church, Europe’s oldest Protestant body, and the superintendent of the Italian Methodist Church.

The late Dr. Kennedy, Dingwal, preached in 1881 in Fearn, Ross-shire, from Isaiah 26:20: “Come, My people, enter thou into thy chamber,” etc. In applying the teaching of the text to his own time, he said that judgment was fallen on the Church in Scotland. It was a judgment within the Church, and would manifest itself in five ways.

1. The Lord would remove most of His living witnesses, and great blanks be left unfilled in the Church.

2. False teachings would take the place of preaching the gospel.

3. Spiritual discernment would leave the people, and under their darkened understanding they would swallow the new teaching as a blind man would a dish of water, whether clean or unclean.

4. A spirit of worldliness would fill the minds of the people, and they would forsake the means of grace. Where hundreds once attended, they would soon be counted only by tens.

5. The Lord would deny to Scotland the work of the Holy Spirit. Though He promised to leave a seed to serve Him, He did not promise that Scotland would continue to enjoy His favor as in the days of old. The worldliness entering in would grieve Him, and cause His Holy Spirit to be withheld, and then His true servants and people would be few.

Do we notice these signs in the American Church or churches? “Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears,” Jer. 9:1. “Come, My people, enter thou into thy chambers and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast, etc.” Isaiah 26:20.
